You were talking about how recorders are sensitive to humidity which reminded me that once a classical music critic lost his job in Iceland cause he reviewed a concert and one of the pieces was a recorder concerto by Vivaldi and he said that the performance was something quite special . . . . but the thing is, that part of the concert was cancelled cause the performers recorder snapped in the cold and low humidity of Iceland so it was quite clear that the critic wasn't even at the concert.

Thank you Sarah, for your videos. I love them. They are such a big inspiration to me. You showed me that the recorder is not just a simple instrument for children, but so much more!! After 2 years of self-study I am still at the beginner level. But you arouse my ambition to go on with it. You are such a cheerful woman, full of energy. It's always fun to see your videos. I wish you and your family a Happy Christmas!! Health, luck and all the best for the next year!

Aaaaaah! Thank you so very much for answering my question, Sarah!!!! I'm the one with the tenor holes question.
If you don't mind, may I ask if you have any advice at all on what to do if the holes ALL OVER the tenor recorder are too large for my fingers, or feel like they are? Because I.... Sigh. I feel like I have to hit them 110% accurately in order to cover them at all, and that's for all of them. Even if I just try to cover one single hole at a time so there's no stretch anywhere.
Admittedly, my two tenor recorders are both rather OLD, and the holes are visibly worn, so I don't think they were this large when the instruments were NEW.... Is there anything I can do to make up for the worn holes? I wonder if part of my difficulty isn't TECHNICALLY the size of them, but that since they are so WORN, I think maybe I am having trouble "filling" them completely, because there's a dip around them, kind of? Am I making any sense?
I also want to jump in here and tell you that I had a drama/music/arts performance assignment at my college, just for the three teachers in those subjects, and I was playing a melancholy little tune on my alto recorder as the introduction. Just while walking around and seeming lost in thought. So like, it definitely did NOT have to be perfect!
But god, I was nervous..... It was about -12 degrees Celcius that day, and I did NOT have time to warm the recorder up properly once I came to school, because I had to set up the room, create the stage, get everything ready - and the recorder kept falling out of wherever I put it to try to warm it up! I had to give up and just wrap it in my scarf and put it on top of the piano while fixing everything.
And then the teachers arrived, and sat down, and I had to start. Just had to cross my fingers and HOPE that my recorder would be okay. It felt cold against my lips and fingers, so I was very nervous...
It was... Not having a great time that morning. So I opted out of playing more than just the small introduction, and as soon as my character noticed the audience and started interacting with them, I put the recorder down and did not pick it up again, even though I had originally planned to.
The assignment went extremely well, but I just wanted to share this with you, because I felt so sorry for my poor, darling alto.

Thank you, Sarah, for all the videos you've made! I can't thank you enough. I started teaching myself the alto recirder last April. (I play and have taught piano, and understand music theory fairly well, which helps.). But really i consider you my recorder teacher! So much insight, hot and cold air, etc., i would not be this far along with out your videos. My husband was forced to retire early (company closed), and I thank all those who support team tecorder, as I dont have the extra funds for lessons. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Thank you, Sarah, for your great videos . I taught myself the descant recorder when I was in primary school, a cheap plastic toy one .
And now I am 72, and bought a second hand Moeck tenor recorder , has one key , lovely sound , but very challenging. Specially gir older finger's.
I thought of moving the mouth piece section to the right,a bit , to make it easier to reach low d. Could you please let me know what the correct alignment is ?
    Thankyou again for encouraging videos,
    Rex

Thank you for this useful video! You highlighted two issues that i'm facing these days.
When you recomend playing-in the recorder for a week after a long period of inactivity (in my case 5/6 months), how should we manage this ultra-fast-playing-in ? How long should we play the recorder each day during that week ? Should we start from lower notes and getting higher day by day like in the first playing-in ?
You talked about the stretching required to cover the holes in a tenor recorder. What about the correct rotation angle of the foot joint ? I can't find anywhere (books, web, etc..) a rule of thumb for this important topic and i feel being able to play my keyless tenor only with a significative rotation but i'm not sure i'm doing the right thing.
Thank you very much for your work!

Hi Sarah, great video. It looks like the bell notification feature is turned off/disabled (in the US) because you videos are marked as being "made for kids." Apparently Google disables the bell notification feature if a channel is set to made for kids. So that is why we are not getting notified of your new videos anymore.

Dear Sarah, a few weeks ago, I bought a sopranino for my wife, after she fell in love with Vivaldi's C-major concerto. Now, she can get most of the notes quite well, with the exception of that low double-hole F. Very often, that pops up to some high overtone region. I can't give any advice to her, I don't play flute. Do you have an idea, how she could get that d... note?

Hi Sarah! I've been enjoying your videos so much! Any recommendations for a player who has peripheral neuropathy? I'm returning to recorder after many years, but it's really hard because neuropathy makes it hard to feel the holes. Any suggestions? I'm a multi-instrumentalist who has already pretty much given up on violin now. I might just have to settle on piano being my only instrument, because I can see my hands while I play. Sigh.

Have you thought about Paetzold instruments - finger placement is not crucial. I had basses before a stroke, but bought a tenor for a similar reason.

    • @priestessofkek2406
      @priestessofkek2406 Рік тому

A Nuvo recorder might work. The holes have little silicon pads that do the actual blocking when you press on them, so precise finger placement isn't a big deal. I bought one for my daughter-in-law who lost most of the fine motor skill in her left hand after brain surgery.
