    Great information! TFS. I just bred my boer/kiko doe to one of my pygmy bucks, trying to produce a small meat goat that an old lady like me can handle. (Pygmies were originally developed to be meat goats, before they became popular as pets.) If she "took," I may be processing my first goat around this time next year. If she didn't, and if she gets her head stuck one more time (after I horn-proofed my field fence by lining it with non-climb, she pried the gate off one hinge and got her head stuck in the resulting gap), I may be processing my first goat a whole lot sooner!

    I have eaten both goat and lamb. The goats we raised (delicious) and the lamb came from the on base Commissary. That was probably much fresher than the grocery and so much cheaper. I bought the lamb chops and baked them in the oven. A little greasy but Oh so good.

  • @pmessinger
    @pmessinger 5 років тому +12

    I don't like lamb either. And I'm not a fan of mint, so there's no way for me to appreciate eating any sheep. Maybe those big, wild mountain sheep taste different, but if not, I wouldn't want to eat them either. I'm planning on starting up a little place sometime soon and raising goats for meat is certainly right up there beyond pigs and even chickens for meat.
    Also, people are waking up to the importance of animal protein in the human diet; we've been mislead about plant-based nutrition for a long time.

    If you are interested in putting meat on the bone you may want to look into crossing with Myotonics! They have great parasite resistance and low maintenance hoofs like the Kiko but the have the highest meat to bone ratio of all the meat breeds. They do grow a little slower but some of that goes away with the cross and they also loose the fainting gene in a 50/50 cross. We raise pure myotonics and could send some pictures and things if you are interested in learning more about them.

    Great video. I said my Boer goats to the processor and it runs me $99, that includes the butcher fee and cutting it up. I usually try and butcher mine out at a 100 to a 125 pounds but I have sent them weighing less than a 100. When I do that I only get about 52 to 58 lbs of meat. I have not tried the kiko cross but the Lamancha Boer cross produced a very meaty baby and fast growing. I was able to butcher at 9 months for a 125 pound goat.
    I too do not like mutton or lamb. I have noticed that my boar meat is not that much different then a mild venison or a little bit stronger beef. If I marinate my roast or chops in whole milk overnight it's not that much different than beef.
    Looking forward to finding out what the new animal is going to be on the property.

      Goats are quite good looking creatures. Maybe not Lamancha goats...they look like someone cut their ears off...very odd looking. Boer goats are, in my opinion, the best looking goat breed. But that one goat of Daniel's...the spotted one...shades of brown in spots....is a very good looking goat. And goats are surprisingly social. They love attention and being petted....provided they are used to human interaction. I think of goats as 4 wheel drive dogs. Lots of similarities in their social connection to humans.
