Realized I didn't really distinguish Autopilot vs Flow state too much. Auto pilot = lack of focus. going through the motions. Flow state has intentional focus & you're trusting your self 2 to play. So the big thing is focus & awareness. I've found that meditation can be helpful to understand the difference because then you kinda know when you're lost in thought or not.
I took Galway's point about focusing on the ball more like focusing on an enemies head, and then crosshair was more like where you position your racket. Idk if that makes sense
Reading the blue lock manga, they put boredom and anxiety on a scale opposite from each other, explaining how you wanna find a middleground. If the challenge causes a lot of anxiety, its hard to perform, but if the challenge is boring and you don't need to perform even close to your best, you won't usually. Dunno if this helps, I like your tips as well.
You should read "The Art of Learning" and "Zen in the Art of Archery". Also, read "The Unfettered Mind" Specifically, read "The Sword Taia" section. For me, the best breath is very slow inhale through the nose (as slow as possible. Use the slowness of your breath to control your thoughts. All unnecessary impulses fade away with the lack of oxygen. Breath just enough to keep necessary function) and regular speed exhales. All through the nose. Don't mouth breath. Read James Nestor for more on breathing. Andrew Huberman. Someone shout me out. I'm dying out here.
mike tyson's coach cus d'amato would do sports hypnosis on him and he'd tell him things like "you don't exist, only the task exists." which i can't even call it "flow state" cuz it's definitely more than that, like literally BEING the game, not just playing the game. this might help anyone reading and wondering what "flow state" feels like.
I needed this, the concept of how the mental works when competing is complex, and when i feel like i understand it, i learn more that i didnt understand
flow state/hyperfocus is goated. its really somewhere in between the task at hand being not too boring and not too challenging. listening to one of my favorite rappers, scarlxrd, helps me from time to time get into a state of hyperfocus
I agree with everything but focusing on your crosshair. You're supposed to look at the target first and bring your crosshair to it second, but if you just focus on your crosshair all the time you're just making your eyes as slow as your arm instead. What I would recommend instead is to go look at footage from Mobile Suit Gundam of a monoeye suit, particularly the Dom. When the Dom boots up, it has this lone pink circle for an eye that slides left, right, up and down inside a red cross-shaped face as it scans around itself. I get way better flick results in aim trainers (top 1% out of 350k on steelseries microflick trainer) when I just keep my eyes scribbling across the screen as I wait for the target to appear. It's like how in some games people press ADADAD to hop from one foot to the other, but visual. Focusing on my crosshair is something I've noticed I'm doing when I'm drunk and I have to recognize and stop it.
Damn, i just finished a game...i won it but i couldnt focus to perform well and this video is there on discord...ive been having concentration and focus issues lately and i really dont know how to fix it, i'll keep in mind what i learned watching this and try to improve my ability to focus...thank you Dopai!
im more of a quiet watcher and never comment on anything, but I just wanted to say ty for all ur vids. they are helping alot, u are a real one. much love man!
I’d like to say just from my experience, it’s important to stress that you could do everything in your power to set yourself up to enter flow state or get in the zone and still feel off or play terribly. The more you chase after “flow” the further it’ll run from you. I like to think about it as luck based when I’m trying to reach that state. Flow is always there like dopai said but it doesn’t mean it always has to come to you. I’d say if you’re a beginner or looking to start working on the inner game to think about what you can change in your daily routine to put yourself in the best position to enter flow and if it comes be grateful and if it doesn’t don’t beat yourself up. You have to set yourself up and let it come to you. Hope this helps.
I'd say feeling off is self doubt leading to a lack of true concentration, which you need to really reliably achieve flow. Focusing on just the match you can achieve flow just by turning off music and just playing with total concentration
I recently came across Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi who you might be interested in because his research is on a similar topic. Hes got some ted talks and a bunch of books including "Flow: the psychology of optimal experience". Great video, I think talking about the mental behind any competitive game is very interesting. Keep it up man!
Appreciate the advice i also thought of this when I was playing a ranked game i play the best when i don't worry about things and just stay confident woohojin can also take notes for his vod reviews from this video
Hey Dopai! Back at it again with another banger🎉 Do you have any recommendations for self improvement books that would be good to listen to via audible? I have a 25 hour drive across the country coming up in a month, and I'm lost when it comes to self improvement books :(
I’ve listened to both David goggins books on audible. As for other books I’ve read not on audible that I can recommend. The slight edge, how to win friends and influence people, and the subtle art of not giving a f
Love to see your progress and how close I have become to you even though I know you only through a pew pew game and my monitor. Keep yourself up and continue making this awesome content :)

I should clarify that I play something more like a hero/arena shooter than a tac shooter

Theres some sports science around this kinda thing as well its called "relaxed aggression." pretty cool stuff
Ooh.. I actually do that. Everytime i rush my shots or doing dumb decisions, i'll just start doing deep calm breaths to cool my head
