I got up to Post-Impressionists and was frustrated at not having heard about Rembrandt and the Dutch school. After some searching I found that this, like the preceding, had not made it into the playlist. Enjoying the series immensely.
27:34 - It is a bit unwise to talk about racism here. We are talking about the Ottoman Empire, which was just as detrimental to it's conquered regions as the colonizers. For example in the Balkans and Hungary, during this age of technological development, the population was declining. It left so major lasting consequences that to this day this region has less population than just Germany or France alone.
Agreed, racism would apply to strictly issues of race (which ironically in the painting the figures’ skin color is the same on all). A more appropriate word would be tribalism or ethnic hostility. In regards to the anti-Muslim sentiment is definitely true due to the reasons you just described.
I have lived in the Netherlands for 5 years and seen many of these paintings before and only now do I learn about all their sexual symbolism. Thank you so much for teaching me 😂
I’ve learned more from this lecture than from any art classes I’ve had here in The Netherlands haha, thank you for putting them on youtube!
Huge compliment. Thank you!
I'm learning with your videos for every test for my history of art studies, it is great summary and so funny.
