  • HELLO and welcome to this week's video! With the Wisconsin River blown out, I took the morning to go catch some bass on the Madison Chain and enjoy the year - round catch and release bass season. BASS - NOT ANY OTHER SPECIES. This is not an excuse to target other gamefish species out of season!
That said, I had a hard time keeping them off my OG Rattlin Rapala in the bluegill pattern! Although I caught fish on some other lipless cranks and even a couple on spinnerbaits, there's just something about the Rattlin Rapala that absolutely smashes early season largies!
If you're looking for a fun way to swing hard on some fish before the official gamefish opener on the first Saturday in May, this is hard to beat - and it's a great bite for the kids, too!

Great video! I personally like having the bass catch and release season open all year. It takes a touch of the excitement of opening weekend, as that was normally when I went bass fishing for the first time each year. Keep up the great videos man, I've really been enjoying them.

I love bass year round! Pretty much all I fish for on open water and being able to look for them as soon as the ice comes off is great! Keep up the excellent content 😊

Surprisingly I never run a leader. I run 40lb braid one one setup and 12 lb fleuro on another for bass all year round. I absolutely love the fact that we can catch and release bass all year round. I’m afraid that people are going to take advantage of it and “accidentally” catch walleye and pike. Of course it’s impossible to avoid catching those predator fish. Wish we could tell those fish “No!”. It would save me a ton of money. But you are absolutely right about just leaving the area if you’re catchin those fish. Wish everyone would think the same. Been on so many 4 and 5 pounders on the chain. It’s been an awesome year. Shorefishing too.

It's great that you can target them... I just had a 33 fish day on my bassin lake. 6 pike the rest were bass. Here in Southeastern Wisconsin...

As usual you have great taste sir, rattle trap is my fav early bass spring bait! I think early bass is totally fine, Iowa has had great numbers of both species my whole life and we have had an open bass season always and there has never been any population issues.

Noah, heard about your videos through D&S's fishing report. Super glad I found your channel... Already learned a ton from just watching this video. Looking forward to future videos man! Love the early bass season.

I was in that area this past Friday. Water temperature was about 61°. I hammered the bass on a chaturbate. They would not eat anything else. Slow steady, retrieve, bouncing it on the bottom. They were in 7 to 9 feet of water.

I use rubber work dropshots almost exclusively until they put some of the fishing piers up then I switch between what your using and rubber dropshot worms. Then when they move out deeper I concentrate on catfish on Lake Mendota with a few carp trips just for the heck of it. I think I might have ten feet of line out for that and can sight fish for them.

For what it's worth, I think the new VX charts has the dredge hole mapped out. Related question, is it safe to run from the river exit down to the dredge hole? I've never been down in there. Thinking about going to check it out this week.

If you get the new VX updated Wisconsin Lakemaster chip it has that dredged hole on the chip. I too used auto chart last year to chart that area. And now I do not have to.
