He was also stationed at Fort Vancouver in Washington, and visited Fort Steilacoom also in Washington.I want to wish you Sarah a very Merry Christmas and a awesome New Year 🇺🇸🎄🎄🎄
My high school American government teacher claimed that he wasn't a true alcoholic, but poorly tolerated any amount of alcohol, & his staff would make sure that he only had shot-glass sizes to drink from.---I completely understand your ghosts of the past comment. I've had powerful experiences myself, in many different locations...Bandelier National Monument outside Los Alamos, the USS Arizona, the Kiev Memorial. History seemed so alive there.
Bandalier gave me a weird feeling too. I took the hike down to the river after visiting the cliff dwellings and the whole way down I felt like I was being stalked by a bear. Paranoid or what?!
@@sueboobarela1669 For me, I was hearing children playing, women gossiping, men working the fields. Wasn't a spooky feeling, more like a lingering memory from a movie. (Exciting that you've been there to experience the magic of the place!!!)
Your High School teacher was absolutely right about Grants drinking. I’ve studied Grant for 20 years and have read everything on the man. Glad to hear someone’s out there preaching the truth about his drinking, or should I say, his inability to drink very much.
So happy you did not miss Fort Humboldt. After my visit I bought a Grant Biography to learn more. Also learned a lot about the abuse and murder of Native Americans in the Eureka area. As always love your channel.
Guys you are sooo brilliant at what you do . Most of our friends are now disciples of your channel… A massive thank you once again for all you’ve given this past year . Gods speed . Looking forward to next year . Merry Christmas to you and yours … Jamie England uk . 🇺🇸🏴🇺🇸🏴❤️
My Sunday morning is now complete with another interesting history lesson. Thank you, Jeff and Sarah. May you have a blessed Christmas filled with love and joy.
Thanks for the video Jeff I really enjoyed watching it and the awesome History you and your wife cover. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you both. ❤
So many historical facts I didn’t know! I so appreciate the format and perspectives of the history presented in each episode. History made alive, totally unique and interesting by Jeff and Sara!🥳🎉. Thank you for another great post! 🎄🤶
thanks for another great story Jeff and Sarah. I have always admired Grant as a Military tactician who became Abe Lincoln's right hand man during the Civil War. First Black Representative Frederick Douglas called Grant the best friend the Negro had. He liberated the Black's in the South and turned them into all Black battalions to fight the confederacy.
This is an interesting video. My home town Grants Pass, Oregon reportedly got its name from a story in which Grant himself passed by and did not stop for a visit. This may have been during his presidency. I did not know of his history of time spent in the region before.
Hello Jeff and Sarah thank you so much for great story I'm new on your amazing channel I love and enjoy history all my life I appreciate your storytelling with Sarah! Merry Christmas! 🎄☃️👏
Great video! I am surprised too that they have not reconstructed the missing buildings. This video reminded me of Ft. Larned, KS which is indeed still in a very isolated area. All of the buildings there are original and have been put back to what they looked like in the 1860s. Definitely worth a look at least on the internet. Another fort in KS is Ft. Scott. Again all of the buildings are original or have been reconstructed. Both Ft. Larned and Ft. Scott are interesting places to visit.
@@jbenziggy in my opinion custer was the same type of a person as lieutenant Calley , only 100 years earlier. But you are correct he was a jerk ( to put it mildly ) there is a ton of people today who have no idea who LT. Calley is , or was. THANK you for your response.
Merry Christmas Eve, Jeff & Sarah. A very interesting man that you researched here, and president - back when presidents were presidents. Thank you for your research and video expertise.
Interesting video. We visited Fort Humboldt a few years ago. The northern California coast is one of our favorite places. Did you get to Patricks Point State Park? Nancy
Love these history trips....one thing I noticed about Grant. I don't believe I have seen too many pictures of the "young" Grant. If I have, I must not have paid any attention. He was quite a handsome man. Wish I could have told him that Moms do not have that much time to be lonely; they are busy raising the kids and keeping house. Loved this trip, but, as always, hate the "progress" that has destroyed so much of the history. Thanks to you and Sarah, and Merry Christmas!
Wow Jeff. This a story and side to Grant I think most are unaware of. I know I learned something. I went to scout jamborees in Galena IL. His home town. For many years. Knew about his drinking problem. Followed him all his Life. Strange he’s buried in New York. Where graffiti is painted on his tomb. Jeff thank you very much. 💯👍👊 And Merry Christmas to you and your Family!🎄🎁
Beautiful country, still is, but when your wife stops writing you and you sorely miss them...2000 miles away...you start doing things not even realizing you are doing them to effect a change that will hopefully, improve the situation in hand. It's how it was.
Thank you Jeff and Sarah, just some honest feedback…We love your CA history videos the most, not as crazy about the Hollywood type videos. But, that being said, you guys are very good at what you do. Have you considered visiting Nevada County? We’ve got LOTS of great history up here! Keep up the great work.
Yes, you’ll find lots of mining history at the Empire Mine and the Mining Museum in Grass Valley. There’s a wonderful Narrow Gauge Railroad and Museum in Nevada City. You’ll find an Historic Covered Bridge and old ranch at Bridgeport Crossing. Hope this helps. We look forward to more great videos!
History Hunters' videos always leave me wishing there would be more! Jeff, you have a talent for finding the interesting points of any topic! I think it would be cool to completely reconstruct the entire fort. Sad and upsetting that Grant's statue, even though he was strongly Union, was taken down in California. Maybe New York will disinter Grant and the former First Lady, get rid of Grant's Tomb, and build something that celebrates how every pigment-challenged American who lived and breathed in the past was evil. :(
Born and raised in Eureka. Might have been to fort once and that was probably school field trip. Knew Grant had been there. In 50's 2nd and 3rd streets were wild with numerous bars frequented by loggers, Indians, and fishermen. One story was an Indian logger got his chain saw and cut the bar in half to separate themselves. Not an area for the faint of heart. Like to think today we all get along. My best friend is a Wyot.
Very interesting. I did not know Grants early history. I didn't know he had been stationed in Eureka. I have driven past this park many times and never knew it was there lol. I guess I'm not very observant lol. That is awful what they did to the Indians. Very sad.
Not the favorite son. Well known and was stationed there, also very vocal with his dislike of the area. Much as my husband was. His mother still lived there for years on a corner of Harris Street near the Sequoia Park, until her death.
Yeah I thought the favorite son teen in the board was a bit exaggerated. Grant couldn’t wait to get out of the west coast! He was an unknown. I guess the area just wanted to latch onto their claim to fame!
Merry Christmas, Jeff, and Sarah .I am not sure about Grant being a full blown alcoholic. When you visited Fort Humboldt you may have seen the logging exhibits that are also there. They show the equipment and tell some of the stories about Humboldt County and the timber industry. The museum group that I am a part of(Timber Heritage Associatin) has operated two of the steam locomotives that are on display giving rides to park visitors. Another interesting part of Humboldt County.

Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you!
