I’ve watched a number of videos on the subject, but this one stands out -- laconic, to the point, with visual support and examples clearly explained. The last with the text is particularly helpful! Hope my students will like it as much. Happy to hit on your channel and wish all the best with this hard but useful work!
Thanks a million for sharing this much needed skills. I'm incredibly grateful for all your support again.I am definitely learning a lot from you. I owe you a lot ❤️ 💛 God bless you
Amazing vedio sir because my country english basic foundation very waste student time. So that every student their futur will failed to ielts exam time some people write 5 to 6 time because of the basic foundation bad. I agree the European system. Very very helpful this vedio my life now.Thank you so much sir.
I'm glad it was helpful. Moving from general English to academic English is always a challenge, even if you have a good foundation. It is a very different kind of English. Anyway best of luck with your studies. Keep at it!
On Rule 7, Avoiding Vague words, what if I am not sure of the exact number of examples, and I do not want my professor to know. For example, for a certain topic, there is a known number of how the subject can be applied but I can only remember a few, and stating the exact number like, "there is three way it can be applied." is factually wrong since the are ten known applications. What to do in such scenario?
Thanks for the comment. There may not always be a definite number. In the example you give it should be fine to write something like this: "There are several ways it can be applied. The following are three important ones." Here you are still being precise in terms of specifying how many you will describe in your writing. Being precise is often about using figures and data, rather than counting the ways things can be applied, which could be a matter of opinion: you can think of seven ways, while someone else may be able to think of nine. Hope that helps.
I haven't made a video about those. There's a lot of information on the web about them. Get in touch if you still need help (contact details on the website). I'm more knowledgeable about APA that MLA though, since I haven't had to use MLA that much.
Hi Lynne Yes, all the UA-cam videos on the channel are available on Youku, specifically for the Chinese audience. The channel on Youku is here: i.youku.com/eapfoundation This specific video is available on Youku via this URL: v.youku.com/v_show/id_XNDUxOTk4MDQyNA==.html You can also see a full list of videos, and their UA-cam and Youku links, here: www.eapfoundation.com/news/social/#yt I guess I should update the UA-cam descriptions to include the Youku link. Academic writing is more formally written as compared to prose and have a more 'rigid' (at least I think so )that has to be followed .Follow Sheldon's videos and I am sure you will understand better.😊
this is why i hate english, but I love that subject because i can learn alot, i just can't speak it clearly, that's the reason why, but i love it!.Never mind, dont mention it
The lack of personal pronouns in writing depends highly on the discipline. There are ways to be academic and formal and use 'I'. I personally think that avoiding first person is pretentious and is not a professional practice when you need to state your opinion apart from a strict analysis, and both things are present in academic writing.
Thanks for this comment. Yes I quite agree. Personal pronoun use tends to be more accepted and common in humanities, less favoured in the sciences. On the related page on the website I mentioned that "Although rules are never a good idea for any form of study (because there are always exceptions), they are usually a good place to begin." So yes, there are exceptions. However, the rules are a useful guide when students are just starting on their journey of academic writing, before they have learned the nuances of different styles in different disciplines. The link to the original page on the website is here: www.eapfoundation.com/writing/style/
@@Eapfoundation Wow, thank you for your reply! And for the video itself! Despite my comment, I find it incredibly helpful and well comprised... I will present this video to a class tomorrow! (I hope they don't see this comment OMG). Also, I thought about the rules and the exceptions as well, because, I think, one is better at identifying where to be more flexible only by knowing the "strict" style before...
Hi. Thanks for the suggestion. I'll consider this in future. I do try to speak more slowly than normal, but at the same time, naturally. It's important for learners to hear natural speech. In the classroom I might speak a little slower, and would definitely repeat and paraphrase a lot more. But the classroom, being a live setting where learners can only listen once, is very different from a UA-cam video, since learners who are struggling can use the captions or rewatch or pause or scroll back a bit to check and so on.

is it possible to have the slides for this video? thanks in advance
Hi Yaseen. Sorry but it isn't possible. The video is made with Videoscribe not PPT or Prezi, so it is continuous animation not a series of slides.
Is this available on a different platform? I would love to share it as a private study exercise
with students in China

Please when you explain something do it more slowly
