My dad played at LSu in the late 40's...he saw Pete practice before his first game and immediately went and bought season tickets. he told me he saw him doing things he had never seen or imagined before....I saw every home game he played at LSU...Showtime!

I was blessed to have watched him play several times against Tulane in New Orleans when I was in high school. We'd show up early just to watch him warm up. He was our idol.

This guy is the Wizard of basketball. The ball obeys his every command. You could practice your whole life and never achieve this kind of mastery. What a legend!!!!!
Keep in mind that at this point in the history of the game, touching anything except the top of the ball while dribbling was a carry. Crossovers and flashy passes were harder to do back then!

Unlimited range like Curry, court-vision and a handle akin to J-Kidd, and the creativity of Magic Johnson. This dude was so insanely well-rounded and he truly was the precursor to so many of the "modern" NBA legends; he showed everyone what the game could be and paved the way for so many of the greats. So dreadfully underrated in the annals of basketball.

@@sbruce9949 Not even close. Pete played when Division 1 freshman's weren't allowed to play varsity basketball or football. So he only played three varsity seasons (89 games) in college yet scored 3667 points, the most of any player EVER in the NCAA! Jimmer had 2599 points in four seasons (139 games) .
Pete averaged 44.2 points a game while Jimmer averaged only 18.7 ppg.
In Pete's four years in college, he ranged from 43.6 ppg as a freshman to a high of 44.5 ppg as a senior (very consistent). Jimmer ranged from 7.0 ppg as a freshman to 28.9 ppg as a senior.
Jimmer had 296 3-point field goals in his four years. Pete had zero, because there was no 3-point rule when he played. But he did take many shots in 3-point range. Somebody went back and reviewed every one of his college games to see how many he actually took and concluded that if the rule was in effect back then, he would have actually averaged between 52 and 54 points per game his entire college career!!
Jimmer scored over 50 points one time in college (52). Pete scored over 50 points ten times including three times over 60 (64, 66, 69)!
Jimmer was one of the best college players of his era. Pete was the greatest offensive college player of all-time!

@bruce song Pete was an amazing dribbler too. The Harlem Globetrotters actually wanted him to join their team but he chose to go to the NBA. Do a UA-cam search on "Pete Maravich dribbling." He developed amazing ball handling skills shown in several of these videos! You might also want to watch ESPN sportscentury biography of Pete Maravich. He had a sad untimely death that shocked everybody and a defect in his heart that made his top-level play even more amazing!
Let’s no forget no shot clock. If he played with a 3 point line and a shot clock experts say he would have averaged 55-60. Best scorer in college. No one even in discussion.
I chased balls for Pete and received tickets to his game for LSU, and then attended every local game and followed the away games on the radio. Pete was always encouraging and inquired how I was doing in school and how our basketball team was doing.

Best passer of all time. Best scorer in NCAA history. Had the three been there he would have averaged 54-57 a game in college based on calculated shot charts. Just absolutly insane. Inovator of the game. His jumper was smoth as could be as well.
When I was a boy playing ball with my friends, we ALL wanted to play like Pistol Pete Maravich. He meant so much to us. The man he became is only totally honorable. A man unashamed of the Gospel.

Happy that I grew up in that era and got to watch Pistol Pete play along with many other greats. He was a magician with a basketball and handling, and his court awareness was epic. An absolute treasure in the history of American basketball, and a fantastic inspiration to anyone with a desire in this sport. What wonderful memories

Probably the best ball-handler of all-time. I should note, for us youngsters, that had he dribbled the way the players do today, he would have been called for carrying. They couldn't dribble with the side of their hands back then, making his ball-handling abilities all the more impressive.

Once in a lifetime...what a joy it was to watch him.
Though he played in a time when most players were white, in terms of all-time production, Pete Maravich was the greatest offensive player ever to play NCAA basketball. His coach at LSU went back and charted every shot he took there and determined he would have averaged thirteen more points a game if they were using the three point line back then. His average would have gone from around 44 a game to 57 points a game. Pretty staggering! But it was the poetry in which he handled and passed the ball that left a far greater impression on me. Even the great Magic Johnson said that Pistol Pete was one of the greatest ball handlers of all time. Of course much can be argued but there is no denying he was way ahead of his time. He had a few amazing years in the NBA before his knee blew out (back then one was never the same after such a surgery). There is a story he told Wilt Chamberlain in a game that the next time he had the ball he was going to take it his way and score over him. Chamberlain allegedly told him to bring it on. Pistol kissed one off the glass high over Wilt's fingers scoring on another one of his circus shots.
It was LSU coach Dale Brown who went back and analyzed Pistol’s shooting and determined he would’ve averaged 57 a game. Pete was coached at LSU by his dad, Press Maravich. Keep in mind that Brown’s analysis occurred when the three point line was at the top of the key and not the line in use today which is about 2-3’ further back. For all of us kids playing jr. high or high school ball back in his LSU days, Pistol Pete was our idol. We read every word we could find about him which included a race to the morning paper to see how many he scored in the previous day’s game. There will never be another like Pistol Pete Maravich.

Usually I feel like I'm just watching basketball. With Pistol Pete I feel like I'm watching art.
by sons still have his old VHS tapes of HOME WORK BASKETBALL. He shows how he did a majority of his trick passes and made the basic passes look so good. He used to dribble two basketballs at a time to and from school every day. In the videos you could see his great passion for the game. He still acted like a kid in his 40's. He died playing basketball in his 40's some time. I guess non of us would mind dying doing something that we loved. RIP Pistol GOAT.
As 6’5 scrawny white kid in playing Jr. High/High School basketball in Louisiana, Pistol was the player I wanted to be like. I asked for #23 in 7th grade and unlike the other guys that wanted it for Jordan I was the oddball wanting it cuz of Pistol Pete! Can only imagine the points he would’ve scored with the 3 point line. Dude has so many unbeatable career records at LSU! A unique chapter in the evolution of basketball!

Thanks, OnParr, for the video clips and memories. I was at the 69-point game in Tuscaloosa and saw miraculous passing as well as shooting. The pass I remember most was him on a fastbreak with a teammate just ahead on the right. Pete slowed at the top of the key, turned as if to wait to set up an offense, then flip a pass to his teammate under the basket for an easy layup. The Bama defender was caught flat-footed. His teammate obviously was ready for it but not Bama. Not that night.
This is sick stuff! I never got to see Pete play at LSU but I did get to see him when he was with New Orleans Jazz on a Thanksgiving night in the mid 70's. He was a treat to watch! Imagine if he'd had the three point line and they would have kept track of assists back in his college days!

According to Wikipedia, he averaged 5..1 assists per game. It has also been widely reported that Dale Brown, using the original 19-9 line, determined that Maravich would have had 13 three-pointers a game.

Look up the vid "Bill Walton on Pistol Pete". The LSU coach went through every shot of his college career to find out how many 3 pointers it would have been. He would have averaged 13 3 pointers a game for an average of 56/57 pts a game.

I've always heard he controlled the ball like it was an extension of his own body, and its so crazy to actually see it for the first time. Also a thing that I notice was how fast he actually was able to put up all his jump shots, it seemed as if all the ones in this video were just a quick stop into a shot. The man is outstanding, I wish I could have seen him play.

Pete Maravich was crazy good. One of the all-time greats with no doubt whatsoever. He could do anything with a basketball and would be a superstar in any era.

If there was a three point line it would've been his range. He still holds the record for the best points average for season and career at 40 something for both. I heard someone went back and watched all his videos from college and if there was a three point line he would've averaged 57 a game!

What is crazy is that even though he is known for his insanely prolific scoring during his NCAA career, most of the highlights in this reel are of his creative passing skill. I once read that if there was a 3-point line in NCAA B-ball when he played, he would have averaged 13 made 3's per game and his career scoring avg. would increase from 44.2 ppg to around 57 ppg. Don't know which is sicker... 57 ppg or 13 made 3's PER GAME. The NCAA men's record for made 3's is 15. 3 guys are tied for 2nd with 14. 3rd is one guy with 13. Pistol Pete would have been in the top 3 all time nearly every single night.
This guy still is my all-time favorite player. His skill set was so insanely high it was ridiculous. His pop used to have him walk the railroad tracks while dribbling the ball on the rail. That's just crazy. Ppl think that I'm joking when I tell them that the Pistol is where Hakeem got those ball fakes he used to do from but watch Hakeem vs Robinson & he destroys David w/that move lol.
c2g1980 Growing up Pistol was one of my fav guys with Earl "The Pearl" and Clyde Frazier. He turned it out every night and I feel so sad because the year he retired was the year the Celtics won the Championship. They shoulda given him an honorary ring...
Jay Man Not just before the 3 point shot but before the shot clock as well. In those days, people could just pass the ball around forever if they wanted to, leaving less shots taken and therefore scoring time for everybody.
These are highlights from the 60's.Ive seen at least 6 PLAYS/passes I still haven't seen done by anyone else to this day.

Dropping dimes with the behind the back bounce passes either hand. Paddle passes that nobody saw before. Master of the one handed jump shot. I so wanted to see him play but sadly his team LSU wasn’t that good and they didn’t broadcast games like they do now so I relied on Sports Illustrated articles which wasn’t enough. Pete wasn’t just a great ball player he was a showman and seeing was believing when it came to Pistol Pete!

The pistol was one of my isles when I was playing. I knew all of his drills and practice. Players now don't have that type of focus.

You should talk to Larry Bird & see what he thought of Pistol Pete, since he did play with him, to get a first person perspective about Pistol Pete. Just a thought, in case you might want to.
Freshstart It so happens I've talked to Bird about Maravich. They played together one year in Boston, Maravich's last. Bill Fitch was a demanding coach and like to run a lot in practice. Pete wasn't up for that, and his body was wearing down, so he retired. The thought of them playing together in their primes is intriguing.
