Great video, i’m a beginner and really lacking confidence but this was clear as day and straightforward, thank you!
I've wanted to do this for a while but always worried it would be too complicated. This video is so helpful. I'm definitely getting one now.
Fitted another one yesterday , they are so simple once you know how.
Any problems drop us a message 👍
Thank you for the video mate. Definitely helped. As a Newby to electrics i was about to pay some one to fit it for me after watching to many over complicated videos. Now I have watched yours I feel I can fit it myself. You make it so simple. Cheers pal
Great explanation!! You take nothing for granted and show every step for a beginner. Thank you so much. How about another video on how to connect that leisure power to an inverter or 12V plugs. How do you connect those?
you make it easy for me to understand. so many videos confuse the hell out of me but now im ready to begin. (got all the gear n no idea) :)
Literally- perfect video for dummies- giving me full confidence now to install my own :D
Common sense & this vid 😊Excellent, straight in there and to the point !!
Great video just fitted mine and im at a loss with electrics but this was so straight forward thanks
Ah ha you explain how to make a ground! Thanks!
Hey Tommy, thanks for teaching the world...by far the most simplest and easy to follow how to on split charging set up.....bro how do you ground the negative inside for regular family vans with no metal exposed near the house battery? ✌✌✌
Your video helped me wire up mine today thank you so much very easy to follow as well 😀
Thanks a lot for sharing your very informative videos. Cheers from Melbourne Australia 🇦🇺🍻
That was a great deal of information to enthusiasts
Really good vid mate thanks. Im unsure how the scrimping works. Literally just squeeze them around and it stops the wure coming out??
Great video Pal. Very helpful. Thanks.
Great video! I'm a little confused with the fuse? The fuse just looks like a piece of metal dude without the fuse bit in the middle? Thanks
Nice one Tommy easy lesson and straight to the point looking forward to my van conversion
Brilliant video nice and self explanatory
Great simple detailed video. Thanks, bro
Hi, just watched this made it look easy, ha. What amp fuse goes in the holders please?? Not finding any on ebay that come with the fuses in.
Thanks.
Hi great video thanks just doing mine and just making sure it is ok to have the earth from spilt charge and the earth from liesure battery going to the same bolt to body/ chassis thanks
A great video! very useful and simple. got me a little bit less worried about doing a van conversion now. Do you have a video on doing the lights etc.?
Did u earth ur starter battery as well I did the same as u i ran a cable to the relay ,relay to the battery and was earthed and it wasn’t charging my leisure.
But then I swapped it out for a twin live and neg twin cable starter to the leisure and it worked with 5amps being drawn
So why I’m asking did u earth it at the starter battery as well as the leisure
If not if gone wrong somewhere
Great help. I can do mine now! Thanks very much 👍
So this is used to charge a battery with the car motor. And sepatates the batteries other wise? Like it goes only one way?
So you have a battery to start the car and then a battery for van aplaiances?
I copied this and omg this worked flawlessly thanks your the man amazing video and successful results. Question I want to know Can I add another leisure battery to that split or would I need another split?
Brilliant vid very helpful
It's supposed to be installed as per the instructions next to the starter batt not the secondary or it won't detect the voltage drop for a long time. I have the same setup and I realise why they tell you to do this. In order for me to get it to detect the car is off even after 5min I have to turn headlights on and wait to hear the click
Thank very happy with that 👍👍
Really great video thanks 👍
Great video but missing important info: What size cable should be used and what size fuses?
Not everyone buys a kit... I bought the voltage sensitive relay and will put kit together myself.. could you share more info for us non kit peeps xx
@@LT_TOMMY_ Hi, great video. Are you using 10mm Outside Diameter which is 25mm^2 giving 170 Amp current rating. Or is it 10mm^2 cable giving a 70 Amp rating and a 6mm Outside Diameter. Cheers
What would you suggest in a situation where I have a STANDARD NOT smart alternator and I want to change the battery from AGM to LiFoPO4. Everyone informs that VSR is dedicated to standard alternators and DC/DC chargers to EURO 5 OR 6. It is not often said what kind of batteries can or should not be used with VSR or DC/DC. Everything seems to be that if I buy a LiFoPO4 battery and connect it to the VSR, then this battery will blow up my alternator. So what to do in this situation and is there any reasonable solution ???
Great video mate.
Have you done any from leisure battery to fuse board then to switches etc?
Where did you get the tool from for putting the terminals on your cables please
Great video, will be investing in one of these kits on eBay for my Land Rover, quick question how hard would it be to install a solar panel and controller into this kit at a later stage ?
Hi, great vid! Helped me just fit mine in my mini camper 👍 I was wondering that because my leisure battery is fully charged, should I disconnect this when driving and reconnect when I need charging as the light still comes on when driving? Will this overcharge my new battery or should this be ok?
Cheers mate
I have 3x110ah leisure batteries currently running on solar through solar charge controller. Is there anything I would need to do differently?
Hi, great video. thanks. I'm thinking about fitting one but i have 2 12v car batteries linked in series as one of the batteries was for a tail lift which is gone. i have a live cable that was going to the lift so thought to use that to go into relay, its already fused. does it matter that i have 2 batteries as its 24v?
Very interesting video
Did you connect up the leisure battery first, then starter battery, or does the order not matter?
Run everything first, fuses etc then I usually connect starter battery then leisure battery 👍
Struggling to find a place to wire from the back of my van to the where the battery is. Any tips?
Cracking video 👍
Brilliant video mate very helpful followed it step by step keep up the good work. Can you add a solar panel to this system 👍👍
On the first page you show all the kit assembly parts and the split box is close to the vehicle battery . I have put mine in the engine compartment, does it matter as long as the wires go to the correct connector.
A long as it's all wired up correct it'll be fine , sorry for late response, only just seen this 👍👍👍
Well that was "step by step"..I'm a novice..So from Car Battery to fuse...from fuse to split relay..from slit relay to leisure battery.....or was there a second fuse. What if you have a smart alternator?
So basically I need to do this im putting a battery in the back of my van its basically for cb radio so will my main battery charge the one in the back if I get same kit as u
Hi Tommy, do I only need to disconnect the positive side of the starter battery to connect the fuse breaker cable on, or do I need to disconnect both live and positive from the starter battery?
Cheers
Im looking at adding in a bank of two leisure batteries due to the amount of power im likely to draw. In this case do you think it would be best to hook up directly to the alternator as opposed to the starter battery? Im just concerned about draining the starter battery
What gauge wire is recommended for a 140 amp 12 V split charge relay?
You know the fuses after each battery want the voltage or watts of it brother tank you
thanks tommy
Id it necessary to add the fuse??
Great video,, DID YOU just bring the ,negetive back too the earth point and finish or did you come from van batt too earth point too leisure batt
my "separator thing" does NOT have a red dot on either stud and is not marked. so what do i do now???
Thanks so much for the simple explanation. Great!! Please tell me what size wire you used?
Thank you mate, this actually makes sense to me hahaha! legend
Hi, I fitted a split charge relay today. When I turn the engine on the LED flicks on and off a few times then stops working. Do you know what could be causing this?
Is there a limit of leisure batteries, can I fit 2-3 leisure batteries 135a each or will I burn the alternator?
Could this charge other batterys not just leisure batterys as I have a race transporter that has 2 main batterys as the lorry runs of 24 volts for main batterys and I have a 12 volt battery that powers my winch so could I use this to work of 1 over the main lorry batterys to the split charge relay then out to my winch battery.
Brilliant thanks
Hi man, what size fuses do you use please?
Got to have a go at doing this now want build a of grid van
Very Good!
Great litle vid, by far one of the easiest to understand. I think I will have ago at fitting one in my little Vaux Combo van. How / what do you then connect to this to be able to plug things into ?
Thanks glad it's helped mate 👍
So this would charge your leisure battery, then from the leisure battery you would go in to a fuseboard and from there out ... I have a video on 12v electrics which may help , I'll drop the link below 👍
Hey there, great video. Do you know what current the relay draws? I'm wondering how to size my wire. I think that relay is 140amps, does that mean that my 100amp wire wouldn't be big enough to handle it? Could i just fit an 80amp inline fuse for example? Thanks
Hello mate , if you buy the split charge relay kit , it comes with everything you need , including the correct cable size, fuses etc 👍
Here's the link to the kit I use

Will be busying this kit for my caddy, great video. Do you have a video or advice for wiring up your appliances / lights etc and also do you recommend a certain leisure battery? Thanks
Hi, I have a 230ah leisure battery, what size of relay should I use for the split charge kit?
Hi just got my one fitted ans when the van is off the red light is staying on how do I fix this problem
They usually do stay on for a while, mine can be on for an hour or so after switching the engine off 👍🏼
@TommysVanLife ok thank you for taking time to reply. I was getting worried
Hi what year is ur van, can u use this type of split charger on any van?
My van is an 2004, If you have a newer van with a smart alternator etc you will need a different split charge 👍
How do work out correct amp for split charge relay ?
Hello I’ve wired my split charge same way as you,but my leasure battery won’t work unless my ignition is on any ideas ....
Hi , i think i understand what the problem is ...
Maybe your leisure battery is flat if it's not powering up appliances until you start the engine ? 👍
@@LT_TOMMY_ il check if there’s any charge in it it’s brand new only fitted it all two days ago ...when I put ignition on ,I get power to leasure battery and able to switch on my lights, fridge ect once I take key out all power drops ...
@@paulyaggymoo9731 Deffo check the charge in the leisure battery with the engine switched off, has the battery got a magic eye on it , maybe an easy way of telling ...let us know how you get on 👍👍👍
@@LT_TOMMY_ will do thanx for reply much appreciated .grt video as I followed you wireing hence why I messaged you ..
No problem, most batteries are at least part charged when new but my battery was brand new and quite low so after a day or so playing about with the interior lights etc it was flat , may be worth charging it over night so you know its being installed fully charged , plus get a voltage reader , even if it's a cheap 12v one that goes in to the cigarette lighter , at least you know roughly what voltage you have 👍
Hi. Do the fuses have a particular name so I can find them on Ebay, cheers
12v blade fuse, sorry it's late, youtube have only just sent me these notifications 🤦♂️👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
I use a leisure battery for window cleaning and wondered if this would be useful for me.
My battery is Yuasa 100amp and it runs 2 pumps each day (approx 5 to 6 hours) 100psi Shurflo. I rather suspect that I am drawing more power than possibly could be topped up, is this the case? Cheers. Steve.
What is the next step .after that how to use electricity
Best video I have found Tommy! One that finally shows the actual fitting and layout of a setup....Many thanks bit a quick question. I got a split charger set but it has 2x 100amp fuses. Is this best as lots on YT have 60 amp or at most 80amp fuses?? Thanks in advance :)
Thanks a lot mate , glad it helped 👍
I usually just use what ever fuses are supplied with the kit 👍👍👍
Most of these kits the rely is a fuse itself, so using fuses these position is a bit of a overkill :)
legend cheers
Nice tidy job what amp is the liesure battery 👍🔋
@@LT_TOMMY_ i like your split charge set up did it cost much how long have you been using it cheers 👍🍻
@@deranocasper I've had the same set up in my last 3 vans and it works great for me mate . Here's the link to the one I use 👍👍

@@LT_TOMMY_ Cheers Tommy i am going to order the split charge kit soon did you purchase your battery of ebay are you getting a run out of it cheers i like your vw lt 35
Yes mate, leisure battery aswell, mine will last 4 days or even 5 with light use 👍
Fuse amp.?
Where'd you get those fuses mate? Ideal!
The fuses all come in with the kit mate👍🏼
I run mine through the van personally 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
i just checked yours i did mine a year ago i still cant get it to work lol bloody van pissing me off
Why 10mm cable? You are only charging the 2nd battery not using it to start the engine! These Voltage Sensitive Relays (Split charge relay) are a pain and waste of money, they annoyingly chatter on/off when both batteries are near fully charged. I have had to replace two with standard relays.
Why don't people use a set of breaker's instead of the fuse's that way you can click the test button to break the circuit any time you choose for maintenence and its easy to rest
That was by far the simplest, well explained, and right to the point video ever on this topic. Thank you!
Thank you mate, glad it helped, notifications are just coming through from a year back 🤦♂️👍🏼
