I have the original flex cut carving jack and like it. Great for sitting around the fire and carve something.
I bought the Old Timer Spinter a while ago and I've never used it because the grinds are just junk and I'd have to do significant regrinding to get it in working order. The slipjoint action sucks too, it just generally doesn't inspire much confidence. I'd definitely recommend saving money and getting a proper tool if you want the gouge capability, otherwise a simple little pocket knife would be a better buy.

How about a video on using the pelican knife. I have one but dont know exactly how to use it carving.
I have that one on my list too!! Well, more like tips for different knives and when to use them.
The pelican knife is first and formost a slicer and is good for taking off wood. Sonin cases that you want to more efficiently take off sections of wood this is the knife for it!
I got the flex cut ones. You won’t be disappointed.

I have the first model spoon jack. You were so generous for me. Now I am looking for a long while now, to get the newer model. But always out of stock. 2 shops sell flexcut in the Netherlands. So not much luck to be quick enough 😁
Only downside is, they cost $221 😢

Thank you for the review! What I don’t understand with this type of multi tools is that they don’t have a small knife for detailed carving. The smallest knife on there just seems too big for detailed whittling. For this reason I see the Tri-Jack as the only real option in this segment, but then, you miss out on all the gouges etc.
What do you think?
Oh that tri-jack is amazing with that little detail knife!
I think the original design of the multi tools was with a wider appeal in mind. You can still do detail work with the flat edge knives but not to the same ease of precision with a small knife.
Really cool video, I‘m getting into the hobby and was looking at a flexcut multitool. Is it possible to make spoons/cups with the carving jack aswell or do I need to go with the spoon carving jack ?

You could probably do spoons with the carvin jack but cups would be harder.
The spoon jack has better tools for spoon carving and you could probably do small cups with it too
Thank you very much for your answer! Since I‘m a beginner is there a good set that includes basic knives and cup knives ? I‘m from EU if that helps, would prefer to not get cheap stuff and buy twice. Or would you say carving jack is good to start out with and go on from there?
Oh, in that case, I would look into Stryi tools!! The multi tools are nice but can be limited in overal use. If you get a full sized set, you can make better stuff faster.

Cheers...i just bought flexcut carving jack 2.0 and their slip strop. Those tools are fantastic..really really satiafied. But i have a question. V chisel and U chisel can't be resharpened by using the slip strop because of the tool orientation of the jack. Please tell me how to resharpen the U and V chisels of jack. It would be thankful if you could make a video about resharapening of pocket jack. Thank you very much !
Quick question, did you buy their slip strop or use the one that came with the carvin jack? I ask because they are 2 completely different strops
@@CarvingisFunI bought slip strop separately .Pocket jack 2.0 doesn´t come with a slip strop. But i saw the carving jack has a slip strop. Now i got the point. You meant that carving jack has its own slip strop right...
Slip strop which comes with the carving jack couldn't be find in the shops or online sites. I ask it from flexcut. But still no reply.

Ya, the one with the carvin jack is a special version and isn't sold separately. They really do need to sell it by itself.
Stropping can actually be done without the fancy strop and it would be a good video to make

not a single video on youtube on how to hand carve a hole by hand (for like a pendant or anything small of that sort), reddit is super unhelpful as well telling you to just buy a drill or use a dremel. could you maybe make it your next video? otherwise great content!
I do have a video idea on "advanced" whittling cuts with just a knife.
Question for you though, how big a hole and how thick is the wood?
I cant make it my next video (i have a few in editing at the moment) but I can expedite that planned video for ya though!!
But if the wood is thin, you coupd do two pyramid cuts from opposite directions. Its more chip carving than whittling, but will work!
Now I wanna make a pendant out of this Brazilian cherry and do this lol

to answer your question: the hole would be big enough to pass a classic necklace string through (doubled up), it can't be smaller than that but it can be bigger if necessary, for practical reasons. I had imagined something around 5 to 7mm of diameter. the wood would be around 1cm thick though.. I could make it thinner if necessary, although I'd probably reduce the size of the whole pendant in that case. (I'm not sure what all of this is equal to in inches)
two pyramid cuts could very well work in my case I'd have to try it out!
brazilian cherry sounds cool though if you ever try making a pendant out of it and make a video i'll make sure to be the first one to watch it haha

I have the Smazinstar or whatever it's called, and it's definitely an upgrade from the Old Timer- you're right, the grinding angles are much better and require less work to get going. I just stropped it out of the box and it cuts beautifully.

Ah. Usually, the links automatically adjust if its available in your area. I'll have to poke around and find alternative sources for the UK
@@CarvingisFun thank you I had a small dig around Amazon is a bit of a no go I found about a year ago an old timer knife on eBay new but that's long since gone
Worth also checking whether it's "uk legal" before you buy so you can figure out if you can carry it around with you (uk legal - no locking mechanism, no blade over 3")
