Rated among the finest marches ever written for the pipes, 'The 79th's Farewell to Gibraltar' was one of the early quicksteps written for troops on the march. It was composed by Pipe Major John Macdonald of the 79th Cameron Highlanders in June of 1848 when his regiment left Gibraltar for Canada.
When their ship was caught in fog in the St Lawrence River, the Captain ordered the pipers and drummers to play on the deck, in order to warn other ships “by their discord”. The was one of the earlier document instances of pipers and drummers playing together.

But we can also sense some joyous relief... because the 79th were happy to be going to Canada instead of the disease-ridden West Indies, which would have been a one-way ticket posting for many of the Jocks. Most people "see" there is something particularly special about this piece. Because there is...

I LIKE THIS FROM THAILAND
nog nooit een harmonie met doedelzakken gezien. Leuk!
Weird to think this is more than a decade old
Nice!
At first I thought it was just gonna be the Salvation Army Band, til the pipes and drums made their entrance! Cute drummers, btw!
No coincidence that the Sally Ann see and feel the blessed joy and sense of security in this march, reflecting its purpose and use back in 1848...
indrukwekkend mooi
Mooie balans tussen harmonie en bagpipes. Vrolijk nummer!
