- A documentary by Oliver Schwabe
The film Bad Woman Blues - Beth Hart celebrates the music and voice of a woman who enriches rock and blues with emotion, authenticity and honesty. Beth Hart inspires and surprises again and again with her unmistakable stage presence and her rousing concerts.
For Beth Hart, there is no separation between art and life. On the contrary: one cannot exist without the other. Beth Hart uses music to fight the ghosts of the past. She encountered alcohol and drugs as a teenager and was later diagnosed with a mental illness. The blues singer looked into deep abysses in her youth and early adulthood. These experiences flow into her art and make her music intense and her concerts unique. An almost spiritual experience - both for the audience and for Beth Hart herself.
Oliver Schwabe's film accompanies the musician on the tour bus, doing yoga on stage before the soundcheck and backstage shortly before her performances. The filming locations are large halls and small clubs on the beach in Los Angeles. Beth Hart lets us look over her shoulder in the studio and talks about her way of working, her setbacks and also about her bipolar disorder, which dominates her life but which she now has under control.
Companions such as her long-time manager Dave Wolff and guitar hero Slash talk about the exceptional artist, whose fan base has been growing steadily for over 30 years. Beth Hart's extraordinary career shows that it is worth staying true to yourself, trusting your own talent and not following every fashion. She is an artist who knows how to take the broad-leggedness out of rock and instead express herself in a soulful and stirring way in very personal songs. And with a voice that is second to none.

She's such a badass role model for women.
No BS, no stupid sexy poses, no half naked posing, just raw talent and 100% hard work.
She has integrity.
Such a rare quality these days.
Fully agree
As a 71 year old woman that grew up in a delightful time of music and peace, I am so thankful for Beth. She's living proof that the music will not die. I love her . Thank you Beth Hart ❤❤❤
I hear you, and I have just turned 72. Hard to believe isn't it?
@@WiLdTiger1951 Yes it is !!
you wrong , she has 51 !
@@jcdrums2798 You misunderstood I'm 71.😊
Создатель , смилуйся ! И продли её Жизнь !!!❤ Я люблю эту Женщину !!!
It's like Robert Plant and Janis Joplin had a daughter...
Love the power in her voice.
❤
I love everything about this woman, her voice, her hard arse attitude, her honesty and her don't take shit from anyone .
When I feel low... earbuds in, Beth on...and I can clean the whole house.
She gives me so much energy ✌️🫶🔥
Can’t count the hours I have spent listening to her…since 93. Best performer ever….period.
I first saw Beth when she was on tour with Joe Bonamassa, and I was totally blown away! Such vocal power and stage presence made me a fan for life!!
Peter Frampton often said that he just could be a guitar player behind a great singer and he would be happy with that (even if he's a great singer himself)...I think the same apply here for Bonamassa with the difference that he's a great guitar player but not so great singer...and I appreciate him much more with Beth than without her!
Did you try to visit any opera? Just to see real vocal power.
@@danieldesjardins6615spot on! I enjoy both Joe and Beth but together they are just the next level.
My husband and I are in our 70's and have tickets to see Beth for the first time. I have a feeling it won't be just a concert, but an experience.
The best live performer on the planet.
Absolutely!!!
Yes, one of the best
She and Freddie;)
One of the most soulful voices
I would even say that this is the MOST soulful voice!...
I am so happy to see you getting the recognition you deserve with this documentary. You are so much more Talented than than so many people at the top of all the charts. I hope this helps you to blow up into the Superstar you deserve to be❤. Ever since I discovered you a couple of years ago I felt you are the single most talented and viscerally honest female singer on the planet. ❤ you Beth
The ONLY reason she never made it to the top of the charts is because she never sold her soul to the devil. You won’t catch her covering up one eye and doing creepy, Illuminati gestures. She has more talent in her little finger than all of the airbrained Taylor Swifts combined.
It's so true. Beth Hart's tough life has informed her music. She's a master of the blues, because she has lived it. I've seen her perform live. She's one of the very best artists of all time in any genre. 😻 God bless Beth Hart, and I wish her many more years of success with her wonderful band mates. 👍💖🎸😎
So right. Beth doesn’t play her music, she lives right in in it, whether she’s playing or not…
@@lifeonmars99 👍👍👍
She's, without a doubt, the Janis Joplin from the 21th century, what a badass woman, what a voice. God bless Beth hart.
Janis Joplin yelled and screamed. Beth sings. And beautifully.
@@twhittaker66 both Janis and Beth lay out their heart and soul through music. Janis got up there on stage and showed it can be done. Janis sadly is gone but lives on through her music and style of expression. Janis opened the door, Beth walked through it and shows the world that it is perfectly fine to share that deep felt emotion. Had Janis not passed at such a young age her voice would have become more refined just as Beth's voice has become. Both women have had their struggles in life. Struggles that show in their music. They are both unique yet similar. They both touch my soul. There should be no competition in music, only appreciation. Music is art not a sport. I have seen Beth up close at her performances in Hollywood, California. She is an amazing performer and an incredible person. She engages with her audience because she appreciates they came to watch her and her band perform. She will look into as many eyes making a connection with each person as she possibly can. I lit her cigarette. She is even a better human than a singer. That is saying a lot.
@@twhittaker66That's a bit harsh! Joplin was a trailblazer, and Hart stands on her shoulders. Having said that...Hart has skills and range that Joplin (and most vocalists) lack!
@@carlwilliams6977 sorry. Not harsh, just my honest opinion. Never could stand to listen to Janis Joplin. All
I hear is yelling! Never liked her. But, I love Beth Hart. Why? Because they don't sound remotely alike to me.
@@twhittaker66 It's not only a harsh 'opinion", it's factually incorrect. While Joplin generally delivered in a rough, bluesy style, she certainly COULD sing. "Me and Bobby McGee" and the intro to "Piece of My Heart" being two examples of a mellower delivery of which she was capable.
When you're stating an "opinion" about a icon of a genre, you might want to stick to facts!
BTW, don't look now but what the hell is this? 34:55
THAT'S BLUES BABY! 😂
best singer i have ever seen...50 yrs going to concerts
The term I read in a book somewhere ---Heavens Martyrs. Those souls among us who are given so much struggle, but from that struggle comes so much beauty that touches so many other souls.
That is what I think of when I think of Beth.
There is a lesson for life in there somewhere.
So true!!!
I love you Beth so much! My favorite female vocalist. Part Janis Joplin; part Etta James; and part Tina Turner. What a woman!
same here, follow her quiet some time, just a little worried seeing her getting so thin these days, but she seems to be in a good place /mindset
And ALL Beth Hart!
I came across your music after battling addiction for 20 years I heard one song - Am I The One- that made me realise I was the only one to let go of it. I’m clean now for ten or more years- thanks Beth x
I absolutely adore Beth Hart and her incredible band/family! I’ve been following Beth for years. Beth is undoubtedly the best female artist out there, hands down. I’m wishing Beth health, continued love and every kind of healing she deserves. Stay strong Beth, we, your extended family, wish you all the best and look forward to seeing you healthy and back on the stage! Thank you Beth for being there for me, your inspiration and songs have helped me get through the worst times of my life, including the recent passing of my husband of 35 years. I am so very grateful for you! Wishing you and Scott love, good health and happiness! 💞
Her live performance was phenomenal. You can feel the emotion that she puts into her music. It’s an experience, not an event. Much love to Beth! Thank you for sharing yourself with us.
Bethy,
I used to have stage fright but I realized I was born with the soul of a singer and had a 100% right to be me. When I sing, I'm 100% there, 100% fulfilled.
For someone with your gifts, I would say you have a responsibility to just do you.
You ARE good enough! In every way we can see.
Amen to that, brother 🧙♂️☮️💖🎶
Why am I just now discovering her? Saw a video of her performing Zeppelin's Black Dog, and was absolutely BLOWN AWAY! Bought the Zeppelin tribute album immediately, and started accumulating her other albums. Beth, you are amazing, and your singing is top notch! Keep on ROCKING!
Everything she puts out is amazing (understand that she is very eclectic). It's even worth getting her very first, self-produced album (Beth Hart and the Ocean of Souls) from 1993 which she never discusses. There are a couple of good songs on it, and really bad ones, but it was her first effort to publish at age 20--she sang a lot of these on Star Search in 1993. For her live albums, always get the DVD's.
Thank you!!!!!!
WTH live at the Paradiso, is absolutely amazing!!! If you haven’t seen it you are in for a huge treat! I’ve watched it countless times! @@ben-schulman
You are welcome!!!@@BethHartMusic
I just found her! I love her! Omg, my soul, her soul, same page. Hurts too
I have been listening to Beth since the 90s. I am never disappointed and always in awe. Get to see her in Hershey soon!
Thanks for sharing this inside look. I can't comprehend your comment about "not being a star" and being able to be anonymous in public. You ARE a star, and quite possibly one of the greatest singers of this generation. Be well and please keep performing.
I've been to two of Beth's live concerts and both were the best I have ever seen. She puts true emotion into every performance, and it draws you in like a whirlpool, and you are better for it.
Beth, you've gotten me through not one, but several heart breaking experiences by sharing yours. God bless you. Love ya.
Beth Hart makes me feel alive again! Her music makes me feel good! The way she brings that music out from deep down in her soul is a sight to hear, feel, and see. After I wrecked my motorcycle 5 and a half years ago, I didn't know what to do. It left me paralyzed from the mid chest down, and 4 years later they took off both of my legs. I faked life for a while. I stayed positive most of the time for the people around me and sometimes a tiny part of that was to keep what I had left going. During most of this time I stopped listening to music. I couldn't dance, I couldn't sing, I couldn't do life. My pain to this day keeps me in this miserable bed. I still try to have some type of faith and hope that God will at least take away this pain. About a year ago I discovered Beth Hart while I was starting to listen to a Lil bit of blues on UA-cam and I stopped the voices in my head and I spent about a week getting to know her and a little of what she's about and I fell in love with it all!! I love her voice, and I love that she doesn't care what anyone thinks about how she does life. What you see is what you get. I still stop when I hear her music and I really listen to it all even though I still haven't completely connected back to life yet, but I keep trying a little at a time. So thank you for your music, thank you for your story that you so openly share and thank you God for her beautiful soul.
Just read your comment hope things are going a bit better for you.
She's my favorite for Soo many reasons not just her music
Having had the pleasure of seeing her perform on stage in a small theater, I have become a fan for life. Solidly in my top five favorite female vocalists of all time. Such incredible stage presence and her magnetic personality make it hard to pay due attention to her excellent band. With Beth on piano they are a sonic treat. ♥️Beth♥️
✌🏼😎🇺🇸
This women is the queen of the blues none better, beautiful person beautiful vocals. Just excellence in stage presence. Take my money
Beth’s voice gives me chills! She is a badass…Joe and Beth, together, are a Spiritual Experience! Love you, Beth!!!!
Beth Hart has filled a void in the music world that no one else could have.
Power, honesty, art, devotion, commitment, style, dedication, molded in hard times - I SAID HARD TIMES !!
I'm a true believer in her and her work.
Beth is the Best female performer of all time!!❤ I'm 61 and listen to all genres of music and this women is thee sh**. Her voice, her lyrics, her shows are the ultimate. Of all the hundreds of concerts and bands I've been to, can't wait to be at her concert May 9th 2024, only wish I could meet her and tell her face to face how awesome she is ❤
Best singer. The soulful voice.Real, raw and uncut. Stay Blessed.
A true musical phenom words can't describe the value Beth has brought to the music industry
Been a fan from the beginning. Hands down the best, uncompromising, female blues singer, and songwriter, alive.
Beth is my hero! Thank you for the years of music and inspiration. I wouldn't be sober without your words years ago at Jimmi's.
Beth, you could never be selfish……….you’re an empath that gives so much & receives back. Such a wonderful human being you are. Thank you for this amazing documentary 🙏🙏🙏♥️♥️♥️, fucken rock on!
Menudo concierto realizo en Amsterdan en 2014 ....

I'm a fan Beth love your music I'm 74 . My favourite I'd rather go blind . Loved you doing that on RocKwiz. You do Etta James so well. Keep up your passion. X
She is so amazing but it’s hard to find the right words how she just grabs your spirit
Got tickets for my second Beth Hart show this year... As some of the comments have already noted, she's a badass. No doubt. She is a live wire.
Just found her last week with Joe Bonnamoso and can’t get enough of her Fantastic Singer, and I’m 75 and heard and saw a lot music, she’s the best
I've listened to many many bands/artists over the 53 years I've been alive. There are very few performers that can reach in and grab you by your soul the way Beth does. She's been thru it, and she's still humble and honest, and the energy she sends out is goddamn electric. Legendary.
Been a massive fan since she bowled me over with her 'Immortal' album ❤️
Adoro questa donna e la sua voce meravigliosa ❤
Beth Hart is a fantastic artist. One of the best singers I know. An amazing person too. I love her and I always look forward to seeing her live on stage.
My favorite singer. Her voice is pure gold
Best female blues artist known to man!
She is incrediable and so loving. Thank you Beth for blessing us with you talent!❤❤❤
Voilà déjà 8 ans que j'ai découvert Beth Hart et j'adore.....
Beth je vous souhaite un bon rétablissement.
J'attends avec impatiente votre retour en tournée.
Amicalement.
I already want to watch this again. Saw Beth in Chicago..blew me away!
Hands Down our favorite artist, especially live. Such unbelievable talent
You cant beat biking, its living life in the fast lane giving that buzz without doing drugs for it. Youve got the same passion for giving love to others, having fun, listening to great music and great times travelling, enjoying being grounded, real, humble enjoying the simple things in life. You are all real and like Slash and Rory Gallagher, you never sold your souls to the record companies and their corporate, fake, plastic cowpats. I luv that and your rising up and not letting your mm ental struggles win and define you. God bless you all. Xx
I was at live concert of Beth in Kyiv, Ukraine. I never forget what an incredible energy came out from Beth when she's singing. Now when I'm down in the dumps I listen to "Bad woman blues" and get back on the track. Thank you so much, Beth for your music, it's uric and fucking great! That's what real talents do instead of jumping to the bandwagon. They create through their soul and they sign through their hart.
Ask anyone who knows about singing and vocal power, this lady’s name is always on that very small list. This passion comes from the heart and soul. From out of the fire a phoenix has risen in all her glory. Beth you fucking Rock 🎸❤️
Couldn’t have said it better! 💕
What a blessing it is listening to Beth and her great band. She is great like Bonnie Raitt a true great blues woman. Thank you Beth and Scott.
Emotive, inspiring and uplifting. A story of someone born to sing the blues as it should be sung. Thank you.
Followed her for a long time.. how real she is just shines through..
You have not seen anything until you see Beth Hart live. I am surprised, Joe Bonamassa does not appear or not even cited in this documentary 🤨
Great documentary, certainly one of the best ever made about Beth! I was so frustrated when it came out last week with a German dub and no subtitles, because I'm French and I don't understand a German word. Thanks to WDR for this original subtitled version ♥

I first discovered Beth going to Jeff Beck at the Warfield Theater in S.F.
Jeff played a few instrumental tracks and then brought Beth out for a couple, then again throughout the show.
It was so great I really enjoyed that format. And I thought who is this great singer?
I love her first solo records, really moving and melodic.
She continues on, Joe Bonamassa collaboration. And solo.
More greatness to come. 🕉
She's SO awesome...so many times I just found myself smiling at this chick's mojo!!!!

Great Docu. Beth is an amazing singer, songwriter and also her coverversions are outstanding. Her Emotions, Energy and the way she´s presenting the songs....listen to her and she´s catching you from second one.
Beth Hart the best blues singer of all times female
Beth, you could certainly appreciate and enjoy the classical composers. PLEASE! ALWAYS enjoy the gifts of those masters.
Thanks for that, Beth. You are something special, on you’re own way, that’s perfect.
Been a fan since 2010 and a friend played her music for me. Then later I met another musician because I was looking at her bio and she listed her influences as Beth, Zeppelin and Bonnie Raitt.
Finally got to catch Beth live in New Orleans a year ago. I don't know if it was part of the setlist, but during a pause I shouted out, "Bad Woman Blues". She laughed and looked over and asked John, "Can we do that?" He said, 'Yeah', so they did. Best thing was I'd gotten front row seats for my friend and she'd recently started performing it on her solo shows for me. It was awesome!
Beth, your music, your words, have been with me through some of my highest highs, lowest lows, brightest and darkest times. One day I will have the joy and privilege of seeing you in person ❤️
I saw her when she was starting out and Beth was awesome. Great show.
