Let's Play Pilotwings 64 - #1. A 'Perfect' Beginning

- Hello everybody, and welcome to my new Let's Play!
Welcome to the world of Pilotwings 64, an old Nintendo 64 launch title that was majorly, but obviously overlooked by more mainstream early N64 titles (Super Mario 64 being an obvious example).
The game revolves around using different air vehicles and perfecting the use of them in a variety of different missions and tests. The basic goal of the game (since there really doesn't seem to be a plot) is to become a world-class pilot of BIBLICAL proportions and we do that by trying to score high on all of our tests. You can technically beat this game by scoring a bronze medal on every class, but I will be going for an all-gold playthrough. I could try and aim for an "All-Perfect" run (which basically requires getting a "100" on every mission), but getting that is something that I have never done and the reward for that is honestly not worth it. An all-gold playthrough is good enough.
I also plan to get a gold medal on all the side-games (or rather, all the sidegames you CAN get a gold medal on), but that will be shown at the end of the playthrough once I complete all of the missions involving the 3 main vehicles.
I know that project will be pretty "hit or miss" with my subscribers, and I realize that, but it's a game I have always enjoyed playing, so that is one of the main reasons why I am doing this game. Also, it's pretty short and it won't affect any of my Majora uploads (which is what I will explain next). Just keep in mind that this first episode will be pretty "explanatory," and most of it will be just me talking about the mechanics of the game. I think the commentary should be better for the following episodes.
UPLOAD SCHEDULE: For those wondering about the upload schedule, I will pretty much be uploading this project whenever I want to, so there is not really going to be any schedule. Expect me to upload this project on days when I will not have other things to upload (Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays). Also, as I said in the above paragraph, this project will not stop my daily Majora updates. I really can't afford to slow down Majora at this time as I would like to finish the game before the project goes on 3 months (just now hitting 2). Also, just to tell you guys a little secret, since I have to send my Wii in soon for repairs, and since I'm playing Majora on my Wii, I'd like to have that project over with before then, so I can quickly get my Wii repaired and back in action for another big project I have planned for the Fall. But yeah, I've been rambling now, so basically all you need to gather from that in terms of this project is, "This will be updated whenever," so don't ask me when I will update it because it will be my call.
Otherwise, that is about it. I hope you guys will enjoy the project for what it is, because I know some of you guys can only find "cartoon flight simulation" so much fun, but this was a project I wanted to try out, so hence why I am doing it.

For this video, I introduce the game and complete the Beginner class missions with ease and perfection.....literally. I also start doing the Hang Glider Class A missions, but then the UA-cam time limit comes into play. :P - Ігри
Man I miss this game... Lifa was so simple back then. No DLC, no day1 patches, just a few missions and your own drive to surpass yourself.
This game was like one of my favs when I was kid, it actually means a lot for me, my dad was a pilot, he saw it in some city and bought for me so when he came he gave it to me as a gift and I loved it really much because it was my dream to become a pilot like him but well my dream was crushed because of my daltonism, he had an accident on his plane and passed away 13 years ago so whenever I hear pilot wings man it bringns me.some.good memories
Sorry to hear your dad passed. He sounds like a great guy and I bet he'd be proud of you.
WOW this is bringing back so many memories!! Thanks for uploading this!! Haha, man I never realized how much this game influenced me as a kid. It was the only 64 game I had for a long time. That score review music is so smooth, lol.
I don't even remember that I had that game, but I remember playing it and it was a very good game.
You have no clue how much I nostalgia'd when I saw this. This was one of the games that defined my childhood. I remember playing this when I was like 13. the best part of this game was the fights against Mecha Eagle or whatever he was called.
13:51 I can imagine the characters saying, "SO! You enjoy making us get burned! Come here smart guy!" They pull you into the game and force you to fly into the flames.
Superb game. Played this a great deal on my brand new N64 when it came out in the UK. The graphics were amazing for the time.
Pure quality. We all miss these simple days of life that fuzzy feeling in the heart all comes back such an amazing experience, now we have the best of everything and still aren't satisfied we always want more more more.
No explanation necessary, this is one of my favorite games of all time. Good job.
So far I must say I'm really intrigued by this game. Since I never had a N64, I never played or ever heard of this game. Good first video and keep up the good work.
Played Mario64 at the kiosk stand at Toys R Us, but Pilotwings64 was the first game I actually played when I got my N64 home. You'd be surprised back in '96 how easily games actually were sold out. PW64 was AWESOME when it came out, and I have so many fond memories from this game :) rock on
Perhaps the most underrated N64 games from this era of Nintendo. Yet, it really showed off the systems capabilities when it launched. Graphically, in terms of how much can be done in terms of landscape. A forgotten gem.
Such a great game. I loved the Little States map, it was really amazing considering it came out in 1996! The music was pretty good too, it definitely didn't feel like it lacked anywhere compared to other games considering the time period. Thanks for the upload man!
the nostalgia from these videos is almost too much to take. I also remember a glitch on the "mini 50 states" map in which I would land on top of the world trade center with the rocket pack, and one of the NPC hang gliders would glitch right directly into and out of one of the world trade centers. it was freaky.
When i played this one, i used to do it just for fun, because i didn't know exactly how to play. I try it to, but sometimes it was a little difficult. Thank you again to make me remember my childhood.
I've never even heard of this game, lol.
But that's what I like so much about your LPs, because you're usually playing non-mainstream games. I'm looking forward to this :)
Your shenanigans with the flame remind me of when my cousins would play the original Pilotwings. As my uncle put it, "On PURPOSE they don't open the parachute." They were trying to maneuver the character to make the bat signal.
this is crazy i was already subed to you and i just found this game in my basement. i typed in lets play pilotwing 64 into google and it brings me your content. SO HAPPY!
This game was the first thing I ever played on the 64 and I haven't seen it since then. Crazy nostalgia right now.
Great choice of game, Slim! I really liked this game back in the day and am looking forward to seeing your LP of it! :D
Ah, this is definitely a fun game, but I haven't played it in forever. Just flying around in general is what I always enjoyed about it. One of my favorite things in the game is just how funny it is when you crash and being able to see a replay of it. XD
Sounds like a fun project, Slim, and I haven't watched a Let's Play of this yet either. Looking forward to it, bud.
Great memories of this game, mainly from the photograph missions.
brings back a lot of great memories. i love this game.
I loved this game back when i played 64 all the time. Great game.
this game brought back a lot of memories of my childhood
This is making me want to rummage my old cartridges and pop in ol' PW for some good nostalgic fun.
oh my GOD! I played this game when I first moved to my home town with my cousen and I hada freaking blast. I mean, I was too young to know what was going on, but the colors were bright and kept me entertained
13:48! Ooooh, that's gotta hurt!
I've never noticed this game before, but I'll watch to see how you do here. Best of luck with it.
Loved this game happy memories of being younger with my mates round hanging out and now its family life and 9-5 chores lol
I like this game. I never actually beat it, but it is like a 3D game of the Pilotwings for SNES, which is one of my favorite games from that system. A odd, but pleasant surprise, that you are LPing this game :)
easily one of the best 64 games. Very underrated
I remember playing this when I was 10. This gonna be an interesting Let's Play.
you have a good voice for this, im gonna watch through all this and some more of your vids
I've played this game when I was a kid and I was playing it recently on my emulator and I considered doing a let's play of it sometime in the future. I'm looking forward to how the rest of the project is going to go. (Although I already know that it is going to be awesome as always!)
Game looks pretty cool. It's nice that some of your LP's are of games a lot of people have never heard of or played before. I'd like to see you do more N64 games if it's possible, like maybe re-doing Donkey Kong 64? That may never happen, but it's something I'd like to watch.
Anyways, good luck on the LP/Project Slim/Rob. ;)
Two songs I remember listening to while playing this: Angry Again by Megadeth and Born To Raise Hell by Motorhead. Nostalgia's a crazy feelin
I've heard a lot about this game, but I never played it nor did I see a playthrough of it. I'm sure this will be a great project, and also it's a game not many have LPed before, so it will be interesting until the end!
when i played, i liked to explore and go nd look in the tunnels and waterfalls and stuff, it was really fun
Fun fact. Lark is actually Nester from Nintendo Power
@TheJman5683 Hell, it even looks like Nester! I didn't notice that.
Ah, such a beauty for it's time. I have to say looking back from graphics now it looks... well you can guess what I'm going to say (compared to now). However, for only 64MB of RAM the N64 really made use of what it had.
Slim, I'm glad you did this one for us. This reminds me of being about 9 years old and in my dad's house when he lived on his own.
Btw, could you check your mail? I sent you something.
I remember this game! My cousin had a copy of it!
Good times, good times.
The start of my favourite non-Mario project from you, Slim. :) Ahh... good times.
Vraiment un jeu extraordinaire et beaucoup de souvenirs.
Just got done with Pilotwings for 3ds. This is a great game, hope they make more.
Looks like a fun game. Guess I should add it to my list of wanted games
I love the music in this game
yes!
Finally, a game I'm never gonna play, so I'm gonna watch this one. I watch Mario Party, but I don't watch MM because when I finish Ocarina, I wanna download that.
Wow. The memories. You know, I think the only reason I want to find my N64 is so I can play this game again. XD
Why do you think people haven't heard of this game? It was a huge success commercially and critically, it was even a million seller.
People (like me) LOVE this game.
I used to play Pilotwings 64 all the time as a kid
Holleh I used to LOVE to play this game. To travel around the country was fun and just the scenery. Damn good game lol
Wow....I never expected you to do a playthrough of this...
Literally dug out my N64 and started playing this game again yesterday. What a great game it was/is. As for bungierules comment - well, Pilotwings on the 3DS will have one island, and I guarantee that Wuhu? Island doesn't have a tenth of the appeal that Little States has in PW64. Longevity is going to be a real issue in that game, an island seen twice before in Wii games is going to get old real quick
this really helped me
Oh man does this game bring back some old memories :D.
That scream made me go O.o and laugh at the same time.
omg pilot wings and with yooou cant get any better! :D
Ooh the nostalgia!!!
Yay for a new Let's Play!
One of the best games ever!
Aaah memories! I actually enjoy this game but it gets awfully hard at some point. Also, it's in the first N64 games ever released!
I think I had this game when I had my first N64. I remember the hang-gliders at least =P
Huh, I've never actually played this game, I always wanted to as a kid though...
I guess this is the next best thing. :P
Anywho, good luck with the LP!
I love this game I want a remake I used to love cruising on the helicopter
I remember playing this game a loooonnng time ago, but I could never remember what it was called until I saw this video. lol
Wow I remember this game but that was years ago since I played it.
cool pilotwing o loved this game
I remember this from your live stream. Funny stuff. =)
YEEEEESSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love you now Slim.
A most righteous game indeed.
I actually knew of Pilotwings 64 from a Nintendo Power N64 promotional video.
Man this game was awesome.
LOVE THIS GAME!
Now I will admit. I like this game, and I'm interested in how this LP will go.
I love this game
holy fucking nostalgia
Never heard of the game but it should be an interesting LP.
NOSTALGIC!
All of my nostalgia
@TheNinwii I don't believe it but your right O.o. I looked it up and the N64 had 4MB of RAM. I always thought the 64 stood for the ram. Shoot.
I almost shit my pants when I saw Mario's face carved into the mountain when I first played this.
thnks i saw this game in a magazine and i wanted to see the mountain with marios face and the playthrough
Holy shit, i used to play this all the time, and i just figured out what it was called.
I LOVE PILOTWINGS 64!!! ZOMGOODNESS!!!
I fing love this game!!!!!!!
i remember you played this game during a stream bout a year ago.
Good choice, Slim. =)
THE FUCKING MEMORIES. AHHHH.
whoa, I'm not sure how you could dislike this game. I got it along with my N64 back in early '97 and the graphics/gameplay were still fairly cutting edge back then. I mean, all I had was a Genesis and 486 PC, and this was something brand new. Looks dated now, but playing anything on the N64 instantly puts me in a mindset of being 10-11 years old back then. Shit was amazing back then. Don't like it? Don't watch and spare us the lame comments. haha
hey slim do oyu see megafreack anywhere in act1? (because he is on ice on his ecco let's play! XD)
Never heard of this game before now, but it looks pretty fun. Arcadey and to the point. ^_^ Do you know if it's available for Virtual Console?
I used to play the hell outa this game alot
Best launch game ever.
1. Did you announce this? (in a video?)
2. I will watch ANY of your LPs no matter what
3. How many vids do you expect this to take?
awesome played this ones as a kid always frusterated me though
Did they have a pilotwings for the snes too?
@mrbluey7657
1. He doesn't take requests.
2. I'm about 99.99% sure that no one would ever do an entire LP of a game just because one random subscriber was stuck on it.
This really brings back memories I played this all the time my dad used to laugh at the giant robot that you get to bomb
THIS GUY IS A GOOBER
