After watching one of your other videos, I bought the weigh safe middle weight. I have about 1200lbs of tongue. I have air bags. If I don't air up the bags I get alot of tongue bounce or porposing. Is the heavy tongue cause? Would you add more distribution? Also would you air the bags to the desired height for the truck and then set up weight distro? Would you set hitch and then level out with bags?
I am using the Blue Ox Sway Pro. I tow a 34 ft 9700 lb travel trailer and love it. I get no sway. I do believe if it is not connected correctly, you may get sway. I also do not get any porpoise movement. I have been towing for over 20 years
I thought I’d share my review for consideration. First off, love your videos and the way you break everything down. I purchased both the Weigh Safe Middle Weight and the B&W Continuim. My tow rig is a 2023 Suburban Duramax with the max towing package pulling a 2023 Flagstaff Superlite 29BHS. I towed with the Weigh Safe for 300 miles (highway and two lane roads windy and non windy conditions). I also pulled the same amount of miles and conditions on the same rig with B&W. The B&W was night and day better then Weigh Safe in every aspect, especially sway control. The Weigh Safe honestly was so bad, even dangerous, with the sway control that I completely reset it up three times, watching multiple videos and having my wife assist with measurements, etc. to make sure I had it dialed in exactly right. It failed miserably. The B&W is incredibly good in all aspects when compared to Weigh Safe I was very surprised. My thought on why I experienced such a noticeable difference is due to the type of rig I have. Being a half ton Suburban vs you using a 3/4 ton, I just think the B&W does a better job compensating for a lighter duty tow vehicle then the Weigh Safe.
Hmm, this is interesting to hear. I’ve had so many 1/2 ton users tell me they absolutely love their Weigh Safe. I have zero doubt something was off with the WS setup. Just based on my experiences and the experiences of literally 100’s of other folks. Regardless, I’m glad the B&W is working well for you.
This series of hitch review videos is great. I have a 37' travel trailer with about 1200 lb. tongue weight, and the ProPride hitch has been phenomenal. I've pulled with it about 6000 miles in the last couple years. It's been worth every penny to me. We're going on a 3500 mile trip with the camper in August, and I'm glad I'll have that hitch for the trip. It makes for an overall less fatiguing experience.
Husky Centerline got me to Glacier NP and back from Ga. Very happy with it. Had 20 mph winds on the way back. No sway. Solid. Was it a fun drive? No. Saw lots of states and gas stations though. Glacier is epic bucket list worthy.
I’ve been towing for decades. The WeighSafe heavy is absolutely the best I have ever used. The adjustable hitch can be separated into 2 pieces to better manage the weight for hook-up. I’ll never use another hitch for which I can’t open my tailgate.
Very new at this. About to transfer from a Newmar Class A pulling a Jeep with a BlueOx to RAM 1500 pulling a Travel Trailer. This video is very informative. However, stil undecided for the best option. The RV dealer wants to sell me a Curt Tru Track but I'm not conviced yet. So much to learn on this.
Nice job Cory! I have towed twice with the WS heavy and it's worked fine. I have found that the truck and trailer MUST be on the same plane or the adjustment will be off. If either is off plane from the other the adjustment will be inaccurate but this is not a failing of the hitch, it's the nature of WD hitches. If you're on uneven ground, wait until you get to even ground before making any major adjustments. Just my 2C. Otherwise, best hitch I've owned.
Really well done summary. I do have to say that I owned a Pro Pride hitch and by far it was the most amazingly engineered hitch I've ever used and sway was non existent. I purchased that hitch used along with a travel trailer and it was already installed. The owner wanted $1200 to include the hitch. Bargain! At the time we had just gotten back into camping and I had an F-150. That hitch probably allowed me to tow a little more than what I should have. That's the problem. I think a lot of people use that hitch to overcompensate for a tow vehicle that isn't up to the task. I think they forget about the limitations of a 1/2 ton truck such as payload, LT tires, smaller brakes, lighter suspensions and frames. In an emergency situation, the Pro Pride hitch does not help you stop any quicker. On windy downhill mountain roads it does not take away the limitations of a light truck. The trailer still pushes hard in turns. A few years later I purchased an F-350 and a fifth wheel toy hauler so I sold the hitch. Of course now we are back to a TT but I don't miss that hitch at all. Hitching up could be a pain and ground clearance was always an issue. There are so many excellent choices that are much less expensive and honestly if you have enough truck you don't need a $4,000 hitch. I really enjoyed this one!
I have run a 1,000 lb Eaz lift hitch for over 20 years on 3 different campers from 18 foot to 32 feet. It is the spring bars with chain link system and has an accessory flat bar friction type anti sway system. These are easy to set up and totally adjustable. They also have good ground clearance. Sway has a lot to do with the way you set up the camper and the tongue weight. I have always felt confident using it and set it up myself. I used to build and install hitches fir people. I used to have a camper service and repair business but never sold them. I ran mobile repair. I went out to where they were setting , even in state parks and campgrounds. I am going to mount this hitch on a brand new 35 foot Apex ultralite this weekend. I have a method and procedure that I have used many ma.y times. I prefer less complicated hitches that are more durable and dependable . I like the round spring bar hitches that just never wear out if you maintain them and set them up correctly. A proper install prevents most all problems and sway on the road. The driver has a lot to do with that.
I had a husky centerline ts and it was a good hitch and now I have a andersen hitch and love it cause of the no bounce and it's lighter than the husky and quieter than the husky.i have a 28ft trailer and the andersen does a fine job.
Thanks for this, it’s been really useful in making my decision. I’m going with an Andersen for my midsize Airstream. Maybe not the best possible sway control, but it’s super easy to use, plus no worries backing up at any angle.
Regarding the Equal-i-zer being noisy. The manual says to put lube, I use the Equal-i-zer brand, on the upper and lower portions of the steel spring bar receiver sockets, not further back where the bars rest on the L brackets. I lube my hitch according to the manual and have very little to no noise. I also do not use those plastic things you mentioned. Thanks for the great work you are doing!
We purchased the middle weight for our 3100rd. Worked great but felt we were pushing it with that hitch. We got luck and found a used heavy weighsafe but we have not towed with it yet. Customer service is beyond excellent!
You’ve put a ton of effort into these hitch reviews and produced a lot of content. Thanks for your honest opinions and experiences. I also appreciate you emphasizing that these are your opinions. My experience with some of these hitches has been different. For me, the Weigh Safe HD angle adjustment mechanism broke, and the hydraulic scale leaked out. Also, the plastic alignment pieces in the head broke. The other problem is their app puts my weight distribution over what my owner’s manual recommends I should do. So, I couldn’t use their app and had to measure the front wheel fenders anyway to set up the hitch (plus when the scale quit working then the app was useless). I’ve heard of many others having these same issues and think the hitch is assembled in USA but all the parts are made overseas which is why they are always backordered. I absolutely love my Equalizer and have had no issues (for less $$ and feels like half the weight when putting it in my receiver). I do clean and regrease the sockets in the head for every vacation (takes 2 mins) and have never had hitch noise. I also have better sway control than I did with Weigh Safe. That was comparing exact same setups - same weight, trailer, and amount of weight distribution. From your videos, it seems you used different trailers and different amounts of weight distribution when testing these hitches which will give different results. I now tow doubles (2 trailers at once) with the Equalizer and would never do it with another hitch (except maybe the Propride, but not for that price and other hassles). Again, I appreciate your honest reviews and this is not meant to argue or bash. Just wanted to give a second opinion.
I just upgraded trucks, so I am waiting on a 2.5” drawbar from Weighsafe to test out the middleweight on a Ram 2500 with factory air suspension. My expectations are high! Shank delivers on Friday. Excellent video as usual.
I have the Husky hitch but since we upgraded to a 2500 we don’t use the round bars anymore. Our trailer is 28’ long with a little over 600lbs hitch Weight and it Doesn’t squats the truck, heck the truck doesn’t even know it back there. Ha Ha. Great video as always!
Been using the Andersen on our 24' behind a Tundra. Love it. Simple, light. I can open and close my tailgate completely. I do agree that with a heavier trailer the sway controlled offered by the hitch head hydraulically pressed into a nylon sleeve may not be enough. Also, with full time RVers or commercial users I could see the nylon wearing out. For casual RVers and shorter trailers I would recommend it to everyone.
Great work! Great video! I have the Equalizer and love it. It was my first hitch, and I couldn't be happier. When she groans, I know she's working. I've added the "plastic pads" and have not noticed any change with performance, and she still makes some noise, just not as much.
Our original was a Reese with the friction bar. The little nut that the tightener screws into started stripping out. We upgraded to an Anderson WD hitch. That was like night and day difference. We still had a little truck suck that starts with the tow vehicle being push away and then pulled towards the passing semi. We are upgrading to the ProPride 3P. The sway elimination was the main attraction. In my calculations, I could either get a bigger tow vehicle or get a different hitch knowing we'd probably end up upgrading to the ProPride eventually. Of those options, going to the ProPride was actually the cheaper option.
Thanks for the list, well done. Totally agree on the B & W, plastic just won’t last as long as metal so the jury is out for now as they’re too new, but I want to like them. Weigh safe seems to be the best all around. Cheers
Just found your channel and your review of the weight distribution hitches. We have a 10K lb Equalizer hitch we bought for our previous trailer in 2015. We now use it for our 2019 Lance. With the Lance Trailer setup, location of trailer chains and attachment points, you can actually have the hitch head cut the trailer chains when turning tight. You can find youtube videos of this, also with fixes too. Our Equalizer hitchhead with our Lance was damaging (flatening the trailer chain) our trailer safety chains so we had make modifications which you can also find to prevent this from happening. These modifications do work. Equalizer Mfg was contacted, and they were not much help, and blamed the trailer manufactuer for poor design. There was also no safety notice in their instructions to watch for this problem. I will say with the Equalizer Hitch, we have not had any sway issues with the plastic bar attachments you mentioned for the sway bars. These do help keeping down the squeaking noise. This issue was not mentioned, so thought I would add for others to be aware of. Thanks for your channel.
AWESOME ! Thanks for your video, I'm a future TT owner, moving over from a Class C. As a Tractor trailer driver, safety and ease of towing is everything to me. You saved me days of research as I am learning now about all the different hitch set ups. I'm now a new subscriber to your channel, Well done!
Love this series! I'd also add that the drop bar on the Weigh safe heavy can also be upgraded to a 2 1/2 inch without swapping out the whole hitch. I ran into this shortly after I bought it that I traded up for a new F350 with a class 5 hitch. For under $200 I just ordered a drop bar and went from a 2" 1500/15k lb to a 2 1/2" 2200/20k lb capacity. That's definitely worth putting on the weight-safe Pro column. I do wish they sold a 3" though just to reduce the slop. Oh, and I've already split the rubber boot under the weight-safe from not being careful enough when setting it down, that's one for the cons.
Thank you so much for you effort. This is hands down the best review of hitches on the web. I ordered a B&W this week. Current hitch is a Hensley its a great hitch but what a pain in the but to hook up. So we will see this weekend after the install. Thanks for the review.
I have an Equalizer. I tow a 30' travel trailer with a 4700# dry weight. I'm not sure what it typically weighs, but I've towed it with all 3 tanks mostly full. I've been in fairly strong winds. I've been up and down mountains. It has been great for me. I drive a Tundra. I have not used the other hitches. I can open my tailgate, but only because I turned my power tongue jack 90 degrees.
I'll ditto the others in saying thanks for doing all of this hitch testing. I have a 38' Reflection Travel trailer, was running the blu-ox tru tow and had a lot of sway and porpoising. I took your recommendation and bought the weigh safe heavy and it's make a BIG difference for me, especially in sway reduction - like you, its a game changer for me and makes towing my trailer much less stressful. Thanks!
Thanks again for your hard work. We are about to buy our first real trailer and although I don't know which weight distribution hitch I will get , i can now make an informed decision. Keep on keeping on.
Great video sir. I just received the B&W yesterday. What a build wow. I really wanted the weigh safe but the draw back for me was #1 when I could get it. #2 they don't recommend backing up with it. And #3 dealing with the bars going from one side to the other when hooking up and disconnecting. On my truck the hitch ball is 33" off the ground and climbing over it would be risky for my age, thus walking around the truck 3 to 4 times each use got a bit old. Call me lazy LOL. Anyway I really appreciate your take on all of the hitches and sharing your experiences with them.
This video came out at the perfect time for me. I’m going from a 35 foot fifth wheel to a 28 ft travel trailer. I love B&W Companion hitch for fifth wheels but I didn’t want to be an early user of their new WDH. Weight Safe Heavyweight works for me. I just hope they get off backorder soon. Thanks for all the work you put into the comparison.
First off, well done!Understanding there is a lot of variables in truck/trailer combinations, it is difficult to know what your experience will be with these hitches unless you try them. Thank you for sharing yours. As a BlueOx Sway Pro owner I've been looking for a better option but I'm pretty sure my wife would have me locked up if I tried to do what you have done! Your ratings consider factors that are also important to me (performance, quality, ease of install/setup, cost) but there was one factor that I didn’t see mentioned that is important to me. Backing up or tight turns without disengaging the sway/WDH system. For several hitch options you have included, this is not the case. We have a half ton truck and 25-foot trailer and we enjoy boondocking on occasion. Getting out of the truck to disengage is not only inconvenient, it is sometimes not possible. This presumably wasn't a deal breaker for you in your evaluation but I'm curious what your experience has been with these hitches in this regard. Thanks again.
Great question. I always seem to forget something in these hitch videos. Haha. None of the hitches in this video require disengagement when backing up under normal circumstances. A few caveats here. If the Husky has the sway control attachment it would need to be disengaged (mine did not). Weigh Safe suggests disengagement after 60 degrees but I’ve never had an issue (a true 60 backing angle is pretty sharp). I’m not sure 90 degrees is smart with any of them. Appreciate you watching!
I have been using a Husky round bar hitch for last twelve years. It is very sturdy and I have not had a single issue with it. Does exactly what I needed it to do. That said, I do have a smaller 22' trailer, 4000 lbs.
I'll say this about the Andersen. If you have a 3/4 ton you'll have no problem towing over 30' with one. Ours is 31' and 9000#, it handles my trailer with zero issues. They're stupid simple to hook up, light weight and virtually noise free. As for the consumables. The spring bushings have lasted me going on 2 years now with no signs of wear. Thousands of miles. They're like $35 a piece on Andersen's site. I was lucky and unlucky at the same time. When I received my Andersen it was missing the large washers. Andersen sent me an extra set of bushings instead, told me to keep them and sent me the washers as well. KUDOS to their customer service. They were FAST to make it right. The friction cone I could probably stand to replace about now, but at $13, who cares. It takes 10 minutes to replace. Andersen isn't for everyone. Obviously. But if you can get away with using one, they're kind of hard to beat. Coming from someone that had a Curt Eazy-Lift, Equalizer 4P and then a ProPride. If I didn't like the Andersen so much I would 100% be buying a Weigh Safe.
The Anderson works very good for my setup. I tow with an 2018 Toyota Tundra Limited Crewmax 4wd with the TRD Off-road Package. My trailer is a 2021 Transcend Explor 261BH that’s 31ft in length.
Another vote for the Anderson. 33 foot trailer behind a SuperDuty. No sway, and that’s going over major mountain ranges and wide open flats. Never a white knuckle moment. The 2 minute set up each time we hook up is a major plus! Also I like that we can still drop our tailgate, and backing up while connected is no issue.
Ram 2500 Cummins pulling a 37' 10k trailer all over the mountains out west with an Andersen WD hitch -- zero issues for three years. Crazy winds on I-40 along AZ/NM border, still steady. No signs of needing replacement parts yet, but like that is easily (and inexpensively) done. Would only consider the Weigh Safe if I ever needed a new hitch. But very happy with Andersen all-around. Great that you were able to try them all out & share your honest opinions.
Thanks for all these videos on hitches and other camping-related things! B&W has been great to me, I gashed the bar on my tongue jack and they are sending me a new bar to install myself. I also questioned WS and they were pretty good about getting back to me. What caused me to go with B&W was 1- I liked the idea of quicker hitching, my Husky was a pain to get set up. 2- They work with underslung couplers and WS says their will not work with underslung. I know people have done it but I was worried what would happen if I ended up having issues setting it up and such. Really appreciate it and looking forward to more videos!
Glad to see this. I’ve actually been using Weigh Safe, but my new Jayco is underslung, something the Weigh Safe doesn’t support. Unfortunately the Weigh Safe has broken the plastic clips and a retention screw on the bottom, so I’m replacing it with the Underslung B&W. Hate these new underslung couplers.
The single best source for travel trailer hitches! Thank you for all the work and info! I'm running an E4 but bought before the vids. They say to never use grease on the bars and that the pads don't change the friction. I use the pads. I love the simplicity of the setup but it bothers me they don't include the pads and grease for the head. They also sell better bar pins separately. All that should be in the kit. Imo that would make it easier to recommend. My next hitch will be that weigh safe heavy. For the money it looks worth the upgrade. Keep up the great work!
I think after watching this video I might be leaning towards the Anderson. Have an 18 ft Rpod 3000lbs dry and pulling with a Ford F150. Looking to get control over wind caused sway and sway when the big trucks pass on the highway. Currently just using a sway control arm on one side.
This is very helpful! 🙌 I have a 32' tongue to bumper travel trailer. The Pro Series WDH that came with it has not been good enough to manage sway or distribute weight on my Expedition, which was swapped for a Navigator L. This helps me, weigh 😂, my options!
I appreciate the fact that you spend the time and effort testing different hitches... Because that's an important thing for consumers that are looking to get an RV and it's peace of mind knowing hey bought the best Hitch For their travel traile.... And you know as well as I do. There's a lot of new people out that have never tow anything in their lives and this is very important for someone that has no experience... I'm from and I myself started out running FEMA 57 trailers back in 07 and then upgraded to a Class A CDL and ran hot shots loads... Like I said before I'm up in the air between Shocker hitch HD with weigh distribution and two friction sway bars or Or buying safeway heavyweighr.. I just wish shocker hitch will get off their ass and send you their HD hitch with sway control and you could compare it against safe weight..✌️
Your reviews are the #1 reason I bought WS. Purchased the MW - still adjusting some - and someone suggested it might be better to back a little then pull forward to set the ball - rather than bouncing on hte bumper;) Would love to see a step by step install video and I am sure someone will add one. I agree the tailgate is con, and so is the lack of the lock on head assembly like the big brother. The way I understood it, WS did say that the WD hitches are assembled in Utah but they are made in China, and they are hoping to change that in the future; their stainless steel products are made in the USA.
My Anderson unit does a great job with my Rockwood 2506 witch can be nose heavy. I do cheat and use air bags. Does a great job across the windy Mojave Desert.
Appreciate your time in putting this review together. I have a 24’ 14k equipment trailer with 4x8” I beam frame. Andersen is the only manufacturer that indicated the frame brackets could be used (with longer bolts). In your experience/opinion would that WDH handle the load? Appreciate any comments or thoughts. Thanks
I also wanted to say thanks for doing these videos. We went for the weigh safe Tru tow for our first trailer, a 34 foot jayco, largely due to your testing videos. It rides really nice and their app and instructions made it so easy for us. We are very happy with it and highly recommend it to others as well. Their customer support is wonderful as well, even before we bought the hitch and were asking a ton of questions. Thanks for the discount code too😊 we made use of it. Appreciate your channel!
Enjoy your videos! I'm purchasing a Rockwood 2109s that is 22'5" and 5,500 lbs loaded. Was looking at the Anderson as I want to keep tongue weight as low as possible and looking for one that is easy to carry, attach / detach. I saw your cons, based on the size of this trailer would you think it will be a good choice? Tow veh is a 20118 Sequoia. Thanks for your time!
Brother, A wonderful & massive review! Thank you for your amazing studies! I'd appreciate your thoughts on my below situation. YESTERDAY, we picked up our new Grand Design 22MLE! 😊 My Richmond, VA RV dealer installed the new WeighSafe MiddleWeight. 1st a super POSITIVE: Going over dips and bridge bumps were amazing, damping out bounce immediately with no multiple bouncing. 😊 My WORRY 😮 was my RAM 1500 sits LOW in the rear, BUT the tech (1st time a WS install for him) showed me the App and said all was all correct (Wish I could show you the photo) and it seemed OK, but the truck was far from level. So I took delivery. Once I got on I-95, the steering felt very light. Then the very 1st semi truck that passed me was a bit concerning as I felt the suck, and with the light steering, created stress for me every semi that passed. I kept speed to 65 even though most traffic was 75. Since I'm also in the very middle of a move, I didn't turn around and bring it back. Do you have any thoughts? Thx Again. I know I'll love this once I get it all dialed in. Cheers, Eric
The first thing I would do is download the app and measure everything yourself. You’ll need to know your weights. It is likely he put your advertised hitch weight into the app and didn’t pay attention to the scale. Maybe not. I simply do not trust dealerships when it comes to setting these hitches up. 95% have zero clue how to do it properly.
@WanderingWeekends sorry for the Late Update my brother! I finally got to performing the installation check with the install Book and the App for my RAM 1500. Yes indeed, the shop really had this thing messed up. They had the Distributed weight wrong by ~600 lbs !!! The App said my "Distributed Weight" "SafeZone" target is 1700 lbs, he had it at 1100 lbs. After adjusting she tracked amazing to/from FL with only the slightest HINT of semi truck "suck" while I drive at 65mph and they blow by at 75+ mph. Basically no sway or porpoising over dips & bridgetransitions. I don't really notice wind load much at all. I'm Loving this hitch! THANKS Cheers, Eric
A true fall from grace with ProPride falling from number one to number six! I recently just bought one and your cons are definitely valid. Once the thing is hooked up though, it excels at what they designed it to do. Anyone using one really does need a can of dry lube to get that stinger mounted in there properly. I did almost get the WeighSafe hitch but since I was driving a long distance, I wanted to get the best for sway control. Super high winds in California proved my choice valid there.
Thanks for all the hard work and sharing your opinion. Just bought a trailer from a private party. He threw in an Equalizer 4 point as a sweetener. Checked your review and it helped close the deal. Will upgrade once I have recovered from the recent cash outflow but knew trailer was coming with a decent weight distribution hitch. Go Dawgs!
Great video! You mentioned the clearance issues with the Equalizer. I have the Curt Trutrack 4p and so far after getting it set up correctly it has preformed well, but it also has clearance issues as well. I have noticed that the head if turned to sharp will hit the tongue of my Keystone Bullet. I have been looking at new hitches for the past few weeks and have pretty much decided on the WS middle weight. Thanks for the great info on all of these hitches.
Fascinating video. The first and only weight distribution hitch I have used is a Blue Oyx with an Airstream 23' flying cloud (FBT) with a 3" lift and an F150 Powerboost with 1600 lbs of payload capacity. This AS trailer has a low tongue weight (435 lbs +/- ) unloaded - 5000lb trailer weight (calculated from weigh scale measurements and checked with a Sherline scale on the tongue weight). I had to load up the airstream on the front to get 12% tongue weight (fill the fresh water tank, etc). At 12% + tongue weight, this towed perfectly with the Blue Oyx (high winds, passing semi-trucks, emergency maneuvers - had a scammer pull in front of me and stop w/o brake lights on a divided highway - I went around them on a very rough, hard shoulder and no handling issues). If the tongue weight dipped below 10%, it was sickeningly bad with the Blue Oyx!. I knew tongue weight was important, but a 2% change made a huge performance difference. Now I wonder, would it have be as critical with a different WDH?
Have used a number of hitches over the years... Did really like the EZ Lift with the "brake pad" material. But now I have an Andersen and I LOVE it... Granted, I'm towing under 24', but quiet, ease of hitch up / disconnect and good sway control and GREAT porpoise reduction. Won't use anything else. One you left off, in the same vein as the ProPride is the Hensely and they begin cheaper than the ProPride and right now have a big sale going on... Just sayin'. Great info and overview. Thanks!
Just ordered the WeighSafe mid weight and used your code! I didn’t opt for the locks or pins but they through all 3 in the box keyed alike. I use the cheap Eaz lift chain system and will be installing the weigh safe this weekend can’t wait!
Interesting ranking. Also interesting comments that Propride is a "Band-Aid" for an "inadequate" truck. I'd say it's a piece of high performing equipment that makes towing safer regardless of tow vehicle. As I sit in my campground in Maine after driving from Georgia with my F150, $4000 is a small price to pay for high performance. The 2400BH is as large as I'd tow with a F150, and the Propride locks it down like a champ. Safe travels to all.
Please notice I didn’t use absolutes in my comment and I also compliment the ProPride as an excellent hitch. Here is the catch… the top hitches in this video are ALSO high performing pieces of equipment… and they cost 75% less than the PP. If one believes the PP is their only high performing option I believe they’re mistaken.
I am curious of experiences with Bullerproof Hitches. I have received one with the trailer I bought, and one of the sway control ball tabs is bent...likely from a past jacknife episode. But genuinely appreciate your content and this list was a great review also of what to look for in any hitch. Tally up the pros and cons and you know a number of key items to eval on your particular hitch setup. You won a new subscriber today!
I appreciate you subscribing! No experience with any of the Bulletproof stuff but I hear it’s pretty good. If I ever snag one I’ll definitely make sure to share my thoughts.
I want to say this... If you properly load your trailer and have enough truck to handle it you shouldn't get much sway at all. My issue with the propride is that I often wondering if its masks a trailer that is not loaded correctly. I use a Equalizer E4 hitch and have no reason to shell out $4000 for a hitch when I know if I load my trailer right it won't sway much at all. Also I would like to know what makes that hitch worth almost $4000 because as an engineer myself it sure doesn't look like $4000 to me.
My travel trailer is 31' with a GVW of 11,500 have been using the Anderson unit for 3 years now and am very satisfied with it. Most of the time I am unable to access my tailgate but I have learned how to have better success with that if needed. My Truck is a F-350 thanks for your reviews.
@@carlpetersen5983 With my old bar system I could never open the tailgate all the way. With the Anderson I am able to sometimes depending on how I have my rig parked and the angle my truck is to the trailer. The things I might need I usually have within reach of just opening the topper door so it has not been a problem Yet. I really like the Anderson because of not needing to disconnect when making sharp back up maneuvers to get into a camping space, They are easy to hook up and take off. Lightweight easy to stow and it works great on the highway.
Just ordered the Weight Safe Middleweight and really appreciate the discount code. I’ve never towed travel trailers and I have enjoyed your reviews. I’m going from a Solitude 310 to a 28 foot Airstream and this is one less thing to worry about. We live in Missouri now but I went to UGA back in the 70s.
I've had both a Sway pro and an Andersen hitch, and I completely agree with your assessment. They both sucked. Bought a Weigh Safe based on your original hitch video. It's hands down way better. Highly recommend. Thanks for doing these hitch battle videos!
I bought a fish house and planned on using a pole tongue adapter but because of the hydraulic steel arms, I need to put the adapter a little farther rearwards. The arms on the equalizer 4 are too short. Is there another one that has arms about 4-5 inches longer?
I got the WS Heavy and literally threw my Reese system in the trash last fall! What a night and day difference! It's a very well-built system that has almost entirely removed sway for me.
One con for some folks with the heavyweight from weigh safe which I learned after purchase do to my oversight but they also don’t make the info easy to find. The hitch is NOT compatible with underslung trailer frames, most commonly found on Jayco trailers.
I wonder what is different with a Ford tailgate that you can’t use your tailgate. I have a Blue Ox Track Pro that the dealer sold me with my trailer. It seems to do okay but noisy and I can use the tailgate on my RAM. Looking to upgrade to a 2800BH and am considering changing hitches. Your videos will surely help me decide on the best value.
After looking at the B&W geometry the pressures would vary if the angle between the truck and trailer changes would have an effect on pressure. It will be my next WDH.
The Andersen got noisy for me when it got wet. After driving in rain, the friction material made a loud squeaking noise. Was annoying when pulling into campgrounds. I currently have a Hensley and love it.
Thanks for all your videos! Question regarding the heavyweight vs middleweight. I’d really like to be able to use my tailgate and don’t mind spending the extra money, but I’m concerned that the 10k lb GVWR of my trailer will make the heavyweight “overkill” for my setup. Any thoughts or info on that? Thanks again!
I appreciate you watching! Heavyweight should be fine. Both hitches will use the same distributed tongue weight for your specific trailer so it won’t matter. Heavy allows for more capacity, middle allows for saving money and it’s a little lighter to handle.
This was an awesome series. I have an Andersen hitch and picked it because it was light weight and easy to use. When using it with an F150 and a 30ft trailer there were some slight sway control issues. However now that I upgraded to an F250 the hitch has worked amazing. I have considered changing a couple of times but keep sticking with the Andersen because of how easy to use it is and how light weight all the components are. But that being said I could see how this wouldn’t be ideal for a heavy long trailer. But I like it a lot.
Great video for sure. I did buy the weigh-safe before watching this video so I feel I chose wisely. You might mention in future vids that the weigh-safe is the only hitch with an actual scale on it.
I appreciate all of the work that you put into this over the years. My only comment is in regard to the Blue Ox Sway Pro. I’m wondering if you perhaps got a defective or incorrectly sized unit. I have been towing travel trailers for about 20 years now. Through that time, I have used the round bar style, Reese cam style, the Equalizer, and most recently the Sway Pro. I would rank it on par with the Equalizer. It performs very well for me. I have a 34’ Jayco, towed with a RAM 2500. It works flawlessly. I initially went with the recommended size bars, but they were too light. During that time I also experienced the porpoising problem. But once they exchanged for the larger bars, it was golden. Been using that system for a few years now and have no desire to change.
You’re kinda making my point. The hitch has design flaws. One major flaw is bar recommendations. I’ve heard from several folks asking me to go with heavier bars. The bars I used in testing were already slightly above my loaded weights. Blue Ox themselves worked with me to make sure I had the correct setup. If one is expected to guess whether they need bars that aren’t designed for their setup that is a problem that needs to be addressed.
Good review. I've been very happy with our 4P Equalizer for use on a 1200# tongue weight, 9K unloaded weight, 37' GD TT. It doesn't get rid of all the sway, but is really comfortable to drive across the lower 48. Hardly can tell my trailer is back there sometimes. Yup, it's noisy, doesn't bother me though. I bought the shank extension from Equalizer to use the tailgate on my F250 but could have just turned the power jack head sideways for the clearance. Would love to check out the WS Heavy, just can't justify getting rid of a good hitch for another with the cost of these things. Thanks again.
I am pulling a 26' 6800lb travel trailer with an f-150. Truck seems to pull and stop well, but I know it is barely enough truck to do it all without some potential sway or bounce. Knowing that, what hitch would you recommend to compensate for this without buying a new one. Would you still do weigh safe? I have a friction hitch already.
Hi there. I’m new to all of this but I have a pretty light RV (2940 lb dry weight) and am pulling with a FJ cruiser (pulls 5000lbs)…took it on 800 mile trip on the ball no real issues. We encountered some sway when trucks passed us but nothing too crazy. I’d like to invest in a weight distro hitch because although the trailer is light, it’s stretches 21’. I don’t want to run the bill on overkill. What would you recommend? Thanks!
I tow a GD 2800BH with the Andersen. TV is a Nissan NV3500 with roadmaster active suspension installed. It has done well for me for the most part. It performed better once I drilled holes in the frame for the bracket set screw. They would migrate forward before. I do experience the truck suck, but not all the time. Have not had any serious sway issues. I'm sure others are better but I have nothing to compare too.
Is there a way to use they Weigh Safe hitch or any distribution hitch with just a single straight tounge bar? I wish I could post a picture. My snowmobile trailer didn't have the tounge V it's just a straight line - - - - - - - [8] it's a 2020 Mission trailer mes101x14 snowmobile trailer
Great video. Definitely like the honest/seat of the pants reviews. I haven't seen this addressed in any of the reviews.... How do decided/pick the correct size of the WDH for the size of the trailer? Do you get one that is correct using the GVWR of the trailer OR by the tongue weight? Case in point.... My trailers GVWR is 9,995. Trailer weights 9,100 loaded. The tongue weight is 1,303. Equalizer 4 P has 1,000/10,000 , 1,200/12,000 and 1,400/14,000. Neither of them is an exact fit. So.... Go by tongue weight or GVWR? I'm sure that matching the correct WDH with the trailer goes a long ways in having a safe/enjoyable towing experience. Thanks!
Thank you for this video. My new (used) trailer came with a round bar/chain hitch and no sway control; it wasn't working for me. I just pulled the trigger on the TR3 and your series of videos on it were a big influence.
Well, after towing 3 times with my Curt Tru Track, I just ordered a Weigh Safe to see if i can improve my towing experience. I am within the boundaries of my truck, however most would say I'm under trucked and I dont know if my truck is just going to be stuck experiencing some sway and truck suck or if the Curt just isnt up to the task of handling my combination. I'm really hoping the Weigh Safe is going to improve that experience....
Went from the WS heavyweight for a 33ft tt to the WS middleweight for a new 20ft Ember (I can open the tailgate 😎). Love them both. The middleweight is the real deal. You're a great resource.
Thanks for all the work you've done to offer such thorough and detailed information as this! I'm looking at buying a GD Imagine AIM 15RB in the near future and, given the weight, I'm wondering if I might even need a weight distribution hitch. I am more concerned about sway control and was wondering what your thoughts/recommendations are for hitch/sway bar/WD hitch for this size trailer? Thanks!
What would you say is the best weight distribution hitch for reversing with sharp turns? Aka: jackknifing. Enclosed trailer at around 6-8000lbs. Towed by 1500 crew cab. Need to be able to back up into tight driveways that require sharp turns. Thanks!
I know that it’s older technology, but have you ever tried the Reese Dual-Cam sway control. I’ve been using it for 19 years and find it very effective and easy to use once set up. Even the setup is pretty easy. Thanks!! Garry
Maybe because I've experienced no other WDH, or because I have a lighter, shorter camper (Rockwood ROO 233S), my Husky has worked just fine for me. I of course use the separate sway control thing and I do agree the bars are messy and I do need to make sure the camper is loaded the same so I use the same chain link. I am sure I would be looking at a different type when (IF) we upgrade campers.
I know that you probably didn't tow something like this but, I've got a Winnebago 170S, single axle 4200lbs gvwr. Would your list be the same for a smaller trailer like mine? Thanks
Thanks, I was kicking myself while driving for not including tow vehicle info. Wasn't driving when asked the question 🙂 2014 Ram 1500 5ft7in bed. Thanks for the info.
I know your are not The WS tech, but you are generally recognize as The Tester of the most WDH. Yesterday we hitched up, generally have to adjust the hitch a little. Hitch weight was 700#, generally 500-900" and use 1100#. This time it was 700#, connected the bars, and it is generally 1900-2400#, and our target is 2150-2300. This time the weight was 1400-1525". We loosened the Clamp Bolt and tried to adjust the weight by turning the Lead Screw - no luck - stayed the same. Took the hitch off the ball - weight was at zero; placed it back on the ball, 700#, hooked the bars, 1400-1525". Pulled the trailer for half a block - no change; turned and turned the Lead Screw with the Hand Crank (which is nice to have but a pain to use in this way - any other suggestions); we have never had a similar experience - but there is obviously and issue with out hitch. Pulled the trailer for about a mile - same result; went through the whole process again - same result. Pulled 77 miles - towed OK for the most part - some rough roads made it hard to tell sometimes. Any clue what could be the problem? Again, I know you are not the WS Tech and I will reach out to them. THANKS!
I hear that the Husky round bar is last, I would love to see on on the Husky TS Centerline. I have had one on my old one and recently upgraded the bars for a bigger camper. Is the hitch great, who knows! But I am impressed with their customer service -- I sent them photos and measurements and we went back and forth via email today while I adjusted it.
I had the Equalizer on a 34ft Trailer and absolutely hated it. Every time a Semi or Box truck passed it was nerve racking. Maybe on a 25' trailer but nothing bigger. 15 Years and two trailers ago I Upgraded to a Hensley Hitch and wouldn't own anything else. I was a little skeptical about it and the price but I assure you It's worth every penny. Safety and easy towing is unmatched.
Weigh Safe has shifted their discount to 10%... while unfortunate it still saves you around $100!!
@@JDHarprtoo much tongue weight for the middle weight.
Would you recommend Anderson 3350 for 2010 Tacoma 4x4 pulling geopro 20bhs .... 21' trailer gvw 4600 lbs or something else
Do you have the code
I am using the Blue Ox Sway Pro. I tow a 34 ft 9700 lb travel trailer and love it. I get no sway. I do believe if it is not connected correctly, you may get sway. I also do not get any porpoise movement. I have been towing for over 20 years
I love my sway pro too. Works great on my 5000 lb trailer.
Thanks! I'm ordering the Way Safe because of your video. Also a new subscriber.
Grateful!
I hope it serves you well.
Weight safe is doing EVERYTHING right. Love the company and all its products
What are you pulling the trailer with?
Appreciate you watching and thank you for sharing that. Many heads are better than one.
Great to hear!
These comments are always welcome! Respectful and informative!
I just upgraded trucks, so I am waiting on a 2.5” drawbar from Weighsafe to test out the middleweight on a Ram 2500 with factory air suspension. My expectations are high! Shank delivers on Friday. Excellent video as usual.
I hope you love it. Others seems to.
Cheers
Love our Weigh Safe Heavyweight! Your videos were the primary reason I started looking into it and boy am I glad I did. It's been amazing!
Welcome!! Glad you are here.
Keep us updated!!
Yes, the tongue jack trick works for most of these. Safe travels. I appreciate you watching.
Thanks!
I’m glad it’s improved your experience!
I love they’re a small company but I believe that makes it tough for them to keep up sometimes.
Don’t fix it if it ain’t broke!
The Andersen definitely surprised me!
Pro Pride is from Anderson's 2nd company. Minor improvements. Ram 2500 and 10k pound TT tows great.
Thanks so much for the great reviews. We just ordered a Weigh-Safe hitch for our upcoming TT purchase. Saved $$ with the code, too!
Awesome! Gas money!!!
I have a Reese with bars and chains….works fine ! 29ft trailer. Half ton truck, have not used sway option ! Thanks
My man - thanks so much for doing this - about to buy a 35' bumper pull toy hauler (8-13k lbs) So this will help
Glad it was helpful!!
Both are very good! Thanks for the compliment.
I have a 32' tongue to bumper travel trailer. The Pro Series WDH that came with it has not been good enough to manage sway or distribute weight on my Expedition, which was swapped for a Navigator L. This helps me, weigh 😂, my options!
You can use your tailgate with Andersen depending on how you have to setup the ball.
I’d love to!!
Excellent video. Thank you for all the time and effort; very much appreciated by the RV community
Its my pleasure! The first video helped so many. Hopefully this one will too.
My Anderson unit does a great job with my Rockwood 2506 witch can be nose heavy. I do cheat and use air bags. Does a great job across the windy Mojave Desert.
I just got my first travel trailer. I tow it with a F150. I purchased a Husky round bar WDH, primarily on price. I wish I had seen this video first.
Thanks
Based on comments I’ve received regarding heavier trailers I would pass on the Andersen in your situation. I wish I had a solution to fit your needs!!
Glad to hear!!!
Brother,
A wonderful & massive review!
My WORRY 😮 was my RAM 1500 sits LOW in the rear, BUT the tech (1st time a WS install for him) showed me the App and said all was all correct (Wish I could show you the photo) and it seemed OK, but the truck was far from level.
@@WanderingWeekends thank you. I will! 😎
THANKS
Cheers,
Eric
A true fall from grace with ProPride falling from number one to number six! I recently just bought one and your cons are definitely valid. Once the thing is hooked up though, it excels at what they designed it to do. Anyone using one really does need a can of dry lube to get that stinger mounted in there properly. I did almost get the WeighSafe hitch but since I was driving a long distance, I wanted to get the best for sway control. Super high winds in California proved my choice valid there.
I just wish it was $2k... but its not
@@WanderingWeekends you've lost all credibility in my book. But HEY you don't need to worry about it because I'm no longer a subscriber.
Sounds good! I don’t want anyone here that doesn’t want to be here. ✌️
Go Dawgs!
@@stevensims8922Didn’t pick your favorite, so you’re taking your ball and going home?
Great video! You mentioned the clearance issues with the Equalizer. I have the Curt Trutrack 4p and so far after getting it set up correctly it has preformed well, but it also has clearance issues as well. I have noticed that the head if turned to sharp will hit the tongue of my Keystone Bullet. I have been looking at new hitches for the past few weeks and have pretty much decided on the WS middle weight. Thanks for the great info on all of these hitches.
Interesting. This is the first time hearing of this issue. I’ll keep my ears out.
Thanks!
Thanks for sharing!
Just ordered the WeighSafe mid weight and used your code! I didn’t opt for the locks or pins but they through all 3 in the box keyed alike. I use the cheap Eaz lift chain system and will be installing the weigh safe this weekend can’t wait!
Nice! Take the money you saved and fill up your gas tank!
My Truck is a F-350 thanks for your reviews.
just bought a Anderson why cant you drop your tailgate?
@@carlpetersen5983 With my old bar system I could never open the tailgate all the way. With the Anderson I am able to sometimes depending on how I have my rig parked and the angle my truck is to the trailer. The things I might need I usually have within reach of just opening the topper door so it has not been a problem Yet. I really like the Anderson because of not needing to disconnect when making sharp back up maneuvers to get into a camping space, They are easy to hook up and take off. Lightweight easy to stow and it works great on the highway.
Thank you so much for your honest opinions, and for the work and effort you've put in to provide this very helpful info!
You are very welcome!!
Go Dawgs!!!
I've had both a Sway pro and an Andersen hitch, and I completely agree with your assessment. They both sucked. Bought a Weigh Safe based on your original hitch video. It's hands down way better. Highly recommend. Thanks for doing these hitch battle videos!
Selling my Anderson. Can’t get rid of sway using 1/2 ton with 25ft microlite. Called company. They made a suggestion that didn’t help.
Better check your bracket bolts. One of mine broke today and the other 3 are bent to the point that they will break soon.
One con for some folks with the heavyweight from weigh safe which I learned after purchase do to my oversight but they also don’t make the info easy to find. The hitch is NOT compatible with underslung trailer frames, most commonly found on Jayco trailers.
Corey, just pre-ordered the heavyweight but saw this comment. We own a Jayco and now concerned with compatibility. Any thoughts???
@@markjustice5600 in my experience, we used the hitch several times with the Jayco. Just never felt correct. No matter what adjustments I made.
Anderson WDH works perfect on my 36 ft. Trailer, even in 35-40 MPH crosswinds through the Continental Divide in Wyoming !!!
It worked pretty darn good for me too! Safe travels.
Thank you so much for great information and saving us money and time to find a great hitch.
Weigh Safe is your best bet. That would be my choice.
That’s a great question that I do not have an answer for. I understand what you are asking but I have not seen such a device.
Thanks!
In your situation I’d go by TW.
Thank you for this video. My new (used) trailer came with a round bar/chain hitch and no sway control; it wasn't working for me. I just pulled the trigger on the TR3 and your series of videos on it were a big influence.
Have you tried the gen y hitch if so did you like it
I have not gotten a anti-sway hitch yet. I enjoy this
We have a single axle camper. I did add shocks, That helped ALot!!
Nice!!
Are you saying you can't use the tailgate with the heavyweight?
Thanks for all the work you've done to offer such thorough and detailed information as this!
I'm looking at buying a GD Imagine AIM 15RB in the near future and, given the weight, I'm wondering if I might even need a weight distribution hitch. I am more concerned about sway control and was wondering what your thoughts/recommendations are for hitch/sway bar/WD hitch for this size trailer? Thanks!
Much of that depends heavily on the tow vehicle. I used one on the AIM we had for awhile and I tow with a 3/4 ton. Haha.
Thanks!! Garry
Have you considered testing/reviewing the Air Safe Receiver hitch?
Maybe because I've experienced no other WDH, or because I have a lighter, shorter camper (Rockwood ROO 233S), my Husky has worked just fine for me. I of course use the separate sway control thing and I do agree the bars are messy and I do need to make sure the camper is loaded the same so I use the same chain link. I am sure I would be looking at a different type when (IF) we upgrade campers.
I know that you probably didn't tow something like this but, I've got a Winnebago 170S, single axle 4200lbs gvwr. Would your list be the same for a smaller trailer like mine?
Thanks
Depends on the tow vehicle. In my case I might lean towards the Andersen or Weigh Safe middleweight with the light bars.
I was a little skeptical about it and the price but I assure you
It's worth every penny. Safety and easy towing is unmatched.
I've got that lantern on the left. Was my dad's bought in the 60's. Works like a champ
