I have been dealing with a bad instrument cluster for YEARS... at this point I have receded to using my phones gps for speed, while also just getting gas a regular intervals, never knowing how much I really have. I found this video(and the video before it) while searching how to remove the factory stereo. I can't believe how close I was to a fix and never knew it until now. I always figured it was probably an expensive fix that would require lots of money and time. I could do all this in a days time, and surely for much cheaper than taking it to a "professional"
thank you for the videos my dude, you are doing divine things

I just want to replace my faceplate. Does it just pop off from the top?

    Great instructional video.
Is there a video on how to figure out why the gas gauge alone fails to work?
I have no access panel to just replace the fuel sending unit to see if that works.
The other gauges work fine but I do get messages like door ajar or no air bag occassionally

Have you looked at the fuel pump? There’s a float thing that attaches to it that lets your cluster know how much you got

Question- my customer issue is with the fuel gauge which is well below the E on the left. Do you need to place this at E level?

Thats a good question. If I were working on that I would fill the tank up completely to full, then set the fuel guage needle to full. Otherwise, if you set the needle to E then theirs say half a tank of fuel, the guage will forever be off.

so i've been working through it, but before I can go on I need to know something. One of the malfunctioning gauges on my impala is the fuel gauge. Any info on how to fix that?

I reread and realized I probably wasn’t clear in my question. Will replacing the fuel gauge motor affect it’s readings?

Yeah it will affect it by reading correctly finally

How do you know if it's a stepper motor or a sending unit failure?

with a proper scan tool, you can request a gauge sweep. Defective stepper motors are obvious with this test.

So I had to replace the speedometer and temp gauge stepper motors. Speedometer is still not working. I'm fairly confident I did the soldering properly. Could it be a speed sensor maybe?

is the trip reset button a button, or a dimmer too?

Why move the needles to 0 when you are replacing the old motor?

How do you know what stepper motor to use ?

The motors have a number on them, so you can cross reference that, that one way. The other is Amazon.... if you look them up there, Dr.Speedometer to name one has kits for specific cars. I'd link, but I don't think it'll let me, but I'll try below. For the 2005 Impala I did, the motor number was X27 168 and came with 2 more than I needed, a tool to remove the needle and lights.... but the lights were the wrong style and were to few, so I'd get some to do it if you want to replace them while your there.
