Extremely helpful. Especially the guidance about making a relief cut to get to the top cut. I'll be doing this task this weekend.
Nice, glad it helped. It’s a little intimidating up front, but taking your time, being safe, and doing a quality job will pay off for years. Plus, you’ll look back and say, “I did that” 👍🏻👍🏻🙌
A very professional "non-professional" job, sir! Proves that a little common sense and know-how goes a long way.
Thank you Max. I tried to do my homework up front, plan every step, then execute as best I could. There’s something very satisfying about doing your own work. 👍🏻
your welding skills are on pair with mine. Glad to see someone else who deals in "functional" welding! Nice project!
Yeah, I’m more of a grinder for sure. I have several welder friends, real pros, but I’m trying to build my rig myself. I’ve got a front bumper install video in the works, including high fender chop.
Clean surfaces remove paint before welding. It will make welding a lot easier. Welding painted metal, the paint contaminates the weld and the puddle.
Absolutely true. All my surfaces were prepped first; gotta get that heat deep 🙌
Great job! You approached it from a common sense perspective and got it done. Way to go
I did my research before tackling it. With time allotted, and the right tools, it’s definitely do-able for most mechanically minded folks
Checking this out to see the process seeing as I may be doing it soon. As a "Semi Professional" lol (Welder/Fabricator for 5+ years ) you would have been better off leaving the welds un polished for strength. Even though they aren't appealing. Great video and thank you for sharing it. It helped a lot of my questions before pulling the trigger.
I hear ya, but I just couldn’t let those welds go, it would have bothered me forever. I burned them in deep, and so far so good. All the best with your project 👍🏻👍🏻
So the welding was….Well at least the videography and music was good! 🤣 I’m doing this mod tomorrow. Thanks for the helpful insight and no bs here’s-how-it-really-happened video. Just subscribed
Thx dirtbag 🙌. Enjoy the process and satisfaction of doing your own work. 👍🏻
Very informative, I have a 2011 GX460 and I'm about to do the same to get some 285/70/17 on their. Great vid!
You’ve got one of the best platforms, in my opinion, to build up. I’m helping a friend build an 08 GX470 and I just love that V8 sound.
Excellent job I was going to do this on our 4R but the shop did it on accident when I was having my bumper done. But I do have the brackets to do this on my Tundra as well.
Cool that the shop did it for you. The hardest part is trying to film and work at the same time.
I’ve got shop envy. I know where I’ll be working on my next project!
Really cool project! Good content, humor and informative. (Except for the shot your brother missed.) Ha! next time bro.
Hey Steve new subscriber here. Coming over from your brother's channel. Looking forward to more of your "transformation" videos on Bushwhacker 🤙-Josh
I thought you looked familiar from another PNW channel I watch, great video Steve. 👍
Mikhail, yes, we did install videos on my channel but have been focusing our attention on the OPNW channel. Glad you’re enjoying it 👍🏻
Looking forward to chopping my Tesla model S, I think this will help. :) Great video and camera work. Looking forward to more videos.
Haaaa! Yeah, let’s get your electric rocket ship ready for some Offroad exploring 😄
Very informative, very clean. I love the relief cuts and will definitely be utilizing those myself. I got some welding gear for about the same price I would have paid a fab shop to do the body mount chop for me so I figure it was worth the investment. I’ll be doing this on my 05 GX470 to fit 35s. Assuming it’s the same idea?
Should be almost identical. Fitting 35’s will likely requiring folding over your pinch weld and maybe even some additional plastic trimming. All the best on your project.
Thabks
I used a hatchet. Not smooth but there is lots of room. Makes some noise in the wind though.
When something makes noise, I turn the radio up 😄. The 34’s go on tomorrow morning 👍🏻
Great Job Guys! When can we schedule my 4 runner chop and skid plate install at the cave?
Haaaaa, did you see the note where it said "non-professional welder"?
Next time, make sure you remove paint from the heat affected zone of the weld. This will prevent pulling impurities into your weld which can result in porosity and inclusions. Good job though!
Reading the credits at the end, we are doing pretty much the same things to our 4Runners. Subscribing and clicking the bell.
Great to have you subscribed. Enjoy your build, and share pics of it.
Great informative video, other than the corny dad jokes and dad's instructional video music.😂
More videos please !
Working on them. Coming soon: Iron Man lift, Total Chaos front diff drop, Toytec rear bump stop extensions, Yota Mafia extended rear brake lines, Westcott Designs rock sliders, CBI skid plates, and a RIGd rear tire carrier/camp table and Jack carrier. All of the above has been installed and videos, time to edit and publish 👍🏻
Nice job! I'm in Oregon too. Any chance you're willing to assist others doing this?
I wish I could, really, but my build is far from done. Since shooting this video I’ve shot several more and am struggling to find the time to edit; it’s so tedious. Shoot me a message with any questions and I’d be happy to chime in to support your effort.
How much more clearance? 1/2"? To replace a rounded edge with a sharp edge. Perplexed...
Not sure what’s perplexing about a very common mod??? It provides closer to an inch at the outer edge, eliminated ALL rubbing, has no sharp edges, and looks factory. All upside, no downside.
Is that SSO cut out going to be a problem with letting water in and rusting?
Shouldn’t be, water and mud can get behind the stock buddy mount. I also added several layers of good paint.
Did you have to go back and "fold" your pinch welds?
No, I have no rubbing at full articulation. If I go to 35’s one day, I’ll have to pound it flat.
How much clearance does this body mount Chop give dosent look very much smaller the orginal mount
You decide how far into the body mount to cut. If you’re running anything 34” and under, you don’t need to cut much.
@@AntonioClaudioMichael Not exactly, the metal plates you weld in are from Southern Style Offroad; I did the cutting and welding.
@@aired-downoverland9239 what I ment but custom is the wheel size is the cause of how much you need to cut which means you are customizing the body mount Chop based on what tire size you want the metal covers to weld on is also custom because your modifying the mounts
@@aired-downoverland9239 you said you decide how far into the body mount you cut based on the tire size you want if it's above 34 inch tires which would make it custom in my opinion
You said you were putting 34's on it? What size exactly can you run with the BMC and a front fender trim? 34x10.5 or something like 315/70? My 4Runner will be here next week and same trim as yours. Mods starting soon thereafter. Doing 2 to 3 in lift and lowering front diff 1 in. C4 winch bumper with high clearance additions and BMC to fit larger tires. Your advice would be welcome. I know FJ's but I think the 4R can take a little larger tire.
Based on what I’m seeing on my own rig, it will easily fit a 34x10.5 tire. My 285/75R17’s are technically 33.8 tall and 11.2 wide. A 315/70R17 is 34.4 tall and 12.4 wide, which would fit on mine as well, as long as the wheels your running move the tire out away from the upper control arm. A little bit more about that is covered in the vid I shot yesterday when I had Method 703’s in 8.5x17 mounted. That vid should be out by next week. To your BIGGER questions, yes, I believe with the BMC and front fender mod, you could run 35’s. Note that 34’s or 35’s are going to tax your motor a little. To compensate for that, I’ll be switching to 4.88 gears when I do my front locker next year.
@@aired-downoverland9239 We are on the same wavelength. Putting 285's on first then doing the gears, front locker, wheels and tires when the 285's get older. Good luck with your build an I will be watching and learning!
Can i just cut it and leave it like that or do i have to weld a flat plate back on?
That’s actually ax really good question. I wouldn’t feel comfortable not welding the piece in. You could cut it out, then drive to a shop that would weld them in for less than $100 clams.
Steve, would you be able to run the Mickey Thompson LT255/85R17?
Here’s the difference between 255/85/17 MT and my 255/75/17 K02’s:
MT = 34.1 tall, 10 wide
K02 = 33.8 tall, 11.2 wide
Based on this I would guess they’ll fit without rubbing, but don’t know for sure. I do think a 10” wide tire will look a bit skinny, but that comes down to personal preference. 👍🏻
What if I'm not a welder or knowing anyone, can I leave that spot empty and just smooth it out?
I wouldn’t. My brother found a shop in WA that would do it for $130, just call around, you’ll find one.
what width wheel were those 34's on?
Im about to fit 285/70s on a 9.5, just want some insight on other size fitment
David, these are currently on the stock 7.5 in. wide wheel. They will eventually be on something wider, but not sure how wide or what offset. With a 9.5, of the offer is 0, watch for the tire getting close to the upper control arm, especially aftermarket upper control arms.
Ok so I've been running 285/70r 17's on stock rims for the last 3 sets of goodyear M/T and never had a problem. The only mod was to grind away some of the front fender before the high clearance smile I put on later. A lot of trail miles on my rig and we have done very well.
@@dennisb.1996 You should have no problem with 285/70’s, on your 7.5 wheels, however, the tire will fit/look different on an 8.5 wheel. As an example, I test fit a friends tire/wheel combo on my rig Tues and this combo moved the tire out toward the edge of the fender. It’s a smaller diameter and width tire, but looked as wide as my 34’s. They were 285/70R17 mounted on an 8.5 width Method 305.
Did you have 702 method wheels . ??? I have does I think the stem is to close to the edge , did you break one doing off-road ?
No, I have Method 704’s. I’ve used them hard and never broken a stem.
@@aired-downoverland9239 oh ok , this was my concern because it looks so close.
Something tells me he's done this before. 😃
The first time you do a buddy mount chop it’s a bit unnerving. This chop, on my personal rig, was a bit nerve racking because the 4Runner was literally brand new. I think I’ll have the same feelings when I start cutting up the front to fit the hybrid bumper and high clearance fender mod.
Why does auto correct always change “body” to “buddy”??? To be clear, I haven’t chopped up a buddy 🙄
Fill in the "SSO". they don't pay you for advertising.
Haaaa, love that. I should ask them for a kickback, especially since I’ll be doing an SSO hybrid front bumper and high fender chop video very soon.
How do you take the fender off?
Three screws and she'll just fall into your hands. The black cap at the corner just pops off two clips by pulling away from the vehicle.
@6:43, what are those work lights you have in there? Are they led and rechargeable?
Bryan, they come from a company called Maxxeon and can be ordered off Amazon; I absolutely love them!
Tear it up....
Can you fit 285/70/17’s on a 5th gen 4runner with a 2” lift without having to body chop it?
I know you can with a 3” front and 2” rear. I think you’d have some rubbing issues during full articulation with a 2” front. That tire is 33.7” tall and 11.2” wide, and I know people run them all the time with a 2” lift, just know if you’re going to wheel hard, you’ll need to do some fender liner trimming.
@@aired-downoverland9239 ok cool, I’ll go with 3” in the front to be safe. I was looking at icons but I’m not that rich so I’m going with the old man emus. Thanks for the response!
do you have a measurement of the metal plate you used?
Sorry, I don’t. It’s made by Southern Style Offroad, they may have dimensions on their site.
My money is on Toyota making the 6th gen not any better than the 5th gen for tire clearance.
I saw “RIGHT WAY” and I thought “what did this guy figure out?” only to watch, you do it, the way everybody else has done it! 👎
Hey Steve new subscriber here. Coming over from your brother's channel. Looking forward to more of your "transformation" videos on Bushwhacker 🤙-Josh
Awesome! Thank you Josh, and welcome. Next video is in editing now.
Hands down, one of the best instructional channels on UA-cam.
