Well game prices have been the same for 15 years. Development costs on the other hand have skyrocketed 70 dollars is not unreasonable. I hate it as much as anyone else. But I'm not mad games have always been expensive. They were selling Nintendo 64 games for more when they came out. AND that was in the 90s when 85 bucks for a N64 game was a lot more than 85 dollars today
In regard to the disc drive making the digital version overall more expensive just keep in mind it also has to come with a new panel for the disk drive
It also allows ps5 digital users to change their minds later. It also is a being lifeline thrown to physical media. The disc drive could be particularly helpful in the future if Sony adds ps1-ps3 backward compatibility later.
I really can't understand the hate. The only thing to complain about is the price increase. Which Microsoft did a year ago to very little criticism. There are no other valid complaints. Not to mention that this isn't being marketed as a slim model, but another revision that is replacing the prior model. The complaint about the digital version, with the disc drive being more expensive than the disc drive version is irrelevant. If you purchase the digital version, The chances of you purchasing the disc drive is very small. The way you should be looking at it is they are giving you more options. So if you do later decide you want it, the option is there. You don't have to purchase an entirely new console. Here was the cost before they brought out a detachable disc drive: Digital PS5 $400 + PS5 $500 = $900. Here's the cost now: Digital PS5 $450 + Disc Drive $80 = $530. Saving the person who does decide to buy it $370. I've never heard so many people complain about getting more options.
It weird to me how the console is now cheaper than ever to manufacture but they raised to prices. Back in 2016 I bought my PS4 slim for $250 on black friday (regular price was $350) and it was a better version than the original. I really thought that they would do the same for the PS5 slim so they can sell more units.
@yellow_pikminYea that's tru it's all about the profit. It's just weird how usually the slim would become the mainstream model which is smaller and a little better and cheaper since the tech for it got cheaper to manufacture. I was waiting for the slim mdoel so I could buy a ps5 but now I might as well just wait for the pro if I'm gonna pay that much so I can at least get a lot better and stronger version of the console.
It's not that much cheaper though. Back then they went from a 90nm to a 45 nm process with the ps3, so the die is just quarter the size. This isn't just way cheaper, it allows for a lot of other components to be cheaper. Transistors, fuses, the power supply etc. They also really soon cut the ps2 compability, which was originally achieved by having most of the essential ps2 chips inside. These gains get smaller and smaller, while chip production gets pricier. There is a reason why mid tier gpus under 400 bucks are pretty much dead. Also a big cost is storage and transportation which both have risen with the inflation over the last years. The next thing is that playstation right now just doesn't have to fear the competition, so they can take the money they want.
Ultimately it’s a lack of competition. Buying Series X is generally a pretty poor deal nowadays compared to just getting gamepass and a controller and using your phone. And Nintendo is doing their own thing and will continue to do so with the next switch. Switch is still worth buying if you don’t have a PC that can emulate it, or if you want a portable device, but that’s getting harder to justify now with the likelihood of a new switch. PS5 is really the only big next-gen system worth buying and they know that; so they can get away with it. Though personally I doubt it’ll sell more than the PS4 and Switch.
it has the standard nvme like the ps5 had, but it would be nice if you could get one more there, like at leat here 1tb nvmes are the best priced, if you're looking at 2 tb here it costs more then buying 2x1tb, so having one more slot would be nice especially looking at over 150gb games 😒
Idk if there is even a point in a ps5 pro though at least for this generation. They haven’t even taken advantage of the 8k support yet on this console at least with the ps4 pro and xbox one x they were made to be premium for the 4K experience. Now not so much
I think I can actually speak to the audience that would consider upgrading to the disc drive version later on. When I pre-ordered my console during the pandemic, the absolute most I could afford was $400. Now that I have more money and no PS4 or Blu-ray player, I wouldn't mind spending a little bit extra, even if that puts me over and the Blu-ray drive is sneaking Sony a bigger profit. Because that's still cheaper than, at this point, trading in my Digital console for a disc console.
What I like about having a detachable disc drive is that if something happens to the disc drive, I can easily replace it on my own. The initial pair requiring internet is not a big deal either honestly. Also if I want to take it somewhere with me with some digital games, I detach it and only carry a digital version which is cool. But yea pointless cause I'm not gonna get the new one anyway lol
I’m not some kind of boomer I’m 19 but what’s the point in having a disc drive that requires internet the whole point of a disc drive was because you didn’t need it to play the games nowadays almost everyone has internet so it’s not a big deal but it just seems stupid it doesn’t affect me cause I normally buy digital games anyway but I’m glad I bought the original ps5 last year
Ps5 slim is not for existing users it’s for new users so kinda makes sense to me, there is also no price different here in Europe so I feel it’s a no brainer to get new version over old
For anyone doubting: If you are strictly, absolutely refusing physical media in all shapes and forms, fine, then get the digital version. If you're open to buying games on disc or have an interest in bluray, get that disc drive. Even movie watchers that think "everything is on streaming": it is not, and the quality is oftentimes very noticeably worse than playing from disc. Netflix streams with bitrates between 1 and 20 Mbps for their 4K whereas a bluray disc that isn't even 4K but 1080 streams on average 25 Mbps. A UHD plays on average 50 Mbps. Now you tell me you don't have any interest in physical media.
To be fair @Matt I don't remember Sony ever marketing it as a Slim or even mention the word slim, only the consumers have referred to it as such, so you're technically not wrong in saying there wasn't going to be a PS5 Slim.
Problem is , it uses the same chip as the large latest revision , so no cooling , no noise improvements , still uses Liquid Metal which will dry up and is an issue , and at the end of the day it really doesn’t take up that much less space in the grand scheme of things its sort of pointless
Honestly im still a disc guy. Unless its one of those games like fort or among. I like to have a physical copy while i can cuz it does feel like itll be gone soon. I love opening spiderman 2 or this fri cod. i have to wait till after work but its just the process and i like feeling of waiting and then stopping by bestbuy to pick it up n go home. Reminds me of the old times aswell so nostalgia 😂 even for my switch i got all zeldas n pokemon on the little baby cartridge idn it feels cool to have something from the game n open it.
the disk drive is a big upgrade. I have ran into 2 ps5s that have disk drives but dont work and putting in $150+ to replace is too much compared to replacing it on the used market for $50 down the line
When you see how a bit of the heatsink is just going to the top for no obvious reason, pretty sure this console could be half the size. I prefer my launch PS5 all the way.
But I also think that Xbox is getting to the point where one day they’re not gonna have a consul they’re just gonna have all their games playable on any device you have with game pass and that will be awesome
@@Arranc49 so after three years, we’re just supposed to believe everyone who wants a PS5 is going to have one because there’s no more chip shortage. Nothing to do with distribution? Or the fact that everyone was reselling them?
@ashepanda4504 I don't think you realise how much a pandemic plus shortages affect the production of things and how long it takes to get back up to speed! And yes, it has taken 3 years to get things back on track! Not just consoles but many other businesses have taken years to get back to where they need to be!
@@Arranc49 then we will see if Sony can keep their promises or if they let us down like always. And yes, businesses take a while to come back but Sony itself. It’s not just any company now is it. What if they just want to get rid of those remaining pieces of the 1200 model and sell it in the fisrt shipment of PS5 Slim. And then later on, they upgrade it secretly and silently as they did earlier.
What if sony intentionally raising the price of PS5 Slim so you go and hurry to buy the old PS5. That way they sell as much as possible. If they make the PS5 Slim a good deal, everyone will wait. But they don't want that, thats why they increase the price
Wish I had 1 to take from room to room. Not sure why so many are crying, especially if you have 1. Newcomers get a PS5 at $450 that they can upgrade & $80 is a perfect holiday gift range so you can technically get it for free if somebody loves you. Replaceable drive is a nice touch
I still think that the PS2 slim is the best slim version, followed up by the 360 Slim. The PS2 slim was the true definition of a slim version (massively smaller than the original PS2)
But the PS2 Slim was unable to play a good few games made for the PS2, its own library. Like Initial D and the games that need a HDD for caching. So the PS3 Slim was really the best slimline PlayStation.

It's nice to see other countries talking about the absurd that is the price increase here in Brazil, but it's worse. First of, Xbox Brazil is commanded by Xbox Mexico. Ater the price increase and customers backlash, was no response from Xbox Brazil or Mexico about this. And worse: media and reporters who received an Xbox Series S for evaluation has to return their consoles.
If anything, you are getting this one for the slight increase in storage space. I got my disc version last year and i've already added an SSD.... I'm good for a while.
5:40 Nope, you are 100% wrong. It 'WOULD' have been cheaper 1-3 years ago, however due to certain things happening in the world right now, it is actually significantly more expensive to manufacture. Prices are not going up 'just because' they feel like it. They're going up because the materials used to make things are nearly impossible to acquire right now.
Even Apple isn't raising prices, and they'd milk us for every penny we have. Nintendo isn't, PC tech is going down in price, the same tech they also use in tablets, laptops and smartphones isn't going up. Only Sony is doing that. Xbox went up in Brazil due to taxes and import fees, but they brought it back down again. So even they fixed it.
If u have any working ps5, u don’t need another one. Unless you want it for another location. I usually wait for the slim PlayStation model, I have 2-4 in slim, and love them, and still play them. My os5 is my main game system, and I prefer disc games.
Starfield was the proof Xbox was looking for. Starfield sold 100 million copies worldwide on PC. That's not including Xbox console sales. PC is a much larger market.
To me this ps5 slim model is almost like a second launch of the ps5, it's not for the benefit of existing users, it is created to A. Cut down manufacturing cost of the console and B. give a reason for people who doesn't own a ps5 yet to buy one now as it is now 'slimmer' and has a slightly bigger storage. Sony obviously wants to make more profit off of each console sold in this particular redesign.
7:25 Phil Spencer has already stated that they actually lose money when selling their consoles, but they more than profit from the amount of gamepass subscribers there are
I have the PS5 1100. I might consider upgrading mine to the PS5 1200 or PS5 Slim. Mine Seems to overheat from time to time, even after cleaning it once a week. It happen right after the warranty expired. But having to Pay 549 euro is quite a lot of money, and I'd probably not be able to sell my current PS5 because of it being defective.
I think it's time to get it disassembled and clean the fan, heatsink and the power supply intake. That would fix the overheating issue that you're facing (if you have actually disassembled the console before, and it's still overheating, that's bad).

The price hike for the digital counsole is sony subsidizing the redesign cost. You get almost 20% more memory and a more modular form connection factor. It also allows ps5 digital users to change their minds later. It also is a being lifeline thrown to physical media. The disc drive could be particularly helpful in the future if Sony adds ps1-ps3 backward compatibility later. In a world where everything is getting more expensive, they had to tax a lil more somewhere. That detachable drive architecture also opens the possibility of sony adding other peripheral compatibility for that drive port.
1. Backwards compatibility isn’t happening. 2. It’s cheaper to make; just over 100 gigabytes extra doesn’t justify an extra 50 considering you can buy 1TB for 50 now. 3. They aren’t using that disc drive slot for anything else. The OG model can’t just be forgotten about.
Imma be honest the only reason ppl have gotten the dice drive is because they don’t wanna spend 70 dollars on the digital version if they could send 60 in a store and also you can use older games from ps4 that aren’t in the PlayStation store
I would never buy a PS5 slim. Much better off getting the original disc model. Shame that Sony is cutting production costs but still charging more for the slim digital. The fact that you need a Internet connection to verify the disc drive on the slim is a huge mistake by Sony. Sony is becoming more and more anti consumer.
Not really it's just a one time verification process to make it compatible with the system, a requirement when you consider it will be a standalone piece of hardware as well
Well the idea of getting the chonkier PS5 sounds great, especially if there are deals. However the catch is that almost anywhere you look, they’re being sold out like hot cakes. Especially the digital version, currently both consoles are unavailable on PS Direct. All models will eventually be replaced with the slim versions.
Guys about the prices, here in Colombia no matter what console you purchase you're gonna pay 6 or 7 times more, believe or not, be it ps, Xbox or Nintendo, even laptops and don't mention the iPhone or any other apple product, in South américa is where they big companies make the real money so that increase in the price in Brazil is something we live everyday all the time no matter if is new generation or previews. And in Colombia I don't know why but the ps is more expensive than the Xbox.
If they had brought it out at a reduced price they would have had plenty of guaranteed sales. Not a console gamer, but I would have got one. But charging more is not just bad, it's insulting.
And I don’t think PlayStation is bad at all. I love the games on PlayStation. I just like the Xbox controller is just a better controller in every way than the PlayStation controller if PlayStation could make a controller like an Xbox that would be so amazing
It is only a $50 increase in the states though. Everywhere else it was always $450.00 for the digital. Americans always thinking they are the only currency

It also allows ps5 digital users to change their minds later. It also is a being lifeline thrown to physical media. The disc drive could be particularly helpful in the future if Sony adds ps1-ps3 backward compatibility later.
but no stand?
@@craiglamb9029That’s never gonna happen.
Different times man. There’s huge inflation from 2020 to 2023.
It's cute how you think ps4 slim was better than og ps4.
It would be nice if that port from the slim could be used for different accessories or at least as additional storage.
You can add additional ssd memory storage
@@SteddiFLoIl look it up more but thank I didn’t know this
it has the standard nvme like the ps5 had, but it would be nice if you could get one more there, like at leat here 1tb nvmes are the best priced, if you're looking at 2 tb here it costs more then buying 2x1tb, so having one more slot would be nice especially looking at over 150gb games 😒
@@SteddiFLo just like the original PS5, and it's easier to open.
Sony making something that's cheaper to make more expensive to the consumer? Wow would've never seem that coming... (sarcasm)
✅yessssss. we're waiting for the unboxing and teardown ,Austin !!!
Linus already did a teardown
yes i've seen it. thanks for sharing✌@@shockwavepr
Haven't bought a PS5 yet, will be waiting for the rumored *PS5 Pro* coming next year. :P
Idk if there is even a point in a ps5 pro though at least for this generation. They haven’t even taken advantage of the 8k support yet on this console at least with the ps4 pro and xbox one x they were made to be premium for the 4K experience. Now not so much
Physical media is a niche? Uh, no.
2:52........THE DISK VERSION IS NOT MORE EXPENSIVE!!!!
its only the digital version that they bumped up the price on.
What if you don't have a PS5. Why do these reviews never talk about people who dont have one yet?
I think I can actually speak to the audience that would consider upgrading to the disc drive version later on.
When I pre-ordered my console during the pandemic, the absolute most I could afford was $400. Now that I have more money and no PS4 or Blu-ray player, I wouldn't mind spending a little bit extra, even if that puts me over and the Blu-ray drive is sneaking Sony a bigger profit. Because that's still cheaper than, at this point, trading in my Digital console for a disc console.
They're raising the price because they have no competition. Microsoft gave up
You guys are always fun to watch!! Have a nice day my brothas!!!
Now that the slim is out of the way, I can't wait for the endless speculation/ leaks videos about the PS pro/6 for the next 3 years
What I like about having a detachable disc drive is that if something happens to the disc drive, I can easily replace it on my own. The initial pair requiring internet is not a big deal either honestly.
Also if I want to take it somewhere with me with some digital games, I detach it and only carry a digital version which is cool. But yea pointless cause I'm not gonna get the new one anyway lol
I’m not some kind of boomer I’m 19 but what’s the point in having a disc drive that requires internet the whole point of a disc drive was because you didn’t need it to play the games nowadays almost everyone has internet so it’s not a big deal but it just seems stupid it doesn’t affect me cause I normally buy digital games anyway but I’m glad I bought the original ps5 last year
got the slim w spiderman on sale for 500 flat, tbh i think thats a win🤷♂️
I love just listening to the video you guy ho in depth with these things
To be fair @Matt I don't remember Sony ever marketing it as a Slim or even mention the word slim, only the consumers have referred to it as such, so you're technically not wrong in saying there wasn't going to be a PS5 Slim.
I just watched your short on the fan version 😂
Problem is , it uses the same chip as the large latest revision , so no cooling , no noise improvements , still uses Liquid Metal which will dry up and is an issue , and at the end of the day it really doesn’t take up that much less space in the grand scheme of things its sort of pointless
The slim is probably worse for cooling and noise cause they cut down the heat sink, made the fan smaller etc
@@robertofranco4515 does anyone have proof of this yet? trying to decide which one to buy haha
Good man I'm with you on that one 👍
This is going to be my final Sony device.
the disk drive is a big upgrade. I have ran into 2 ps5s that have disk drives but dont work and putting in $150+ to replace is too much compared to replacing it on the used market for $50 down the line
I do not trust Sony with digital stuff. I will ALWAYS recommend getting the one with the disc drive.
When you see how a bit of the heatsink is just going to the top for no obvious reason, pretty sure this console could be half the size.
I prefer my launch PS5 all the way.
But in Brazil every tech is really expensive because high imports charge and taxes right?
But I also think that Xbox is getting to the point where one day they’re not gonna have a consul they’re just gonna have all their games playable on any device you have with game pass and that will be awesome
Walmart is doing a black friday deal that you can get Fat PS5 + Spiderman 2 for 499. Gonna get that instead.
What about bestbuy?
They were selling PS5 at a loss and just recently broke even... Sure they are a bit more expensive but meh, I'd still get it _🤷♂️_
Sony could barely keep up with keeping the original in stock, how do they except this to be any different than?
Umm there's no chip shortage this time around for starters 🤪
Also, they weren’t stopping anyone who was buying them and reselling them for three times the price I like how you ignore that also don’t get so angry it’s just comments.
@ashepanda4504 the reselling at 3 times the price is the scalpers not sony! And the people who buy them are desperate and again not sonys problem.
Disk version is also good for playing the ps4 disks as well. I got the slim w/disk as it will also be my primary 4k UHD machine also
PS Plus is ridiculously expensive now. I haven’t really used it in over a year
Xbox went up in price in Canada also not just ps5
Fact these guys said disc drive is not needed and we should all do digital so we're forced to not be able to sell games and trade with friends says they are clueless And they say phrases "go for it" means they know their opinion is complete thrash Digital gaming IS ONLY MEANT FOR THEIR PROFIT
Dude really thought there wouldn't be a PS5 slim?!? The standard PS5 is ENORMOUS!
It was the largest PlayStation Console Sony ever made!
I am so happy that Dave2d and Linus did the teardown
Personally, ive been waiting for the slim...they realized it still didnt fit my unit. So i bought a new unit, but now i actually like the look of the slim better. (digital one, waiting for that one in canada no idea when its supposed to drop here though

@@mdmazing183 Yea Worldwide release date
It's nice to see other countries talking about the absurd that is the price increase here in Brazil, but it's worse.
First of, Xbox Brazil is commanded by Xbox Mexico.
Ater the price increase and customers backlash, was no response from Xbox Brazil or Mexico about this.
And worse: media and reporters who received an Xbox Series S for evaluation has to return their consoles.
Shoud i worry about now having the slim version but having the pS5 og Gen 3 version
The slim model has less phases too soo that's alone a downgrade
I want one without the plastic shell.. should be all metal after that shielding layer
Metal casing ? It would conduct heat more.
Does the PS5 slim have DRM for the detachable disk drive or is it a one time installation?
“50 dollars is 50 dollars.” I see what you did there.
7:25 Phil Spencer has already stated that they actually lose money when selling their consoles, but they more than profit from the amount of gamepass subscribers there are
hello and thank you
Btw Microsoft reversed their Brazil price increase.
Why is the slim digital edition not out but the disc is?
So which ps5 to buy for the holidays??????
I’m pretty sure they wanted to put out the slim earlier but for some reason it got delayed and wanted to introduce some of their changes with the 1200
Are you guys SERIOUS ???? the 1000 series still cost $900 in my country.. im just gonna enjoy my PS4 slim longer..
@@yordyords I Don't want to break anything. So I'm not opening it. Gonna order a new instead, because I'd probably end up breaking my system if I try to open it up.
Like I said, I clean it once week. Fan looked clean, and I use a vacuum on the holes at the back.
Maybe the Liquid metal must have moved to one side. I have my Console placed vertically.
@@DeadPhoenix86DP I have the 1100 model too but my is horizontal and have no problem. when I first had it vertical but dust kept felling in the vents so I clean and put it horizontal and barely any dust in the vents because it falls on the covers
@@flyjah3x_840 No room to place it horizontally.
I stand by Matt is correct saying there is no slim. It's replacing the current consoles, and it's not being marketed as the PS5 Slim. It is just a PS5. Smaller, yes. But I have a hard time officially calling it a "PS5 Slim"
That detachable drive architecture also opens the possibility of sony adding other peripheral compatibility for that drive port.
good point, the lost the excuse that the laser cant read cds and dvds for ps1 and ps2
Not really it's just a one time verification process to make it compatible with the system, a requirement when you consider it will be a standalone piece of hardware as well
So whts the argument for buying the old ps5 over the new one?
The extra usbc on the front might be useful with psvr2.
Here in the UK the Slim was the same price as the OG
A PS5 in South Africa is 760$😢R13700 in rands🙃
If they had brought it out at a reduced price they would have had plenty of guaranteed sales. Not a console gamer, but I would have got one. But charging more is not just bad, it's insulting.
As far as I know Brazil has always been way overpriced for consoles . That's why the megadrive is still one of the best selling consoles there.
And I don’t think PlayStation is bad at all. I love the games on PlayStation. I just like the Xbox controller is just a better controller in every way than the PlayStation controller if PlayStation could make a controller like an Xbox that would be so amazing
Can you still put the hard drive expansion in the slim
It's allright Matt we still love you even if Sony doesn't! ❤
It is only a $50 increase in the states though. Everywhere else it was always $450.00 for the digital. Americans always thinking they are the only currency
The slim….is….smaller….Not by much! And it will preform the same! That is why I want to buy it. I hate how big the old one is and I’m much more excited about the newer one. Dbrand plates are still a must though! I dont thing its ugly, the white just doesn’t look good in my living room.
I think the last time I’ve washed a movie dvd on my game console was on my OG Xbox
What if u trade in ur current ps5 towards the slim cause u want the bigger hard drive that 1tb ssd
Tell me you hate Sony without telling me
I do kind of wish valve would just make a home console i think with steam os valve could do something spectacular
Waiting for PS5 Pro tear down and im down with that
Austin would say that Xbox hasn’t changed the inside of there system
I think vertical stand will be included in the diskless version, there's no way that horizontal "stand" works for the diskless version... Thus the delay to show anything about the diskless version, only teardown and photos for the one with the disk as of now...
I feel like if that were the case, we would've known by now. Sony has been getting way too arrogant this generation
I’m thinking of getting the digital now and then upgrade later but who knows how long it’ll until it’s released
2 steps forward 3 steps back
I wish sony, microsoft and nintendo stuck what made them profitable while not being greedy at the same time like back in the 90s with the exception of the original xbox that came out in 2001. I wish all the corporations stuck to the things that benefited both the consumer and the corporations during there peak since it benefitted both the consumers and all the corporations. I miss the era of the 90s, I wish the modern era was more like the 90s era since everything was balanced.
When will the ps6 be released ?
What about the 10gbps USB-C ?.. I think they have a plan for it.
The price of the Xbox in Brazil is so high due to import tax this effects all systems as far as I know along with any imported goods
Should I get a ps5 or ps5 slim
I’m upgrading from a ps4 I bought in 2015. I really only play call of duty. I have seen a lot of hate on the new slimmer version. Should I go for slim or the original model?
The slim is better it has more storage than the original and it's smaller
Same i also have 2015 ps4 1tb standard fat model and want to upgrade but the problem is that where i live ps5 slim has not even launched yet 😔and i dont want the fat one as my room is small.
So...I haven't gotten one yet... my wife wants a PS5...Since we don't have one at all.. and she wants the disk drive... the slim would be okay?
