First thought is that no matter who is coaching, the Huskers do not have the personnel to win. Offensive, and defensive lines especially. But, a coach named John Wooden (UCLA basketball way back when), took a group of players whose abilities were suspect, and made them national champions. It can be done.

This bye week is a good opportunity for these new interim coaches to get a plan together, get the players motivated and decide who should actually start and who needs to be benched. I'm not expecting a miracle by the next game day but I think we'll start to see improvement.

The question I've been asking myself the past 22 years is our problem the players we're getting or the coaches we have? I'm still not sure but our recruiting numbers aren't bad. So I feel our problem has been coaching and lack of player development. I hope these guys can get things turned around. I'd like to see us be competitive again.

player devloment has been 99% of our problems. Since 2000 there have been just 20 Huskers taken in the first 2 rounds of the draft. between 73-97 Osborne sent 33 in the first 2 rounds. Since 2000 Nebraska has sent 74 players in the draft. Between 1973 and 1980 Nebraska has 72 players drafted. Heck with with Osborne recuits though 5 of his 6 years Solich only had 33 NFL recruits.

Despite yesterday's travesty. Mickey is our guy and here's why.
In 2008 another little known WR coach was elevated to interim HC after his boss was fired after a 3-3 start despite a preseason #9 ranking. This interim coach was known as an incredible recruiter and a player's coach. He was able to get the team to the Gator Bowl only to lose to NU. 2009 he won his first divisional title. 2010 he had a 6-6 team but had 2 top 10 recruiting classes filling out the roster. 2011 he won 10 games and never looked back. With 2 titles in his pocket Dabo Swinney is one of the most successful coaches in the business. The parallels are there. Give Mickey 3 years and we won't regret it. GBR!

Great analysis, Eric. YES, I think the D can be turned around at least to a degree this season. Why do I feel this way? Because there is so much wrong with the way the D plays; from tackling like my mom to giving every receiver that get's past the line of scrimmage at least a 5 yard cushion downfield and then calling that "coverage". So pathetic. Yes, I believe some it will start to be fixed after this bye week and the D should be playing a lot better by the end of the season.

I do not believe anyone can turn this defense around in one season. He can make small changes, emphasize, fundementals, tackling, gap soundness, defensive assignments, etc. He can tinker with the scheme, game plan etc. He can make incremental improvement. But he can not turn this defense around in one year or even two. No one can.
The core problem at Nebraska, not just on defense, but on offense, and special teams as well, is lack of talent. It is a combination of failure to recruit, and develop talent. For whatever reason, atheletes at Nebraska are as. good as they are going to get when they arrive at Nebraska. I could name so many athletes who have arrived at Nebraska with so promise and never improved. But instead I will use one as an example. Adrian Martinez.
Martinez arrived his first year with so much athletic promise. His freshman year he looked like he could be a surefire Heisman canidate, with the proper coaching and development. Quite frankly while we saw glimpses of that promise over the four years he was here, he never again came close the promise he showed his fresman year. That wasn't so much Adrian's failure, as the failure of the coaches to develop his strengths and minimize his weaknesses. The truth is Martinez was far more Eric Crouch, than Mackenzie Milton. Something that Scott Frost and his staff failed to acknowledge.
    But back to the defense.
Our defensive line is slow, physically weak, and mentally soft.
Adam you would know far better than I, but so much of getting off a block is just mental toughness, and pure want to. We can't get off blocks to get pressure on the Quarterback, and we can't get off blocks to stop the run. The linebackers are too slow and small for the power 5. And they lack gap soundness.
I am going to give the secondary a slight bit of a pass. As it is almost impossible to cover when the opposing QB has all day to throw. That said, it appears to me like the DB's are too slow, and lack the knowedge of their responsibility on any given play, and quite simply can not tackle.
This will be a bit harsh, but from what I have seen to this point we are have the talent to be a very good FCS football team. And that falls directly on recruiting and development.
I don't think that the average Nebraska fan realizes how far our talent level has dropped. When Scott Frost was hired, I believed we were 5-7 years away from having the talent to consistently challenge the Ohio St's and Michigans of the football world. 5 years later, I still believe we are 5-7 years away from that same goal.
Lastly, I would like to say this to the fans. In the last 20 plud years the University has made many coaching mistakes, dating back to the firing of Frank Solich. Hiring Scott Frost was not one of them.
5 years ago everybody wanted him. Not just Nebraska, but every football team that needed a coach. At the time, he was the right hire. The only hire.
I wanted him, I believed he would bring us back. I don't know what went wrong. I've heard the rumors, but you, Adam, and others closer to the program, would know far better than I.
From the outside looking in it seems it was a combination of bad luck, too much loyalty to his previous staff, perhaps a bit too much arrogance, and stubbornness, and in the last two years, desperation coaching decisions. And all of this was only underscored by recruiting failures, and failures in player development.
I love the Huskers, I am a lifelong fan from the days of Bob and Tom, and I always will bleed Husker red. I still believe with the right leadership, and patience, we will return to relevance. But it is a long road. We must remember, that to the young players coming up, we are in the same boat as the Kansas Jayhawk's. To today's young players, they have never seen Nebraska do anything but lose. Our golden years mean nothing to today's youth. They've never seen it. Today the Alabama's, Clemson's, Oklahoma's are who we use to be. And it takes time to change that perception.

The remaining coaches are in a no-win scenario, but they can make/improve the team's performance by practicing tackling and blocking in practice. I believe more running and less passing may help the deficient defense to stay off the field longer. Anyway Grant, Allen, or Ervin or 2 of the 3 of them ccan be on the field at the same time? More zone for DBs and we need to put a spy on quarterbacks who can run.

The best defense Chinander had, was last year, ranked 50th or so. But it was the best we've seen from him. He should have been gone 2 years ago. And he may be a nice guy, but his defenses were B-A-D!! I give Busch 3 games, and we'll see improvement. Because we can only go up from where Chinander had us.

IF Urns were to be hired Trev needs to clearly spell out why he is there. Let's be honest about 5 years is the best we can expect out of Urbs. But he IS a proven winner everywhere he has gone. Good dudes and good people do not mean good coaches. Do like the idea of letting Mickey earn the job. OU was a tall task in 1 week. While I do not expect it 6-6 is still possible however unlikey.

Point of attack is the problem obviously! I am not sure if it is development or coaching but I can’t believe how big holes are, I am 68 years old and I can walk through them! I wonder if going back to players who have quick feet and can leverage there opponents. Today there is a thinner line in between athletes than even when Osborne was coach but we have to do better at getting a meaner line men.

I also pray that they roll C Thompson out of the pocket, he's a great athlete and there's no reason why his legs/versatility shouldn't be utilized. I'm not sold on Whipple!!! There is little, if any, misdirection. Players like A Brown/Palmer would be excellent weapons/diversions on fly sweeps or reverses.
