For anyone still on the fence: Coding isn't bad at all! You can always start slow. The more you do it, the easier it will be. Who knows, you might want to make a game where the coding aspect isn't particularly convoluted or difficult.

This is such a useful tutorial! Even after using Gamemaker 2 for a while, it's really helpful to have this beginner intro to refer back to. Thanks for always putting out this quality content!
thank you for saving my life, literally i was going to start with the DnD coding but because of you i got enough courage to learn gml coding, and thank god i did that because there are a LOT of thing you can do with gml coding that you can't with DnD
Had to come bad to GameMaker after experimenting with multiple game engines, but haven't done anything in it since GameMaker the original. Needed a refresher and this certainly helped. I'm excited to check out your content, as well as the others your recommended in the video!
Got interest in GMS2 through your 12 minute speed tutorial. After watching this vid, I've decided to take the plunge and start going through the platform tutorial series.
Thank you very much! I love how you teaching and speaking! Please continue your guides and tutorials. I'm 40 years old and I just starting to learn GMS2. You are my light in the black tunnel of knowledge.
To be fair, this tutorial is AMAZING. I've seen tutorials that stressed me out completely, for I don't understand ANYTHING they say. You saved my life ;-;
Been a bit since I worked in a game engine and GameMaker already feels better to me than Unity did for learning stuff. Used your tutorial in combination with some stuff from GameMaker's manual to get movement going and even figured out how to make WASD work on top of the arrow keys without doubling the movement speed by myself, which bodes well for my understanding of the coding rules. I'll have to take some notes and potentially hand code some stuff on paper to make sure I know the keywords but very excited to get back into game dev from the more practical perspective rather than the theoretical spaces I've been playing in for a while because I disliked the game engines I knew about and didn't wanna find more.
Thank you, coding has always been a challenge for me because how specific and pitch perfect everything has to be. While i will still attempt to learn coding this saves me so much time to test other things.
I was teaching Clickteam Fusion and GDevelop for years. My brother used to use GM1 a lot. I'm here because I think GMS2 can handle the size of the project I'm planning on creating. It's time for me to switch and be the student. Let's do this!
Thanks Shaun great intro lesson. I made my first game on Construct 3 the other day and wanted to see how GameMaker compares. Looking forward to digging through these videos.
Thanks for making these tutorial things. I have been extremely confused going through the tutorials Gamemaker provides themselves, so a visual one like this is of major help.
im only at 10:20 but this is pretty helpful so far, its not like any other tutorials on things ive watched where they are using some like chinese version of the app so everythings different, everything here is right and pretty thoroughly explained.
im 13 and ive been interested in game making but couldnt find the right tool that was extremely heavy on being experienced, game maker seemed simple enough and this tutorial helped alot, thanks!
Ey what should I do if my objects are invisible? In the debug it does not show anything except backgroung. And the objects reacts to every other invisible objects. In object editor I chose the visible option and nothing else. Can you please tell me what to do?
Thank you so much, I just made my sprite moving all around instead of just left. I'll improve on it by making a demo character with walking and idle animation. If I make it far in this game development thingie, just know you were my first tutorial! >:)

3 types of basic resources: sprites, objects, and rooms. Drag and Drop is easier right away, but harder with complex tasks. Coding is harder right away, but easier with complex tasks. You will ALWAYS need to check the documentation for GML, even when you are a master at it.
I named my sprite hitbox and when he put the s in front, i thought that was mandatory so i did. When you think about it you’ll probably understand if you didnt in the first place
Great content, what is the best way to start learning ? do you have very small hyper casual games tutorial ? or do you know any tutorial that type of games ?
even now that i'm interested in learning gml's coding, i still get a bit upset when i don't see people doing proper tutorials for gml visual. Okay, everybody uses gml code, all tutorials are using it, but still it's sad to see such an interesting feature for begginer's get neglected just because "it's more relevant to learn how to code", we could have at least a little bit of attention to it. Anyway this was a good video, thanks for the tutorial
A bigger, or more underlying part of the reason is that since very few people use the visual/D&D stuff, very few people know much about it. I would happily make at least some content for GameMaker visual but I know very little about it and it would take a lot more work for me to make a video about it. Given there's *always* either new stuff to cover, or old stuff that needs covering again for new versions etc in GameMaker when *only* thinking about GML code, it's just impossible for the incentives, time and energy to line up. I imagine this is probably true for most GM content creators. While tutorials get people into something, in order for people to make tutorials there have to be people that are already into and good at something, and enough of them that among them there are people willing and able to make good tutorials. Sadly I think this just isn't really the case for GML visual, and it is especially hard given how much it has also changed in recent years.
I get an error saying "could not create project or specifided path. You may not have permission to save here." I've tried everything and it still doesn't work?
do they have classes and a book for this at a city college somewhere??? i will watch all video but i would like more please. i would like a certification for a program so i can really work with someone to learn it. i am already stuck on the video gml as i says just look it up and then it doesn't say anything else which means making a really lot of broken program and projects never get finished.
