    A better way Daniel than the soap & water method. The bowl looks great except for the knot hole in the bottom.Roger B.V.S.Australia.

      Roger Leslie Hi Roger! Thank you for the comment dear friend! Yes, I liked this method a lot, and yes, it was a pity about the know hole, but, I wanted to go ahead and finish the experiment, and my wife actually loved the bowl with that defect! So, she is happy, I am happy :) Cheers and a big hug going to South Australia, Barossa Valley from Reston, Virginia! Daniel

    Hi Daniel .This is good and just what I was looking for!I have just made a bowl out of green wood, (sycamore) and not wanting to wait several months while its losing moisture in a bag of shaving decided to give micro waving a try.I made a small video and have asked if any of my subscribers that have tried this method as to what settings and times they use on the micro wave, one of my subscribers kindly pointed me in your direction, and having watched this video will be microwaving my wet bowl! Many thanks for sharing and have subbed to your channel! cheers Bram

      +Brams shed Hi Bram! Thank you my friend for your comments and for subscribing to the channel. Depending on the size of the bowl, you may want to give it a try for a few minutes at a time at the lowest setting possible. And remove the bowl from the microwave oven every time to let it cool down a bit and evaporate the water. Be aware that your kitchen or the room where you have the microwave oven, and the microwave oven itself may end up smelling like wood for some time (a few days :) ), as my wife, kindly pointed out LOL! Other than that, I have applied the process in another bowl and both times I was really satisfied with the results. Cheers! Daniel

      One suggestion, when you do the voice over, and I understand you were doing a test, you may consider to lower the music volume while you speak, so that the viewer can listen better to what you are saying. I found that the hard way after a few videos :) Cheers! Daniel

      +Daniel Vilarino Thanks Daniel, I do tend to struggle with the video editing side of things but it may help if I get a decent headset and mic I bought the one used in the video from a pound shop and yes it really was £1.. LOLyou get what you pay for !Cheers Bram

    Hi Daniel !!
    This way sounds very promising.It is definitely something I could do as my kitchen scales are specially made for the blind, so it will speak the weights to me during the process
    Great video............Thanks mate !!

      Christopher Fisher Hi Chris! Thank you dear friend for your comments! It is a method that definetively is worth the try. I guess, the idea is to try different things and try to find what works for certain woods and what for others. This one, for this piece of walnut, worked pretty well. Jorge Araujo commented now you have a "toasted walnut" bowl. Indeed! Cheers! Daniel

    Very nice Daniel, my wife purchased me a used microwave and I have in my little work shop, I used to use it to reheat coffee...... Now I have a better use for it. I have some freshly cut cherry that I will try that method on. Thanks for sharing.

      Frank Taylor Hi Frank! Thank you for the comment my friend! That's what I need to do :) It is worth it to give it a try, and not to be dissapointed, because some woods will split no matter what. I never tried on cherry. Let me know how it goes. Cheers! Daniel

    Great video, thanks for sharing! I'm just curious, since it was done so long ago, did the bowl warp any after time?

      Dear Jenny, I gave that bowl to my mother, and I have been measuring every so often and it remains the same. It seems the microwave drying works nicely. Thank you for your comments. Cheers! Daniel

    Hi Daniel, I tried it on the cherry and it did not work out well at all. The bowl developed numerous cracks on the very first 3 minute session in the micro wave. The wood is very wet as the tree was only cut down about 10 days ago. I turned an other one from the same tree and used my soap and water method ( different from your method) and that bowl is still fine.
    I am not discouraged as I think the microwave is a good idea, I may have used the wrong heat setting. Next time I will go with a lower heat to start with .It is all a learning experience and without some failure we never try new ideas.
    Take care.

    • @DanielVilarino
      @DanielVilarino  9 років тому

      Frank Taylor Hi Frank! Thank you for sharing your experience dear friend! I guess a lower heat setting will probably work better, that's why I used the defrost setting, because in my microwave it is the lowest setting. But, that said, there might be woods that are more susceptible to work better with one method and some with another, and even some that we will not have any resource but to go to the store and wait method :) Also, the wood piece I used had been cut a few months back, as you could see it still had more than 20% humidity, but a freshly cut log may have 40% or even more. That's the reason there is no single method that will work for everything every time :) The idea is to begin to generate our arsenal so that we can go and pick up the one gave us the best results in a particular occasion. I will give it a try to the soaking method again, several times in fact! Let me know if you do other tries. Cheers! Daniel

    Came out great! I think the knots really add to the character of it. Found the microwave approach interesting. Not sure the boss would approve of sing the one in the kitchen. Did you find it left any smell or foreign matter after the drying process?

    • @DanielVilarino
      @DanielVilarino  8 років тому

      Hi Scott! Thank you, my friend, for the comment and for watching the video. Yeah! It would be better to get an old micro wave for the shop. It did not leave any residue, but let's say that the kitchen smelled like walnut heated wood for a day or so, and so did the inside of the micro wave. So, to keep the boss happy, it would be better to get an old one! LOL! Cheers! Daniel

    Thankyou for your the information. I see that you used defrost cycle for longer times than the other methods of 30 seconds on high between cycles... THanks again...

    • @DanielVilarino
      @DanielVilarino  7 років тому

      Hi Randy! Thank you for watching the video my friend! Yes, I use the defrost cycle because it is much milder than the other ones and the evaporation is not so sudden, there is less chance to burn the wood. Cheers! Daniel
