    Hi, I am a Singaporean living in HK. Do not worry about your daughter not knowing Cantonese . You can speak to her in Cantonese at home and watch Cantonese movies & drama. Yes, songs too. Not to worry much about English & Mandarin as she has the environment to learn these 2 languages at home. I learned my Cantonese at home as my mother, aunties & uncles all speak cantonese . So I grew up speaking Cantonese at home ... and watching TVB dramas LOL. My nieces grew up in an English speaking household (and they are almost practically brought up by the maids) but they could speak Cantonese , albeit not as good as a native Cantonese speaker as they only get to pick up Cantonese when they are with my mother (their grandma) . Their parents never speak any Cantonese at home or watch Cantonese drama / movies much. Hence they do not have much opportunity to be immerse in Cantonese. Yes, speak more Cantonese at home is the way to go if you want your daughter to pick up Cantonese.

    I agree with you. I am a Singapore citizen and speaking Cantonese at home. I used to speak Cantonese with my daughter when she was a child. As she is speaking Cantonese all the times, it doesn't affect her learning of other languages in school. So our whole family are speaking Cantonese.

    In Singapore, we have many Chinese dialects groups mainly Hokkien, Cantonese, Teochew, Hakka, Hainanese. The best option is to have all the Chinese dialects groups to study Mandarin. This was former respected PM LKY idea. Also, it's good for doing business with China, huge market.
    I hope new Hong Kongers should know why Singapore is doing away with dialects. Most dialects speakers ended speaking mixed dialects like "rojak ". We do not wish the inflow of Hong Kong Cantonese speakers to promote Cantonese and challenge the Mandarin language here. Cantonese is a dialect not an official language.

    我认识一个香港人家庭,一家四口。女儿来新加坡的时候已经七岁读一年级。她上课了两个星期,几乎每天都以泪洗脸,哭诉学校老师的英语讲得很快,她听不懂老师讲的英语,心里很害怕。父母为了让孩子们能很快地适应学校的生活,便决定用英语跟孩子们说话。夫妇俩感觉不错,天天讲英语后,女儿的心理压力减退了。读幼稚园的儿子英语也跟得很快。他们也觉得彼此的英语也越讲越流畅了!四个月后,妈妈看见两姐弟为了几个文具争吵不休,他们口齿伶俐,声音越吵越大,从头到尾全讲英语,没有一句广东话。妈妈为孩子们的英语流利到位而沾沾自喜!半年过后的某一天,妈妈用英语教女儿如何清理饭桌的碗盘时,女儿突然截住妈妈的话说:Okay, enough! Don’t speak English please! 被女儿这么一叫,妈妈一时没反应过来。然后,她女儿改用广东话说:妈咪,唔该你呀!唔好再同我地讲英文啦!你英文讲得好慢,音又唔准呀!我真系顶唔顺喇!后来这位朋友与她老公领悟到用自己最好的语言跟孩子说话才是最重要的。😅

    Even though my family is from HK, we couldn’t teach my kids much Cantonese as they have development delays (therapist says to focus on English first 🇸🇬) We share the same worries as grannies’ first language is Cantonese. 😢

    • @ngcollin88
      @ngcollin88 Рік тому

      Truth being, apart from 🇸🇬 being multi-racial with 3 main corresponding languages, 🇸🇬 Chinese are majority descendants of southeastern china immigrants. Just 3 provinces: fujian, guangdong and hainan, but there are alrdy 5 major dialect-languages (Hokkien, Teochew, Cantonese, Hakka, Hainanese. There’re a few more groups; too minor to mention).
      Hence in the interest of national unity English needs to be the main administration and education language. And for local Chinese unity, standard Chinese with standard Mandarin.
      Unity aside, 🇸🇬 government seems to be of the opinion - derived from LKY personal experiences and philosophical foresights; that every child has differing levels of ability and mental development. Hence from late 1970s, all national schools (primary to tertiary/technical/specialist) and pre-schools had to be English medium for majority of academic learning and all administration, along with adopting 2nd language (mother tongue - Chinese/Malay/Tamil/etc approved by MOE) teaching for all. Moving on to early 80s, with the speak mandarin campaign, the policies thereafter (essentially killing off lingual-dialects from government, schools, mass media) were quite drastic no thanks to LKY 😢 they are now still tight albeit with some breather/allowance to cater to older/elderly folks.
      Even until now when there are calls to ease the policy’s regulations, 🇸🇬 gahmen would still insist that a higher prevalence of Hokkien, Cantonese and other lingual-dialects would impede our mastery of English and mother tongue languages to compete globally and regionally.

    • @ngcollin88
      @ngcollin88 Рік тому

In my case, my school offered a 3rd language (which can be Malay, German, Jap, French etc) for those who could cope well in both languages as 1st Langs (in my case, Chinese/English). As an adult now, I can speak 2 dialects, Eng, Chinese and a 3rd language which was optional then.

      I say this due to my own experience. As a kid in the 80's, I speak Cantonese (without courses or tuition, of course) at home and to my friends and learn it the natural way. One thing I dare not say in the comment for fear of lambasting by other Singaporeans is try to encourage your child not to speak Singlish. It will affect your daughter ability to learn proper English . To be honest, it sounds awful, but most Singaporean finds it funny. During old day, people are less educated and Singaporean of different ethic grps speak to each other with a mixture of their own language and dialect, thus the evolution in a natural way. It is way of survival through communication. Nowadays, ppl uses Singlish as a way to impress others as if it is a trend.
