Jeff always got crapped on for “trying to copy the Beatles”. Dude never got the credit he deserves...thank you Jayy for putting a spotlight on Jeff and ELO

In retrospect, he really only ever borrowed from the mid-period Beatles, at that. And honestly, I wish The Beatles themselves had done more with that sound, so I'm glad Jeff Lynne picked up where "I Am the Walrus" and "Strawberry Fields Forever" left off. But it's also hard to hear the overt connection between ELO and The Beatles now, 35-50 years later. It's just orchestrated, melodic rock.

Don't fret Eddie, if you haven't heard, Jeff Lynne is a legend who gets mad respect from many critics and fans of music, but everyone can't be as popular as The Beatles, Michael Jackson or The King.

there's two other songs that are excellent which are: All Over The World and Living Thing. Enjoy.
Thanks for being Brave enough to listen to these "Classic" Rock Tunes. Many of us growing up in that Era learned our Dance Moves from American Bandstand and Soul Train.
If you want something else from that time frame: Herb Albert and the Tijuana Brass. The song is called Rise. Very popular back in the late 1970s.
For something more current- Check out Angelina Jordan and Brian Justin Crum. Both were contestants on AGT. You will be witnessing the birth of "New Legendary Performers".

Jeff Lynne has explained that he is singing a made-up word, "Grooss", which some have suggested sounds like the German expression "Gruß," meaning "greeting." Lynne has explained that originally he did not realize the meaning of the syllable, and he just used it as a temporary placekeeper to fill a gap in the lyrics, but upon learning the German meaning he decided to leave it in. After the song's release, so many people had misinterpreted the word as "Bruce" that Lynne actually began to sing the word as "Bruce" for fun at live shows. ELO engineer Reinhold Mack remembers the term differently, stating that Lynne was actually singing "Bruce" as a joke in advance of an Australian tour "referring to how many Australian guys are called Bruce

The singer Jeff Lynne is DEFINITELY influenced by The Beatles...he was in side project Traveling Wilburys with George Harrison in the late 80s/early 90. But? ELO’s music is also innovative and well played. Jeff toured with a mostly new ELO band in 2018...was lucky enough to see the Houston show. His voice is still strong. My favorite ELO song is Can’t Get It Out of My Head.

What you might have been missing is this Electric Light Orchestra song was the “orchestra”. This is the first song to not include a string section as heard as part of every previously recorded ELO song.
There is a reason for strings to not be included, but it’s a story for another time. ;)

Memories! Germany, in the country. Late 1970s-early 1980s. The first really steadfast girlfriend. She always wanted to dance at the weekends and in the country there always played bands to dance that covered the current hits. (was definitely not entirely legal, but nobody cared). "Don't Bring Me Down" was part of the repertoire of every dance band at the time. It always hurt my prog rock soul a bit back then, but as a memory it's super nice.

This song and “Does your Mother know” by ABBA were on repeat! Good ole days- we were in elementary school! Then I remember getting an official disco ball at around 5th grade- (plugged in kind- couldn’t hang from the ceiling) but I loved it still! you couldn’t tell me nothin then! Ugh! I’m old! 😅 💞✌️

As far as the missing element, I think the ELO songs you have done previously are from their earlier years when they still used the name Electric Light Orchestra and had an additional 3 members who played violin cello and horns. While the later stuff is still great you do hear a difference between the old stuff and the later stuff.

This was the first ELO song without the bands string section playing or any of Louis Clark's string arrangements, the writing was on already the wall for Mik Kaminski (Violin), Hugh McDowell (Cello) and Melvyn Gale (Cello). There were no string arrangements on any of the 1981 "Time" album. R.I.P. Kelly Groucutt, Hugh McDowell and Louis Clark.

Great reaction! As far as "missing instruments", good call! This *is* a pretty straightforward Rock-style song (with some synth flourishes and a compressed beat that felt like a drum machine from a few years later). But ELO usually has LOTS of strings (violins, violas, cellos, double bass), among other orchestral flourishes (brass sections, timpanis, glockenspiels) though. That's where the whole "Orchestra" thing in their name comes from. They had a butt-ton of huge hits in the 70s (and even into the 80s), and a few of them were a bit more straightforward like this instead of using the Orchestral Rock approach. They had twenty US Top40 hits between 1972-86 (fifteen Top10 hits in their native UK), so they had a lot of real classics. I think you need to do one of their many dreamy ballads next. I recommend "Telephone Line" (1977/US#7, UK#8). It's a mid-tempo ballad with soulful vocals, weird synths and effects, swooping orchestral sections, and a fun lyrical concept.
