God of War Ragnarök is an action-adventure video game developed by Santa Monica Studio and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. Released worldwide on November 9, 2022, for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, & PC it marks the first cross-generational release in the series. This is the ninth installment in the God of War series and serves as a direct sequel to the critically acclaimed God of War (2018).
Set in the world of Norse mythology, Ragnarök builds upon the narrative and gameplay of its predecessor, offering an expanded focus on exploration and open-world elements. Players can now traverse all nine realms of Norse mythology, including new additions such as Svartalfheim, the industrious home of the Dwarves; Vanaheim, the lush domain of the Vanir gods; and Asgard, the majestic realm of the Æsir gods. Familiar realms such as Midgard, Alfheim, Helheim, and Niflheim return, each with new areas and deeper storytelling elements.
The story takes place three years after the events of the previous game, as Fimbulwinter-the harsh, three-year winter that precedes Ragnarök-draws to a close. Kratos and his teenage son, Atreus, must navigate the realms to uncover the truth about Atreus' identity as Loki and find a way to prevent the apocalyptic events of Ragnarök. Along the way, they encounter allies such as Týr, the Norse God of War, and face powerful foes like Thor, the Norse God of Thunder.
