That’s the psg world. The full lesson is out there but crusty ass boomers still wanna charge you $60 for a lesson from the 80s from a dead guy who’s wife has no interest or ability to keep running the business Then they lament that there’s no new blood. It’s because you nickel and dime people for every single thing. And keep everything under lock and key.
Complete genius. Don't know why this suddenly popped onto my UA-cam, but I spoke to his wlfe not long after he died and she was a charming woman. I believe she also has died in 2021. I'm left handed, so I never eventually got into pedal steel, but I did apply RH alpha stuff to the dobro and it is brilliant for palm and pick blocking.
I've been playing with a flexible right hand forever. Peaked knuckle and flatter hand, palm and pick blocking without thinking about it. Same with vibrato, rolling and shaking ,what ever suits the song
I don't know how far you got with this, but there is stuff on the SG forum from 2021, basically with a great number of complaints about the college following Fran Newman's death. I can find no current listing of any actual product from the Jeffran College. Courses sometimes become available used online. Meanwhile, DeWitt Scott Deluxe Pedal Steel Guitar Method Book/Online Audio is really good. Good luck
John do you know what type of thumb picks these are Jeff is using here? I’ve always wondered that. The very first lesson I took with Tony Rankin in Miamisburg Ohio (lifelong friend) , he taught me the crease line thing. Very valuable. I’ve never seen this video so thanks for sharing this segment John.
Lol! Those thumb picks actually suck. I bought them years ago from Jeffran Music (Jeff's business) and they always broke right at the sharp bend. I see lots of people using Fred Kelly Speed Picks now. I use them for pedal steel and Travis picking on acoustic guitar. Jeff always was a "my way or the highway" kind of instructor!
I assume that's Jeff doing the picking but his hand is not in the position he's trying to sell. Each player finds what works for him best, we don't all have the same hand size and flexibility.
As has been stated by others, everyone is different. Jay Dee Maness does not have his RH like this (his is more like what Jeff was saying "not" to do). Others may use different techniques as well. Newman was a hoss on steel but our hands are all a little different. It's a good guide but not gospel. If it doesn't work for you, experiment. Cheers!
My favorite instructor.
I need more of this. It's the best palm blocking instruction I've found yet

If I tried to pick like this I would really suck 😅
The flat hand works fairly well for Jay Dee Maness.
Agreed.

desperately seeking for the full version of this course, anyone have an idea of how I can procure?
Ask on the Steel Guitar Forum

Did Jeff always have the cool striping on his steels? The Franklin he used in some of his courses had some on it as well.
He did that himself with automotive tape. Jeff was a great guy as well as a great teacher.
post more of Jeffs if you have thanks
If you find tablature helpful, you can find the exercises written out for this course on The Steel Guitar Forum.
My favorite go to for stage blanking moments. "Newman hand Newman hand Newman hand..."

Jeff made those thumbpicks, I have a couple in my seat. He used an air corn popper to bend them.
@@joe-gh9qg wanna sell one?
Try the Dunlop 9051R. I think they make sizes. Mines a medium.

It's really old school.
Now I'm sure both work but I have to play Joe Wright style
Gdamn that's a hot paint job. Very helpful thank you.
