These guys play at this level because there emotions required this nuance. But everyone has there own sentiment, and fucking a man, it must be hell of fun to play this good and tight.
What I love about Ari is being able to watch him refine his style over the years. I've been listening to him since I was a teenager, and it seems to me that he has slowly but surely refined his style- making it more controlled, precise, and sophisticated, without ever losing that crazy spastic wildness thats always made him so fun to watch and listen to. A true beginners mind.
Jeff Hamilton is my perfect Model for a Drummer. I'll bet anything Ari is a huge Admirer/Fan. It's such a pleasure to discover this rare talent. Ari, you're absolutely one of the best Drummers I have ever heard. Harmony and Syncopation all in one player? Hey i'm in. Let's hear more!
First off, Hoenig can swing (and does, see his arrangements of "Moanin'," "The Way You Look Tonight,"and his original "Birdless."). In fact, he can swing better than a lot of drummers who actually restrict themselves to pure bop playing. Hoenig explores other styles, and indeed, he doesn't always swing in those styles. That doesn't mean "it's all for nothing", it just means he has different goals for his music. I for one am glad he's pushing musical boundaries rather than only focusing on swing.
swing is a cliché of jazz. look at guiliana, nate smith, nate wood, brian blade, jojo meyer, benny greb, matt garstka and basically every famous modern drummer of the last 10 years, they all play mostly straight.
I keep coming back to this live recording, but I wish the drum cameras weren't SOOOOO off time. Ari hits a cymbal and I only hear the sound 3 seconds afterwards. The guys are doing such a great job on this song, and I want the recording to show that. The visuals for the drums are simply off-time for the first 2 or 3 minutes. After that, it syncs up.
Sensationell!! I heard you guys at Northea jazz in Rotterdam in 2009,very impressive. I love this video.Beautiful playing, fine composition, very good sound and picture Hope to see and hear you again at North sea jazz perhaps in 2012??
@@constantinezh7156 Eh there are some clips that are clearly out of sync, but most of it is pretty fine, maybe the video is a little late by a few milliseconds but not much for the majority of it
the head is in 11/16 , you can count it like one bar of 3/16 and then just a bar of 4/8 "123 1 2 3 4" That time sig continues throughout the whole solo sections and the little parts in between the head. The slower section alternates between 5/4 and 6/4,
+sr_gregorio I believe you're referring to the stick shots? That's something Ari likes to do. Essentially, his left hand is resting the stick against the head, while his right stick strikes the left one. It results in a higher pitched "pop" than a normal stroke, while being a bit more tame than a traditional rim shot.
@tcslick420 Aside from a sort of faint general resemblance, it's also interesting that they play in similar way. They both seem to have similar stick technique.
@decadyne They both studied at North Texas w/ Ed Soph... that's the reason haha. Carlock turned to Rock/Funk while Ari stuck to a more traditional jazz style representative of Soph's work.
So what you are saying, is because you dont dig the approach he's going for, that must mean fundamentally he's doing something wrong and it's not that you're level of perception that needs looking at. Yeah. Right.
Holy shit. It must be fun to be that good at the drums and the guitar and bass.
Arthur Garwood Delahooke Depends on you.... Play something more simple and have fun, too.

@@theclash435 Fucking a man, amen
@@theclash435 that's really interesting, I've never heard anyone say anything like that before. unique way to think about it
It totally looks so

Best Metal face belongs to a Jazz Drummer
Ari is a complete freak! How in the hell is he hitting all of those notes with such grace?
the stank face is strong with this one! phenomenal playing.
I have listened to this song 100 times and I've played drums for 10 years and I will never be this confident in 11/8 ever.
Yes, you will.

Astonishing Ari
my thoughts exactly... wonderful touch and every hit has the right amount of volume... fantastic...
OMG that ending is so SICK.

Oh and don't forget Chris Daddy Dave, basically since Herbie Hancock Jazz has been getting more and more straight.
..beautiful drumming.. ;-)
@Sandemose Thank you, excellant musicians

AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!
It would be so much better if the video and sound were synced.
They are synced up you have to really watch the drummers hands.

excuse my english, yeah Im refering to the stick shots. Thanks, I get confused when saw ir for the first time. Now I can see it.
+sr_gregorio No problem!
Probably because the audio and video are a bit out of sync on drums.

fucking awesome dudeeeee!!,
@331paradiddle its Gilad Hekselman not Kurt Rosenwinkel.
who is on guitar, is that Kurt Rosenwinkel. Also who is bass player. This is absolutely beautiful playing. Everybody listening so well.
It should be a Meinl Dragon Ride. Sounds great, and sadly enough they don't make them anymore. Stopped sometime during the 80's I think?
oh yah!
JEEEEEZ
AAAAAAHHHH Damn!

@Etwizzy99
Wow, that's interesting, actually. Thanks for the info!
he reminds me of keith karlock, how he moves and facial expressions

Does anybody know what ride he uses in this video?
:-) Maneiro!!!

Does anyone know who this guitarist is?
Matt Cleary gilad heckselman
Is it just a soundcheck ? O.o
@timh7403 Makes sense since they went to the same college.
Love both of those drummers but I have to say I prefer Ari's vocabulary.
Great observation skills man. And I am not being sarcastic.
I wish I could understand what's happening here :-(, nonetheless it doesn't stop me for enjoying it!
audio and video out of sync

Yeah. Right.
He´s the drummer from Notre Dame.
Orlando LaFlemming on bass (spelling?)

I believe the head's in 11? I'm not sure
This vid would be gold if it was synced.
