The best I’ve ever seen!!! As a single woman, I am truly grateful for this man if only I saw this video before someone charged me $300 to swap out two ceiling fans for two smart ceiling fans smh

Thanks internet Dad! I too really appreciate these videos so much. My Dad died when I was 16 so there was so much about adulting that I didn't have time to learn. Never wait to learn anything from your parents!
Great visual instruction and step by step. Great job!! Been doing electrical for over 10 years and people don’t realize how easy most DIY is around the home. I tell everyone that I do work for that if you’re going to do your own work I HIGHLY recommend a Non-Contact Voltage Tester so you can always double and triple check that there is no electricity in your wires after you shut the breaker off. One issue is you also called your neutral wires your ground wires.
Appreciate the videos. One note, remove black, white, green. Replace green, white, black. The black carries current. Without it, unless your circuitry involves a multi wire branch circuit, there is no current. The neutral completes the current. You don’t want to get caught in the current, so you want to close that option by connecting the whites first before connecting the current with the blacks.
What if I only see the white wire and black wire connected on my previous light , but when I buy the replacement the light came with white wire, black and yellow wire And I couldn’t find the green or yellow on the wall ?
@@JAM-vu3olit should've had a green wire / green+yellow wire or plain copper wire as earth, if it didn't then this means it wasn't wired properly or your light didn't need an earth

I’m 37 and single and never imagined needing to do this stuff on my own but here I am. Aaaaand I have not even the slightest clue how except that there are lots of wires that need to connect to something somewhere. This video was just what I needed!

Bravo! Clear and to the point. Only question I have is the that my previous light had an insulated ground wire and there is no ground screw in the fixture - but my new light has a bare ground wire and I don’t know what to do with it. Guess it’s time to call the electrician 💸
I’m following you on every platform. This man is paying for his daughters brain treatments through social media. I would like if everyone would do the same.
Before working on any electrical device ALWAYS use a multimeter to check that it is not energized. Safety first. Never assume that it is de-energized just because you opened the breaker or pulled the fuse.
And why wouldn't it be de-energized if you opened the breaker or pulled the fuse? If you want people to follow this advice you have to give a "why." Otherwise it just sounds like a ritual. There are "rituals" in just about every task that people do bc nobody stops to ask why they're doing it, just somebody told them to.
when splicing stranded wire (the light fixture wires) with solid copper wires (the wires in the socket) it is best to strip more insulation from the fixture wires so you can get a good tight connection with the solid wires. I like to use connectors from WAGO or similar
Thank you so much for this! Watched longer videos which confused me. Watched this one and was able to replace my light just watching this video. Thanks dad!
I found using WAGO connectors work best. Everytime I unscrew a wire nut, the metal disconnects from the plastic. This means I have to use pliars to remove the metal coil.
Thanks Dad, I burned my house down because I didn’t pre-twist the wires before putting them inside the wire nuts and didn’t know I had to tug on them to verify they were tight. I could have possibly saved the mistake if I had known I that taping each pair together with the wire nut would have kept them together. I wasn’t in my right mind though because I think that the shock I received by turning off the wrong circuit breaker and not verifying voltage before I took the wires apart with my bare hands. Welcome to the internet Pops!
I'm pretty sure this comment is sarcasm but I'll say this anyway. If you read the manufacturers instructions for wire nuts almost all of them say just to twist with the wire nut not to pretwist I mean I'll still pretwist but the manufacturers state that you don't have to for it to be a proper connection. Tug test is recommended too but have you also made sure you stripped enough of the conductor but not too much as to be outside of the wire nut. On the topic of testing after deenergizing its only 120 which can kill you but is unlikely unless you have a bad heart and that's assuming you get shocked in a way that current hits your heart. I only check because I hate being shocked not because I feel life or death situation on 120 volt 240 volt is getting up there and anything past that like 277 or 480 volt I live dead live test boi because I ain't tryna meet God ok. Thanks for listening to my Ted talk I am the lowley electrican browsing UA-cam at 2 in the morning.
Honestly, a lot of times those junction boxes have multiple circuits in them, specially in apartments. You’re better off killing all the circuits just to be safe. Grab a flashlight if you need it and a buddy to hold it.
Can anyone answer how to find the max wattage of the ceiling power supply so you know what light fixture to buy? Table lamps usually have a sticker but how do you find that in the ceiling when shopping for flush mounts, chandeliers, pendants etc?
Never use the wire nut to make the connection. Always wrap the stranded wire around the solid wire first, THEN use the wire nut. :( Do it yourselfers scare the crap out of me.
If you had left the old incandescent fixture in place, when the LED failed, all you would have to do is screw out the old lamp and screw in the new one. Done!
No no no. Yes breaker is off but do you know 100%? Disconnect hot wire first and connect last. You never want to have loose your neutral/return path...
First you should test with a proximity tester ( $15-20 at Home Depot) Second the black wire should come off first but goes together last in case someone flips the breaker on. Third, three complete twists with side cutters before installing the wire nuts. Fourth, Wagos suck.
Wire nuts are fine although I pretwist the conductors and part of the insulated part as well so I know it's a good tight connection. Also after twisting cut a 45° angle helps the conductor get all the way in the nut. Just how I was taught tho.
What should I do it the wall doesn’t have a green one ? Only and black and white one but I do have the copper wire there on the light it just wasn’t connected to the green one ?????
Straight and to the point!!
No nonsense, informative , easy to follow. Thank you.

@socialeyes16 right!!
Some homes may have 2 hot wires (red and black).
As an electrician you just saved people 200 bucks minimum. Good for you, I hate to charge so much for common knowledge but time is money.
Knowledge takes a long time to learn, the long time = money=200 bucks (that is reasonable).
Yall deserve that money, even for simple things. Like you said it's your time being paid for
Any idea why my junction box includes a red wire? House was built in 1972 🤔

Neutral
Hot

This would be condemned in the UK. But then again, we do have the most stringent safety rules of ANY country.

No no no. Yes breaker is off but do you know 100%? Disconnect hot wire first and connect last. You never want to have loose your neutral/return path...

Exactly, with my luck I'll end up getting electrocuted the second I take the cover off 😭
@@Sun.ce.214 Right? Or I'll do something I wasn't supposed to, costing me more money and problems than what I started with
You should have connected hot wires last else even the neutral will be energized.
Though you have shut off breaks, but it's a safe practice
Thanks
Remember in the the NEC you have the ungrounded conductor ..grounded conductor and grounding conductor
DO NOT overlap the ground under the screw. Will lead to breakage.
My ground was connected but not wrapped around the screw. My light is flickering and eventually when out.
Thanks dad

Thanks, Dad.
I am curious why you should attach the hot before the neutral.
Always test the wires because the breaker could be the wrong one…Unless you like being zapped by electricity…
Love you, Dad
Hmm you should improve the wiring by ditching the existing wire nuts and using Wago connectors instead.
Wire nuts are fine although I pretwist the conductors and part of the insulated part as well so I know it's a good tight connection. Also after twisting cut a 45° angle helps the conductor get all the way in the nut. Just how I was taught tho.
Thanks apa !!
