Diastolic heart failure is one of those trickier cardiac subjects to learn about in nursing school. So in this video, we're going to break it down really easy for you to understand! :)
What is diastolic heart failure?
Diastolic heart failure is caused when the heart can't relax and fill properly. This leads to a lower cardiac output, simply because there's not as much blood in the left ventricle to begin with.
In this video, I'll explain the 5 steps of this process during diastolic heart failure. (You won't find these in a textbook or anything, I just made them up for you to make learning this easier!) :)
Step #1: There is a trigger or a cause (We'll talk about some of the causes of diastolic heart failure)
Step #2: The ventricles get larger (they need to work harder and harder, causing hypertrophy)
Step #3: The ventricles can't relax (they've been working so hard without a break)
Step #4: Decreased cardiac output (this is what causes those signs and symptoms of heart failure)

I'm 73 years old and am in stage 4 diastolic heart failure. Looking back at it, I've had the symptoms for over 7 years, but was not diagnosed until a few months ago. The symptoms remained constant, shortness of breath and aching muscles. The symptoms simply increased in magnitude. Now, walking 100 ft is a task. When finally diagnosed I asked the cardiologist why his peers had not spotted this earlier. His reply was 'I can't speak to their training." Well, this young lady just taught you something that, in my case, was not recognized for years. Well done to her. BTW, diastolic heart failure leads to congestive heart failure. So I got a double "whammy". At this point, nothing can be done to help me. I am greatfull that the diagnosis gave me time to set my affairs in order. Again, her video provides you information that many cardiologists, pulminary physicians and nephrologists, that I met, did not have. Cheers

Hi, is it possible that someone has normal systolic (EF 65%) and diastolic function can have heart failure? My wife's Echo is normal but her NT proBNP is 450.
She feels breathless sometimes and there are bigemni and trigemni in ECG.
We are tensed due to this and doctor is unable to predict anything from it. Thanks in advance.

Great video and amazing resources as always! I really appreciate your effort in making everything easier to understand! However, I have noticed that you always refer to the female nursing audience. I think it would be more neutral and fair to just refer to nursing students without the "girl" or any gender reference.
