    Hey guys and gals, you loved the original planetary gearbox video ( • Printing functional Pl... ) so much that I decided to take all your feedback and upgrade the reduction gear from 1 planet to 3 planets and now the gearbox has massively more reduction. In this video I show you how to prepare it, print it, assemble it and use it! Please let me know what you think about the video in the comments below.

    There is a gear reduction system like this made of metal, its used for tightening lugnuts on giant offroad dump truck tires. Its crazy how slow it make the drill and how much torque they can put on each nut

    I'd rather see the reverse. Put that drill on the OTHER end and make that thing go light speed at the opposite end. If it was built correctly, it will work - shoot some WD-40 on those gears and try it!

    • @wolfe1970
      @wolfe1970 10 років тому +1

      theres probably not enough torque in that drill to spin the gears from the other end

    • @surearrow
      @surearrow 10 років тому

      That depends on the drill. There are some high torque hand drills out there for less than 100 bucks.

    In this video you say that you don't know why you couldn't print gearboxes for RC cars and other models. Well it comes down to durability. Provided that you could use the right plastic if the printer can handle it, you'd still have to account for cure time of the plastic. In previous videos you discussed temperature in relation to the environment your printing in and the print head itself and that's completely accurate. Understand though, that the resolution you'd need to make a workable gearbox for an RC car is extremely high when you consider the small size it has to be to fit into the vehicle. In other words it would have to be approximately ten times the resolution at one eighth the size. It would also have to interface with the shaft of the motor reliably. Hollow or internal matrixing would be out of the question. They would have to be completely solid for rigidity and durability. Any slight defect could cause failure so I don't know if you could print reasonably decent parts for an RC vehicle's gearbox. It's something to think about at least now that you have perhaps a better understanding.
    As a side note, RC vehicles might make a good DIYGasm or you could start a new segment called HobbyGasm. It's just a thought. Do with it what you will. In the meantime I'm still loving your content so keep it coming.

    If the printer software allows for different settings of the support-material, then I'd love to see different models printed at different settings. I own a seat in Solidworks, so if you would like me to model a simple "support-material test cube", I could model one and send it your way.

    In the RC hobby, plastic gears won't do it, in hobby quality rc's you can make it do a back flip, so it would be made of metal, other than that, great idea.

    • @niclikescakes

      I've raced 1/8 onroad rc and all of our pullys and drive gears were made of plastic, probably not pla but still plastic. The parts on that kind of racing are constantly changed to keep lap times as close as possible and so you dont go broke when you slam it into a wall lol.

    Is there any chance you could post up a video testing the support-structure abilities of this printer? It seems most people focus on non-support model builds, but a large number of real-world parts will require some form of support material to build.

    The big thing in the RC world is that these cars take so much of a beating and, all the little parts are under a lot of stress. Right now a lot of people hate plastic parts. I know its cheap and some parts are reliable but its not worth making breaking making replacing. my point is some people are impatient like me and don't want to have to constantly replace parts...

    Thank you for sharing this Jer . when you said about the RC gears i was thinking yea for sure man you could take a normal gear and size it up or down in the software and change the whole gearing of the car ... Like them rock crawler RC's man you could change so much make it just creep slow with torque .. i like to see you get a cheep rc car and do some gear changing on it you could even take the gear box and size it up for larger gears .. i am just talking mambo jambo lol prob

It has some small gears and a small dc motor powered with 2 batteries 1.5 V . It would be really nice and fun to actually watch you making one of these. And let me know if you can find a solition for the tires cause they are not from pla or abs .

  • @Barnacules

    Yeah, but you can't print an M4A1 at home either, you can only make the lower that holes all the metal parts and even that fails after a few shots. So the home made shotgun is still much more effective.
