- Join me again back at the river as I sift for ancient treasures and try to find the stories of people living thousands of years ago. Flint Ridge, bird point, gorget, banner stone, slate, Ohio River. Arrowheads and artifacts
Love that I discovered your channel. You do a great job of keeping it interesting. Really appreciate your work and the historical information.
Thanks Mike! I have a lot of fun with the videos, just wish I had more time to create more.
Napping my brother. The edgework is called napping i never used to be able to remember that myself when i needed to 😂. Thats napping work👍
Very nice finds my friend bannerstone for sure see you on the next one
Robert Wise Thank you much 👍
I wish I would have asked my grandma and great grandma more questions about my ancestors. Both were full blooded Cherokee Indians but these kinds of topics were not super popular back in the 80s, at least not like they are today.
I wish I had done the same
I live in a river in Michigan. I have found similar stones in the water near the shore, with holes drilled in them. I believe they were used to weight the nets for catching fish. Either gill nets or casting nets.
Most the bet weights we find around here are the flat stones with notches in them
Nice hunt
Thank you Tim!👍
I enjoy your videos MORE than any of others that are available. Graciously,,,THANK YOU brother. Keep explaining well and keep up the awesome work
Much Appreciated Gary👍
What an awesome day you had! The old boys didn't have bed posts to notch so I think they used their gorgets instead! DOH! I agree the banded slate piece is most likely a banner stone although I have seen a few examples of pipes made from banded slate. I've found a number of knapped slate arrowheads and blades over the years here in Virginia, they are typically very crude.
bones&stones 65 Yea, that slate point was very crude. Thank you for watching 👍
I've found some killer slate pieces here in south carolina. They usually just get so worn down you can't see the flake marks.
That bird point was definitely the prize of the day! Killer find!
Indiana Smith Thank you very much, I was happy to get it.👍
The hematite was used as a red paint. Some of pieces you are finding are the throw away part. They used it until too small to hold.
Exactly Brian👍
A broke banner and a broke gorget!! I would dig dig dig! Awesome finds
i walk in circles Yea, very heart breaking that they were broken. Thanks guy👍
Very heart breaking!!
3:27 that point looks like it’s made from kanawha black, it sucks to knapp but if that’s all you had, I’ve seen some nice points made from it.
Yea, they liked that stuff but it’s kinda gritty.
Just found your channel. Love It 👍
Thank You So Much!👍
Going back to one of your other video's where you used big rock to push artifacts up I've always wanted to make /built a portable vibrator to run off gen and attach air compressor as well to push targets thru slurry but I haven't taken the time to do it so if you can go for it because it would work same principle as big stone with less labor and it would be much faster
Might work, give it a try
Enjoyed as always that bird point is killer!! Great other finds,God is good
Thank you Mike👍
👍 Never really pictured gorgets being worn on the waistline but very feasible as to leave the neck area for more decorative stuff. That killer is a g10 man, very nice.
Thanks Todd, it’s one of the nicest I’ve found.
I found a slate point that wasnt knapped traditionally, instead, they used something sharp to shape the point. Just like a chisel removes curls of wood, same concept
That’s the only one I’ve ever found
Plus, I've found an arrow straightener, and it's much smaller hole.
Awesome finds! The one for shaving!? That’s a good one. Lol. Keep the videos coming.
Marlin Thomas Thank you very much.👍
Congrats on all your awesome finds!!!! Good video I enjoyed it very much , very informative. Keep well.
Thank you Norma
I saw a rough chipped slate point one time….I made it myself!
😂
2 cool pieces of slate and awesome points dang Scott great day I have found slate knives usually round but no actual points. The hard work has paid off for you
Mike Graham Thank you very much 👍
that gorget is awesome congrats! you had a great day with the sifter!
dana f. Thank you very much 👍
Killer point! Banded slate is always nice to find.
marley lukie Very nice to find indeed. Thank you 👍
@@cleggsadventures it's not my daughter, its Josh. Somehow she has my phone messed up
Killer hunt Scott. That looks like a ball banner or a Geniculate banner. Be my best guess. Nice gorget hope you find the rest of it. That point looks a lot like a Amos to me was it ground. I know some of those bird points look like them. They look like mini Lost Lakes. Enjoyed to the max.
Sonny Pate Thank you very much. It didn’t seem to have any grinding on the base. And thanks for the info.👍
Awesome finds Scott - keep up on the great work!!
AndiNutt1 Thank you much 👍
The chief smacked the crap out of that guy lol. Great vids love your enthusiasm man.
Stanley Goard Thank you. I bet there was a story to it. Or many stories. Wish I knew.👍
You and me both, I spent lots of time thinking about that
I’m sure people acted the same, just different traditions. I sit and think about what it was like. Had to have been an amazing time to live. The ultimate freedom.👍
I agree!!! Keep up all the good work and continued good luck.
graves have had bannerstones with remains of wood shaft and bone hook in line .they are sure they are atlatl weights.
That’s Ball bannerstones , the winged ones are a mystery
Wow just mind blowing nice finds
Brice Hale Thank you much 👍
Banner no dought
I thought so too.👍
Wow buddy great recoveries!!!! You killed it!!!!! Way to go man! Great video my friend!
George Motz wish I had the whole gorget. I’ve never found one before.
@@cleggsadventures yeah buddy that would have been awesome whole for sure!!! I have never found a whole one but I did find a complete half of one. Not sure if you've seen that or not. I think I've showed you I thg before.. if not I can send ya a pic or show ya next time we see each other. Just watched your last 2 vids last night and wow you are really killing it man!!! Alot of nice pieces..... That 4inch blade by the tree was amazing!!! Is that where you found that big sandy laying out last year as well?
Yea, the first point I ever found there. That big one was 3 inches, got it right by that tree. I don’t think you showed me the gorget, would like to see it.
Nice finds Thanks for posting
Kevin Frederick Thanks for watching.👍
Aww folks!!! Nice finds!
Raymond Nelson lol Thanks man.
Great hunt. The first point is killer! I hope you can find the other part to that forget.
Jeremy Metzger Thanks, I’ll be looking for sure.👍
Excellent.
Ordinary everyday guy Thanks guy 👍
Awesome my brother lot of work but well worth keep it up
elvis real Thank you very much 👍
Awesome finds once again! That broken gorget was awesome!! Love the videos but, please be careful showing where you walk along the shoreline. To easy to identify locations! Don’t want those pirates to take your sites!
Charles Schreiber Thanks guy. Those pirates don’t wanna dig this muck. Too much work
Golf courses I believe are ancient mounds
Scott SUPER nice saves out of the sand!!!!! I have to chime in on this on, the absolute killer point you found looks to me an Amos point, Iv seen several in videos and that one has the best material I have seen. Your buddy down river finds them all the time check it out RC.. The gorget is a killer piece of history!! Hope you find more of that and the banner stone!! That Amos is G10!
Scott Nock It may possibly be. Wasn’t sure on that one. Cousteau is 8 miles north. Thanks for the info 👍
Excellent adventure
Craig Littler Thank you much 👍
Definitely a piece of a bannerstone
I’ve been looking for the other parts, no luck.
Awesome finds brother.
Chiefkirk Outdoors thank you much!👍
Good video any time I find multiple points it’s a good day man . I think that’s a broken bannerstone some may have been used for atl atls but I think they were worn on their body for whatever reason ? The tally marks on the broken gorget may be human kills !! You got a good spot keep on it man 👍
Eddie Lile Thank you much!👍 I wish we knew all the answers to this stuff.
awesome finds bud!
The Mokai Warrior Thank you 👍
How are ya, Cleggs Adventures. it is exceptionally meaningful video. thank. :)
Colorized Enhanced - Silent Movies Thank you much 👍
Nice finds I have finally found a location in the past month after 30 years of looking that i have found a lot of stuff and some stones that i am not sure what they are what do you recommend i do to find out what they might be if anything thanks and the is some killer finds. Your videos have really helped me find a location to search then used the search Technics and it is only 15 mins from my house and I have spent hours driving all over Washington and Morgan county
Donald Ross I would suggest joining a Facebook group and post photos there, people will help identifying
i have a couple made out of slate some are made out of basalt.
Rare in my area, too much flint close by
Maybe a young boy was learning on that slate one
I would say that is quite possible. Everyone had to learn before they got better.👍
Did you notice the gorget had tally marks on the edges and maybe cross hatch marks on the face?
Yes, it had several of both. And the hole was an error. Check it out.
I meant I live near a river in Michigan, it’s a stone bottom river.
They would have definitely tried to complete heads with stone that they knew probably wouldnt work...but might work.
Probably when materials were scarce
@@cleggsadventures hey you replied pretty quick. I've just found your channel. I've been on the hunt after finding what i know now as a flint ridge piece. I don't know what it was exactly, but I had a question, how many arrowheads have you found on the ohio River? Do you have a collection video?
@@alexgard4968 Yes, here’s a video I did since starting the channel. Probably have twice as many broken ones also.

I’m assuming that flint was a valuable commodity, so with that in mind I see you find items (not flint) of poor quality that have been knapped. My thoughts that maybe these were for the novices to practice on before moving on to flint. Just a thought.
You’re probably correct on that, others have said the same.
I think they had a Dollar shaving club they would send a new flint blade every month
Donald Ross Good one👍
I'm saying banner stone!!!
I think so too. Just wish the rest of it would turn up.👍 Thank you for watching.
one more question do you use anything on the artifacts to keep a shine similar to when you rinse them in the water thank
Donald Ross I do not. I know they don’t look as nice dry.
I think if you google Search Results
Web results
Ohio Archaeologist: Volume 33, Number 4 (Fall, 1983) I think you drilled stone looks like the top one on the cover photo
Donald Ross Thanks, I’ll check that out
I lived close to Miami Ohio- the Miami Indians were indigenous here. Anyway, I started looking for arrowhead in XI’s creek! Never found any?? So, but I’ve found so many tools and get this , I found a mothers stone?? Read about it in a book on these things. The stone is not from the area and it was just like the one from the book. I took pics and sent off to Ohio state in one of the department’s on ancient artifacts!! The young assistant said that all the tools are natural??? Bone head. I know from watching and reading that that they are tools. Had one with a drill hole. Just like you have in this video!! It wasn’t a hard stone but sand stone I think. Anyway fyi
You’re always gonna have those that say things are natural. We know what we got 👍
knapped slate pretty cool they used what they had .I got my arm healed to a point that I could drive and had a weird find as well made of a hard lime stone everyone saws it looks like a turtle shell 1in thick about 6in oval all edges knapped .anyone found anything like that???? Also found a crude uniface redish pink flint hand ax a few feet away .would love to share picture
James Auld Sounds like you got on to a good spot.👍
James Auld What’s up James I actually have a triangular shaped artifact its fossilized bone? It’s ground on one side to shape it you can see meat on the underside I worked for local school Corp and we sent it to USI southern IN and its prehistoric plate from some animal probably from glacier ?? Cool stuff good luck 👍
what I found is not a fossil it is riverstone knapped it is not sharp, but does resemble a turtle shell the way it is knapped top bottom and edges all worked.it might have had sharper edges it was in a creek I was wondering anyone had found anything like that.I have pictures I can post
James Auld I got ya I don’t know what that is there are a lot of artifacts that we may never know what it’s purpose was even mass finds such as banners and discoidals my find is a digging tool! Stay safe and be careful man this stuff is addictive 👍
My guess is a scraper or un drilled pendant??
Gillette has definitely came a long way since then lol
Barbara Todd Would have been some rough shaving. lol 👍
Voice at 6:15 ??
No idea
