    I love how direct and open IU is in this: "I saw your eyes shake" "you didn't know what to call me when you showed up" "I felt closer to you after singing with you" it's an amazing strength to be able to call someone out in a way that makes you closer to them rather than farther. She takes him to a place of vulnerability by straightforwardly asckowledging emotional things or awkward things, but she does it in such a kind way as if it's not a big deal, and by using that approach it ends up being not a big deal at all. Very impressive.

    IU is a great artist and actress. She is really big in Korea and even in the industry longer than BTS. Each and every member of BTS admired IU as an artist from their pre-debut days. So, it's obvious Hobi was a little bit shy and nervous during this whole interview. But I love every bit of this interview.. it's so beautiful to see this two artists together 🥰🥰. I appreciate how you picked up on how 'private' Hobi is, considering he can be such a bright charismatic member of BTS. But I've also thought he's one of the most professional members, who does keep his public JHope BTS life separate from his personal HoSeok life. He shares the most content on Instagram and loves to work social media so well, but it's well crafted and curated. Jack in the Box songs were his most raw self-expression so far. I think overall Hobi radiates true kindness, caring and warmth. Sometimes his bright loud energy may be extra efforts he puts on for camera, but his caring comes across in so many ways in how he responds (and he's super fast responding to any of their social media posts) and treats his BTS members.

    IU is like a Korean Princess, she is multi talented, she sings and acts, but at the same time she is very humble and down to earth just like BTS, that's why she can connect with everyone very well, they have seen each other many times at different award shows, the boys have always watched her performances with admiration, but it is differnt to talk to her personally, it is almost like a dream come true, but she makes you feel very at ease, relaxed. Hobie felt that and it made him open up a bit more. She is super sweet and he is as well, it was such a cute interview and I loved every minute

    I have been basically watching BTS content almost daily for 6 years and it often hits me that: I don't really know them at all. Like BTS share sooo much and they make so much new content for us where they are always just themselfs and honest. But, they don't really talk about their personal life at all.
    The easiest subject where you can clearly see that is their home. There is literally only maybe one video of each of their homes where they lived for YEARS. And even that videos get released only by the time they have moved. For example Festa 2022. They lived in that dorm for YEARS, but we only saw it in one scene in 'Life goes on mv', and we saw that exact living room in Grammy announcment and in the Festa 2022 dinner, which showed us basically zero of their home. Like I am not saying they should show us their home or anything, but regular people post a pic of them chilling in their living room or cooking in their kitchen. But with BTS we rarely even get that. Even pictures of their dogs are super rare...
    So yeah. All BTS members are super private, while at the same time making us feel like they share everything

    • @maxpbeaumont
      @maxpbeaumont  2 роки тому +7

      It’s really interesting, isn’t it.

    • @BansheePurple
      @BansheePurple 2 роки тому +7

      I actually love the fact they don't share that much about some aspects of their private life because in that way fans and the general public can't interfere that much and it's harder for Sasaengs for example, to find their location and stuff when it's outside their work schedule so yeah.. when it comes to private life, BTS usually shares with army more about their own feelings and thoughts, I think that's why we feel that we know a lot about them but as persons and their bond with the other members but at the same time we don't know them it all outside that circle(?) lol
      We know very few details about their dating lives, their religious and political views, their past and present relationships, their sexual preference, their family, their friends and even their charity works that it's something that usually celebrities make public and BTS don't. Honestly, that makes me love them even more because they don't intend or really care to get attention and praises, they do it from the heart and that's it. Bangtan are humble kings 💜 Anyways, besides music, other content and interviews, they don't directly talk about these topics or they don't talk much in detail.
      Hopefully, it stays that way! It's amazing that they have managed to keep those things a secret considering how big they are. It's amazing too, how even if we don't know some basic thing about their private live, we feel connected to them, in certain way we know a lot of thing about them as human beings, their personalities, habits, struggles, funny events or sad and special moments with the members, friends and family, inside jokes, etc.. all of that make us feel really close and have a strong connection with BTS! Army doesn't really need to know the who are their friends, who are their exes, who they are dating and more to relate to them and have this bond. 💜

  • @eucalyptus6968
    @eucalyptus6968 2 роки тому +9

    I have so much to say after watching this! thank you for the reaction and analysis.
    first thing, as other commenters have pointed out, iu is an extremely established artist and actress and was in the industry for 5 years longer than bts has. iu is arguably bigger than bts in Korea and she is one of the biggest artists to come out of south Korea. almost all idols have huge respect for her. iu and j-hope haven't really met before this, but they are the perfect pairing as I find them to be so similar. they're both extremely professional and good at what they do. not just singing, songwriting, and producing (and acting too, for iu!) but it is their ability to carefully craft a marketable image for themselves that is so impressive. they are both ambitious, creative, and very business-minded. iu is definitely someone worth checking out, in terms of music and communication skills. regarding your comments about her being soft-spoken -she absolutely is, and talks very politely, but she is also very blunt (think yoongi). she tells things like they are and she is not afraid to call you out on something. i think she has that in common with bts.
    second thing, i'm so glad you said the comment about how j-hope is private because this is how i felt too. j-hope (along with jin, in my opinion) is one of the most private members of bts. they seem to like to put a distance between their stage persona and their personal life. as i said, j-hope is one of the most professional members of bts - he knows what he needs to do and how to do it. everything about his j-hope persona is perfectly crafted and executed. this is not to say he's being fake, but he's extremely detailed and intelligent in how he presents himself to the outside world (and that's a good thing! that's how he is able to retain his own character and to carry himself with such confidence) i often feel like a lot of armys misunderstand his persona (sunshine) to be his full self. i definitely think it is a part of him, but i also feel there's a lot he keeps to himself, and members have said he's a lot quieter and different off camera. i thoroughly believe that j-hope's kindness is the same as jung hoseok's kindness, though. there's a thing that j-hope is everyone's favourite member (among the members), and it's not hard to see why. he is a caring and calming presence, and he comes off as someone who is very strong and emotionally mature.
    this is a bit unrelated but it reminded me that i also think of jin as one of the most mature members of bts. a lot of armys joke about how he acts like the youngest when he is the oldest, but i truly feel like him being the oldest is so apparent. he can joke around when he wants to, but he is always looking out for his younger members (in multiple instances, i see him defending the members: in the recent festa where they announced their chapter 2, when members joked about v's album/mixtape taking years to make, jin said "I'm sure v has a plan", and when jungkook was talking and everyone kept complimenting him on how mature his vocabulary was, jin said "let jungkook speak"). in these instances, the members were not being mean or attacking each other in any way, but jin's responses let them know "don't worry, I'm on your side", to give the members a bit more confidence when speaking. i feel like this is a very older sibling thing to do. like when your parents are nagging at you about something, and your older sibling tells your parents, "don't worry, they know what they are doing". whenever the members need help with something, he steps in and tries to fill in the gaps of what's needed. in a society where age hierarchy really matters, jin was also able to put aside his pride to support rm as a leader, which is very mature of him. he is mature enough to understand that rm is the leader that bangtan needs, and that his role is to support the team and the leader from behind the scenes when necessary. for me, j-hope and jin are very interesting individuals because of the contrast between their stage persona and their real selves.

She is great at changing the interview into a dialog and honing into a nook and crafting the right direct question but without any warning that the person might put up barriers to defend themselves. One of the things that really stands out about Hobi's personality particularly in this interview is his more matriarchal upbringing, and I think it explains that blurry overlap between embarrassment and flattery that you talked about. Hobi has an older sister, and unless I'm mistaken, his dad is the only male member besides him in his immediate family, making it more matriarchal. I'm not sure if you or anyone else has noticed this, but guys who have older sisters and/or grow up in a family where there are are more women than men (sisters, aunts, grandmas, etc) tend to be warm, kind, tender, humble - qualities that are more motherly - more respectful, attentive, patient and a total gentlemen, while at the same time being more emotionally expressive, and in many cases, quite outgoing and spontaneous with their expressions while still being very humble about themselves. I notice that this doesn't tend to happen if the guy has younger sisters, but almost always happens with guys who have older sisters and more women in their family. I've met a few guys who were like this, and the common denominator was either having older sisters or growing up in a matriarchal family. These guys always pull out chairs and hold doors open for you without a second thought, and tend to be really attentive and affectionate.
    Seeing this video with Hobi made it clear to me right away of his more matriarchal gentlemen personality. I was struck by this particularly because I'm aware how patriarchal and hierarchial Korean society is, and how Hobi is so not like that. You can tell that Hobi's shyness, humility, discipline, positivity, warmth and outgoing expression is a result of this matriarchal upbringing, and it's extremely refreshing and attractive to watch. He's not shy to admit his fears nor that he's a coward, which is extremely rare for both a man AND an East Asian man. He's also not afraid to admit this infront of a woman, another very rare thing for an East Asian man (let's not forget this is IU, who is so iconic). His interaction with IU show how respectful, gentlemanly, friendly, comfortable and focused he is. Despite his respect for IU, he not once shows any sign of wanting to impress her by exaggerating his skills nor does he hold back on expressing his views, something that a man living in a patriarchal society would have difficulty with when interacting with a woman. This shows a great level of intellect, humility and roundedness that I found unique to men raised more by women than men. The other members of BTS are all great in their own way, but they don't have this quality that Hobi does, and this interview makes that so clear. I would love to be Hobi's friend, because I know that he would interact with me - a woman - and treat me not as a woman but truly as a person and human being. In our patriarchal society today, as a woman this is such an unburdening relief!
    Tom Hiddleston is another celebrity example of this matriarchal gentleman, since he grew up with two sisters.

    I love IU. She knows how famous and influential BTS is, but unlike so many other celebrities and interviews BTS has been on since they've become famous, she doesn't treat Hobi any different. She doesn't roll out the red carpet and keep showering his with flattery and celebrity status, but rather treats him as a professional with skills and thinking worthy of respect and warmth. She is an excellent, and I respect her even more than I already did.

    I love these analysis videos however I do feel like there's a cultural aspect of the communication with Korean people that doesnt translate accurately in the analysis which is completely understandable since we don't expect you to understand the depths of Korean culture right off the bat. but there is a very strong "must be polite and show good manners especially with anyone at least one year older than me" kind of mindset that's hammered into korean people's heads especially if they are famous because viewers and audience will absolutely slaughter them if they catch them slip a little. the age hierarchy is so big in Korean culture you'll see Korean kids at the early age of 4 or 5 be like "how old are you! I'm older than you!" in the playground its just so engrained in the culture. so the mindset of "I must be super polite and well mannered and show my respect so I'm not cancelled" is very much there majority of the time

    Thanks for this cool analysis Max! I thoroughly enjoyed it. You talked a little about shyness vs. flattery; don't they often go hand in hand? Like, what's the difference between a pure flattered response and a pure shy response? Isn't there considerable overlap? And what are the clear differences? I'm both fascinated and confused ;).

    • @maxpbeaumont
      @maxpbeaumont  2 роки тому +9

      So glad you enjoyed it! That's a good question, and I guess it depends on how you interpret the word "shy". I think some people talk about feeling "shy" when they're feeling embarrassed, uncomfortable, or nervous, even. Like I think you could feel "shy" when someone who feels intimidating walks into a room. You wouldn't feel flattered, or necessarily enamored with them, but you could feel shy (nervous,/uncomfortable).
      I think in this situation with j-hope, there's a bit of discomfort for him in getting praised (very slight) so he may get a bit "shy". I think there's generally just more "comfort" around a flattered response. They're not necessarily uncomfortable with the praise, but they appreciate it. I
      Anyway, I'm clearly still working this out lol. I hope this provided some help. I appreciate the thought-provoking question.

    • @annie4bananie
      @annie4bananie 2 роки тому +3

      @@maxpbeaumont thanks for thinking along.
      The example with the intimating person was very helpful. I guess you could say there is a more positive (flustered / cute / flattered) and a more negative form of shyness (anxious / nervous / tense) depending on whether it's a response to a positive or negative stimulus?
      As I was thinking about it some more, I also figured that reacting to praise with shyness probably depends on sociocultural values as well. Which basically means that shyness and flattery are related differently in Korean contexts versus, for example, in Canadian ones.

    • @maxpbeaumont
      @maxpbeaumont  2 роки тому +3

      Yes that’s a good point! It probably differs based on the culture you were raised in and/or a part of.
