  • The single most anticipated adventure ride show of the past decade has ended. With all the chatter around the series from Harley Davidson and ‪@Rivian‬ involvement to the choice of the Livewire and the support needed for electric vehicles, this trip has had more than its share of good and bad press. The show is over now and we have a few thoughts about how LWU stacks up against its predecessors.

    Chad, finished this morning. Sigh. This ending was much like the ending of Long Way Round, for me. Here we are in Alaska, suddenly pulling into New York (granted there is a lot of flat slab between). Beautiful camera work, and drone footage (just ordered a DJI Mini 2 for myself). As I said on Fbook, classic Charlie and Ewan interaction. Very enjoyable. I felt both Central America and Mexico were basically afterthoughts. I agree, why all that work on the bus? Where'd the Transit van and generator truck go? What were Russ and Dave doing on the bus? Rivian... Hats off to those folks! The financial risk they took in the hope of marketing their trucks (similar to the risk and WIN BMW got from Long Way Round, while KTM is kicking itself for missing the chance to define long range touring). Certainly, I thought Long Way Up should end in Deadhorse, AK (I feel somewhat cheated that it ended in LA, for obvious marketing reasons). I would like a separate "tech section" on how they kept the Rivians and bikes charged. The Rivian folks figured out how to charge the bikes in 2 hours off of the truck battery, great (gives me faith in their engineers for sure)! How are the trucks charging? If the bike can only go 90-ish miles on a charge, how do 200+ mile days go. Those tech issues are things I want answered. One might try to run a comparison between Noraly (Itchy Boots) vs. Charlie and Ewan. They are completely different and shouldn't be compared. In watching Itchy Boots on her way up, I was curious how she will eventually solve the Darian Gap and the criminal risk associated with some of those countries. Hopefully we find out once COVID stops. In the end, I enjoyed it. I have no desire to buy a 900 lb adventure bike that only goes 90 miles before charging 6 hours (I went with the 690 Enduro to cut 100 lbs of weight from my KLR). I would think about a Rivian if there was more information about how it could perform towing a travel trailer...

      I didn't even remember the quick finish of LWR but you are right. They seemed to skip over a lot of the remainder of land. I kind of get it in the States as it feels pretty far from adventure when they leave Russia but I am surprised we didn't see more Alaska and Canada to close out the trip. Same is true of LWU, I don't need to see the States but to skip most of Mexico so we can see you build a bus seems ridiculous.

      @A Smith There's an interview with Claudio on the ADVRider channel and he talks about getting his gas can stolen on multiple occasions but he still doesn't explain why he was so absent in the series. I guess the interviewer didn't want to be rude. Sucks we may never know what the deal was.

    The Claudio absence was just so weird. They even made a point of decorating his bike and yet like you said, he was barely featured the whole series and not mentioned **at all** in the final episode if I recall correctly. He is a hugely likeable person and to leave him out seems wrong both from a storytelling and from an honesty angle. The ONLY reason I could think was because he was on a gas powered bike and they thought that somehow detracted from their electric bike focus. Otherwise I can't explain it. Really hurt the show, and added to the mysterious gaps involving the Rivians and other stuff right up to the end that made the show seem the least genuine so far.

    I enjoyed the series overall. The 4K, the drones, the story. The bus killed it for me, and so did taking the long flight and towing Ewans bike so far. I would brought the HD techs to the bike. I didn't really follow this last series at all. Long way down was bad enough so I didn't have any interest at all in Long Way Up. The fact they were on electric bikes with Rivians for support is just a climate change PR stunt. I think this sealed the deal I won't bother watching another one unless they somehow decide to get back to the basics and it is a real adventure again. There are some youtubers out there riding around the world on 2 wheels that are doing it better than these guys now. I hope if they do decide to do another one of these they get back to the basics of these motorcycling adventures, otherwise just call it quits. They are being shown up by you tubers as this point.

    Ultimately, while the bikes did make the journey, they did not complete the trip on electric power - which i thought was a complete failure.
    You mention the fact that they completed a portion of the trip with the bikes on the bus during the night, while charging off generators on the roof. Not to mention the times they put the bikes on a plane or boat.
    Several times the Rivians had to get tow-charged from another gas or diesel vehicle and they treated that like "free" power. Anyone that understands physics knows it's not free, but rather creating additional drag and fuel costs for the tow vehicle. Essentially stealing power from the donor. They didn't mention it in the show, but I hope those that towed them were well paid for their fuel.
    Overall I was generally disappointed.

    • @BeGoneForGood
      @BeGoneForGood  3 роки тому +1

      I agree. It just wasn't a good representation of the adventure we were expecting. It went too fast and spent too much time on things that didn't have a lot to do with the trip itself. Good effort but I hope they learn and do better with the next one.

    Yeah I imagine they kept Claudio out because he wasn’t on an electric vehicle...they did keep talking about decorating his bike so they definitely enjoyed him being there but the actual end product didn’t do him justice as part of the team. I think the whole bus thing was just David’s idea and as we saw several times throughout the series when David has an idea he just runs with it regardless of what the team says and they are all nice enough to let him do it. Kind of like when he drove away after the brake failure accident and everyone was like well he’s going so I guess we have to follow.

    I did not enjoy this one at all. 5 years ago, I rode from Bogata, Columbia south to Ushuaia, and loved it. Went 37,000 km over 3 months. My biggest negative of this series is they did not show any of the fantastic scenery of South America. Columbia was gorgeous, as was Patagonia, and neither area was covered as it should have been. One last miss was Macchu Picchu, which I found amazing, and they did not give it much coverage. Lastly, I agree that the last episode with the bus was simply stupid and boring. I did not mind the HD Electric bike emphasis, but would never consider the bike a good choice in SA, especially when it was cold. As I said, the HD part was OK, but I would have enjoyed the two guys on GS’s more, but that was not the biggest miss.

    Yes, Mexico was definitely an anti-climax unless they felt being celebrities they could be a lucrative target for gangs esp in the age of social media when everything is out in the open! As for Claudio, unlike the earlier 2 series, he was on a different bike and which ran on fossil fuel, so probably they wanted to focus more on the Electric bikes and showed him less. Similarly, for not covering more of each country, since the charging was the biggest challenge, looks like they just did it on the most ideal route for that. I am guessing its just to encourage people and probably 10 years from now when the charging infrastructure is more advanced, maybe they want people to appreciate how these guys did in 2020....something like how we now ride with Google Maps & gadgets etc and say how people did it 30-40 years back!

    Thanks a lot for your comments and analysis. I completely agree with you. It’s really sad that we don’t see more this great guy Claudio. By the way in a recent interview he said that in this project he has not even been involved in the editing process... so he remains as a basic cameraman’s while we all know that he fully took part of the adventure. In the end, with this rush to go out of Mexico with this famous bus, in addition to what you mentioned I fell uncomfortable with all the money they have probably spent to have this bus set up and a driver that worked for hours to the border... we don’t even know what happened to it. The problem is that it looks like a ‘caprice’, as others (electric thing, ...), and I can’t identify myself in that adventure for this reason. I think the production cost was much higher this time, and maybe not enough episodes to show us more about the countries, the people, as we had in the first series. Cheers.

    Great review. I had many of the exact same impressions. Still they are all very charismatic people and fun to watch as they go through their adventures, even if they seem way more canned and manipulated this time around. Charley and his idiocy will always be fun too, as long as he doesn't kill himself.

    Great video. I fully agree with everything you've said.
    My assumed answer to this is that they were perhaps trying to do too much with regards to content ie. bike team, support crew, harley, rivian, charging etc. So much so that the actual travelling through each country suffered. A glimpse of the original two series was early on, when they found themselves eating with welcoming families that couldn't speak English. In addition (and no doubt this is money related) but its sad that after the efforts put into filming something like this, and the fact that it is streamed with no TV scheduling constraints etc that there weren't simply more episodes. Especially as a high percentage of the viewship would have definitely been hungry for more.

    I totally agree 100 percent , great at first but so so disappointed with the last few episodes, I really hope this isn’t the last trip they do because it’s not even close to the first two and would hate this to be the lasting memories of the LWR and what in all honesty made me take my bike licence for the adventure experience . Fingers crossed 🤞

    A good review of the series and I completely agree with the points you made, both good and bad, I certainly couldn’t understand why we finished with the conversion of a bus! As you say it left me feeling that the final episode was a bit of a strange finish sadly. Like you I enjoyed the series because of Ewan and Charlie but re watching the first two series have made me realise how much better they were..... Like you I still hope they do another trip in the future! 👍 .... (PS re Claudio check out the great interview with him, also on UA-cam, which gives a great insight into his story! 😊)

    Charlie is no stranger to fighting through pain, check out his 'Race To Dakar' series.

    • @taswr
      @taswr 3 роки тому +2

      @@BeGoneForGood yep. I think age is the main factor (which it would be in their situation), they are naturally more cautious as the recognise their families more, wealth, everyone slows down as they age. Other factors are politics, finances and controlling issues from HD, Apple TV etc etc.
      I was really disappointed with the lack of spontaneity, lack of showing more culture and more scenery of places they visited. Also they didn’t involve themselves much in anything or involve locals more. Very stale series, compared to their other expeditions this one was too orchestrated, it had to be for the sake of charging vehicles but I didn’t feel the enjoyment in this one like the others.
      I mean look at the route they took.... that’s the best they could put together 🤷🏼‍♂️

    I'm sure there is a TON of footage that got left out, so fingers crossed they'll be that on whenever they release the series on DVD. Another thing to consider (when it comes to the final product) is the editing: Who had control? Did Apple have ultimate say? Were there unforeseen parameters we don't even know about?? I'd bet dollars to donuts the answer is a big fat YES.

    i agree that the Mexico part of Long Way Up was a bit of a disappointment. I watched this partly because I was curious about electric bikes. The series did a good job of showing the limitations and the positive attributes of electric bikes. I recently bought a Zero electric bike just to be an early 'experimenter' with this 'new' technology. Overall, the show was different from its predecessors. My photography background tells me it was the best. My motorcycle travel background says it came in third in the series of three.

    • @BeGoneForGood
      @BeGoneForGood  3 роки тому

      This is a really great point. The photography and videography part of me really loved the beauty of this run. I was really excited about the electric bike stuff too and I am glad they were pretty honest about the limitations and issues with the bikes in long term travel. I don't think they did as good of a job building the story and experience on this run. I wish they would have gone back a little old school and run the electric bikes as a whole different trip. Nit picky for sure but the first two were such a great ride for many of us.

    I enjoyed it, mostly the cinematography and the friendship between Charlie and Ewan. Back in the day, before YT, Around and Up gave people inspiration and a view into the ADV world. These days there are tons of people online showing it “raw.” It was nice to have something that even my motorcycle hating wife could sit down and enjoy.

    1. Claudio wasn’t shown much because he was on a gas Sportster and they wanted to showcase the EV bikes.
    2. Same reason they flew through countries. It was about charging the bikes.
    3. The bus? The producer panicked about the cartels kidnapping Ewan. Right or wrong? I don’t have a clue.
