If there’s something wrong with your body and you don’t know why, it’s terrifying. You want desperately to know what it is and how it’s going to affect you. Hence why you see so many people either self-diagnosing or coming to foregone conclusions about their health these days. Don’t get me wrong, if you’re able to see a doctor, definitely see one and get their opinion instead of relying on the internet. But it’s a symptom of the current state of our healthcare system. I’ll give an example: in the UK, it was easier to get Taylor Swift Eras Tour tickets than it was to make an appointment with an NHS dentist. Not good.

The only reason why I was able to get a GI doctor so quickly was because I was taken to get a barium swallow, and they found that the entirety of my esophagus was narrowed to less than half the size it should've been. So, I was seen as a more urgent case, and even then the place was 2 hours away due to our insurance not covering other places. I'm thankful for that, but I'm genuinely disheartened that something so severe is what's needed to get quick care in some places, and it pushes other people's appointments back.

I got a chronic condition (eosinophilic esophagitis, to be specific), so I can understand why Jake would be upset. Health anxiety is a very real thing. I have it, too, both before and it worsening as a direct result of learning about my illness. It is also very difficult to get to a specialist in my part of the US, so I can understand looking up symptoms (though I don't recommend it). I only got to a GI doctor (and by extension my diagnosis) because a barium swallow scan revealed my entire esophagus was severely constricted, to about half, or a little under half of the regular size. Here's how Jake Doolittle could have made his video work. All he needed to say was that anxiety dumping and trauma dumping is wrong and that Ethan needs to keep concerns like that private because everyone has a burden of some kind that's really serious and is a constant concern, and they don't need someone else's burden to think about. Boom. No objection! And best of all, it's like a five-minute video at most. No waffling, no beating the horse by repeating yourself. Short and to the point.

I agree, and if he had extended some grace to Ethan then it would have gone okay. Jake knows how hard auto-immune diseases are to get diagnosed. It can easily take years. Some doctors will tell you it's nothing and that you're overstating your pain/symptoms. Jake experienced that first hand. He has trauma from it. He should have come from a place of understanding and compassion, critiquing Ethan for broadcasting his health anxiety so much is fine and understandable, there should probably be some limits there. But Jake acted the exact same way the doctors treated him when he was trying to get diagnosed and his arguments were comically bad faith and hypocritical.

First of all, Ethan may not be saying all of this results and secondly, if you are not a doctor that is active in that patients treatment you don’t know anything. Certain markers can mean different things based on sex, medications they are taking, symptoms among a vast range of other things that can cause certain results to mean certain things for different patients. Additionally, how do many people cope with negative emotions? Humor. When are we going to stop policing how some deal with negative emotions? Jake goes around saying he cares so much about mental health and chronic illness but how he has treated this is horrid. He is not a medical professional. What he has delt with through his own medical issues does not make him a professional in that field.

Here's how Jake Doolittle could have made his video work. All he needed to say was that anxiety dumping and trauma dumping is wrong and that Ethan needs to keep concerns like that private because everyone has a burden of some kind that's really serious and is a constant concern, and they don't need someone else's burden to think about.
Boom. No objection! And best of all, it's like a five-minute video at most. No waffling, no beating the horse by repeating yourself. Short and to the point.
Yeah, also he could have just explained how he's misunderstanding symptoms etc with light criticism. Ethan might have been mildly annoyed and referenced it in passing on the show, but nobody would have really cared for the most part. But instead he has to go saying he was lying all for maybe $2000 in donos lol. Which is a lot for most people, but I don't think it's worth the effort even almost for Ethan
I agree, and if he had extended some grace to Ethan then it would have gone okay. Jake knows how hard auto-immune diseases are to get diagnosed. It can easily take years. Some doctors will tell you it's nothing and that you're overstating your pain/symptoms. Jake experienced that first hand. He has trauma from it. He should have come from a place of understanding and compassion, critiquing Ethan for broadcasting his health anxiety so much is fine and understandable, there should probably be some limits there. But Jake acted the exact same way the doctors treated him when he was trying to get diagnosed and his arguments were comically bad faith and hypocritical.

tbh i think even that would have gotten some backlash because a majority of the podcast viewers aren't there for the content but rather because they like ethan and the crew, and would listen to him talk about his personal issues all day long. i think jake only could have gotten away with saying that ethan sensationalizing a chronic illness he admittedly knows nothing about is problematic, because that's true even if it wasn't what ethan was trying to do

It amazes me that some people of the internet will present certain things at fact when it’s clearly an opinion with my basis in fact.
Jake saying that the few lab results that Ethan shared meant that there was nothing wrong is absolutely ridiculous. First of all, Ethan may not be saying all of this results and secondly, if you are not a doctor that is active in that patients treatment you don’t know anything. Certain markers can mean different things based on sex, medications they are taking, symptoms among a vast range of other things that can cause certain results to mean certain things for different patients.
Additionally, how do many people cope with negative emotions? Humor. When are we going to stop policing how some deal with negative emotions?
Jake goes around saying he cares so much about mental health and chronic illness but how he has treated this is horrid. He is not a medical professional. What he has delt with through his own medical issues does not make him a professional in that field.
