So cool David! Loved your video. The girls are adorable! I haven’t ever done any wood working but have often wanted to build furniture. I mostly refinish old pieces or paint them and make them look pretty again. I could paint your chairs for you. Haha
My family had two of these chairs for camping when I was growing up back in the early to mid 80s. We were told then that the design was old. Possibly well over 100 years old as we were using them for pre 1840s reenacting.
There are a lot of designs - such as that one - that I'd have to say are in the public domain based on how frequently and likely they are made and used by woodworkers the world over. My mother got a chair just like that when I was in elementary school twenty years ago at a reenactment. I think the design itself is just really old and they just both wrote up some plans for a chair that's been around for hundred years.
I have been part of a historical reenactment group and for our events we couldn’t have any modern looking chairs in our camp. A lot of people had chairs that looked exactly like that. I started doing that in 1990 so that design is at least 35 years old.
hey buddy, i love your videos and i am watching for month your channel. Its always a pleasure. A little story behind it and easy to watch. Keep it up that way. Best regards from germany :)
I made a couple of those in '82 so my wife and I could use them when canoe camping. A guy I worked with had a couple made by his grandfather and he let me borrow one for a weekend to get dimensions. They were originally made with straight stiles/legs so when 'folded' the chair would lay flat in a canoe. You could put your tent and sleeping bags on them, keeping them out of the water that always finds its way into canoe bottoms. Then use them to sit around the camp site at night. While our canoe was sold when we could no longer lift them onto the roof of the van the chairs are still fine.
I had already bought her plans last year, before I knew that Jay had done a similar video first. I've watched both, I find April's version is easier and better. I still have yet to make the chair.
I still may buy her plans. It's everybody's favorite chair, but I don't love the geometry of mine. I may build a bunch to go around the fire pit, or maybe Adirondack chairs. Can't decide.

They carry a lot of stuff, and they were able to get me parts I needed to fix my Craftsman jointer that was built in 1981, so I'm guessing they would have the parts you need.
That would be a great help, Mark! I found a replacement on Ebay for about $100, but it wasn't worth it to me. And yes, all the boots in the house are her boots apparently.

April Wlikerson is a awesome content creator as well as many others. I watch content creators with small shops because I could relate to them. Then what happens? Their channel blows up and they start getting sponsorships, getting all the fancy and expensive tools, and of course....a much bigger workshop. Now, I can no longer relate to these content creators, because they no longer have to be limited by their shop size, tools, and whatnot's. Please, don't get me wrong. It is awesome they were able to grow their channel and I wish all of them much continued success. However again, I can no longer relate to them. Also, now they portray a celerity status demeanor (which is sad). I still watch some of them now and then if it is of interest to me and/or I can relate to the subject matter. Go back and watch some earlier videos of your favorite content creator, and compare to them to their most recent videos. Again, I do wish them all much success. I have been told if you don't like what you see on TV....Change the channel. Which I do. By the the way....I enjoyed your video. You have a good sense of humor and you make your videos interesting. (Fist time to you channel)👍
Haven't seen those chairs until this video, but on a similar vein, there's a bunch of videos by different creators about building a full sized workbench that can fold up and be stored on a wall. I saw one guy do it, and then youtube recommended a few others with what was almost identical designs. So either they all nick designs off each other or someone comes up with these designs for the youtubers to make it and say that it was theirs. Ghost designing maybe?
There's very little that's actually new anymore. I've been rewatching a lot of New Yankee Workshop lately, and hadn't realized how many of our "tips and tricks" are actually Norm's.
I can't recall if Jay or April was asked (in the comments) about it, and whichever one confirmed that they are old friends (they, along with Nick Ferry, used to do a podcast together, and did some projects together), and confirmed there's no hard feelings and no one is feeling slighted.
words. math. stuff. Little Bit is the best... so dramatic as she should be! Also, nice form from both girls using the drill. April better watch out for those two.
I'm poor too! After your channel bombs, can I borrow your camera equiptment so I can give it a go? You can just run it to me in Lake Worth ;) ... Keep it up. Huge fan
🤣I can relate to the table saw! My Sears-special got hit by a car. (My daughter drove into the woodshop during driver's ed). It's a little bent but is ok for cutting stuff you don't care about gluing up. Then I acquired a used Delta contractors saw - from the dark ages. I discovered (or should I say my son discovered) quickly that there were NO safety features on this puppy. I had to clean the rust and paint off it but it cuts a lot truer. It is heavier than all get-out and with no wheels, it doesn't go very far, very often. A new saw? Now that would be nice!
Your table saw journey is a lot like mine. That "new" Craftsman saw has some big issues, including a bent arbor on the motor, but it's better than what I was using. Someday I'll upgrade.
That means so much to me. Thank you. Thank you for taking the time to watch, consider, and offer a thoughtful response. Admittedly, I'm learning how to create valuable content, and there's a lot more I don't know than what I do. Maybe I'll see you down the road. Until then, as you say, cheers!
I think the first time I saw this chair designs was about the time you bought your death trap that died in this video. There was no UA-cam and the WWW was pretty new. I saw it in a woodworking magazine. There really are not many new ideas I’d woodworking.
i just wanna know...where'd you get that bangin' "Girl Dad" hat?...as a girl dad of 2, myself, that would be an AWESOME addition!!...enjoying your vids, my "friend" (quotes only 'cause i've never ACTUALLY met you)
I wish I could see that TV show she did with Tim Allen and Richard Karnes, but I'd have to subscribe to another premium service for it. I bought the hat on Amazon. Search for "Girl Dad Daughter Embroidered Richardson 112 Trucker Cap Hat" and it should pop right up!
never let a child flip the breaker for the first time. for real, professional electricians who are more safety conscious usually stand to the side and look away when a breaker is turned on for the first time. there is always a chance of a life changing explosion. even if it is a tiny chance.
You and her are both awesome woodworkers. I see a lot of hate for her and Tamar both on various social media platforms, and I don’t get it. One person called one of them woodshop Barbie and a hack. I mean the barbie part was funny lol, but them being a hack is just stupid.
She's a MUCH better woodworker than I am. I hope you saw the end of the video when I gushed about how great she is. I've watched her since she first started almost ten years ago, and have tremendous respect for her. I don't poke fun at any creator I don't love.
@@worstworkshop yes sir I absolutely watched it all. My apologies if you thought I was trying to imply anything. But I’m the same way. I tell my kids that if I didn’t pick on them, they’d think I didn’t love them any more. 😂
May I, with full respect, kindly ask you to upgrade your table saw with a riving knive? You are much to valuable for the workers community to stop yourself eventually with a piece of wook shooting back into your stomach...
@@worstworkshop That is the solution I am pursuing with my old Craftsman saw. Was never happy it didn't have a riving knife (don't believe it even has that as an option to easily mount one), but adding a splitter to a zero clearance plate should do the trick. Micro Jig has one, Kreg does too I believe.
My 2 cents if they matter, is that it’s not about stealing. I guess if you’re creating content that’s a different story. But as far as making something to sell? They don’t live in my town. So if I use either one, technically I’m stealing too. But they aren’t here. And why put it on UA-cam if you aren’t expecting people to be “inspired”?
There is nothing amazing about her other than she spent money on tools she doesn't know how to use properly😅 I can and have designed and built this. The one thing all these youtube "Woodworkers" are missing is BASIC MATH SKILLS! Show me how to build a basic tapered cup with only the table saw, glue and some sandpaper and have it not fall apart than we will talk about saying youtuber "Woodworkers" are actual 1st year carpenters
You're not wrong. There are actually some amazing woodworkers on UA-cam, but most of them don't have big channels, because they're not very good at making videos. April is a content creator first, a businesswoman second, and a woodworker third. But it's also interesting to see how much better she's gotten over the years. At first, she really wasn't any good at all. She's gotten much better.
@@worstworkshop any of the "bigger" channels that climb fast and they are only "bigger" because of the views they have being "content" based and not actual skill base, is mostly women because it is a male based audience viewing this "content". The actual good woodworkers that know what they are doing and have actual skill and the most important is knowledge of the subject matter are the smaller and older channels. This DIY stuff in terms of woodworking is a mockery of actual skilled tradesman that have real honed skills everywhere on this planet. These DIY woodworking channels are exactly why good skilled carpenters say no to can you fix my failed attemtps. Thus the birth of the unskilled handyman

Of course! I actually have nothing but good things to say about both these creators, whom I've followed forever. Watch the video and you'll see. The stealing thing is just a joke, and clear it all up at the end of the video. FYI, the nesting chair goes back at least a hundred years. That's part of what made it funny to me.
I know exactly what you mean. I've watched so many of those channels blow up. Thanks for watching, and I hope to see you around for future videos!
My sentiments exactly. Couldn't have said it better. I like her older stuff. But now it's like watching an infomercial.
this is like a gonzo woodworking video, if you get the hunter thompson reference lol
Way less drugs though.
Oh yeah. Jay features her on his website, and April is one of the kindest makers on UA-cam. I haven't heard their podcast though.
@@worstworkshop it was years and years ago. Probably hard to find these days, but I concur :)
words. math. stuff. Little Bit is the best... so dramatic as she should be! Also, nice form from both girls using the drill. April better watch out for those two.
She's a character, for sure. They both are. Princess is sometimes too cool to let everybody see it right now. It's a phase.
This design, like many others, predates both of them. Literally, it came out of a Popular Mechanics, early sixties, and probably predated that.
I know it's an old design, but hadn't heard it was in Popular Mechanics! Thanks for watching.
I'm poor too! After your channel bombs, can I borrow your camera equiptment so I can give it a go? You can just run it to me in Lake Worth ;) ... Keep it up. Huge fan
I can't tell if you're trolling with sarcasm or just trying to be funny, but either way, thanks for your comment!
@@worstworkshop The latter. My attempt at humor. Genuine fan & wish genuine success. Apologies that was so unclear.
Check out viking star gamer chair easy build for the girls only 2 boards
Oh yeah! My friends at Friday Workshop built one of those. I've always wanted to do one.
Ok I’ve decided I like your narrative style so much ing gonna have to steal your brain for my own channels videos 😂
I consider that a great compliment! Thank you.
@@worstworkshop it was definitely a compliment 100%
That intro! 😂
Glad you got a kick out of that!
That kind of design has been around for years probably well before April or Jay were even born.
I figured it was, but had trouble finding any history of it. Another viewer recalled one from over forty years ago. Do you know anything about them?
@@worstworkshop Id imagine they would have been used on things like cruise liners and old movie theaters back in the twenty's
Just built several of these with plans from Black Creek....
.....and did a serious LOL at Death trap. My 20+ y/o Delta died 2 weeks ago.
I guess I missed the point of the video , I wish you all the best but I am not sure I wanna take the trip with ya . Cheers
That means so much to me. Thank you. Thank you for taking the time to watch, consider, and offer a thoughtful response. Admittedly, I'm learning how to create valuable content, and there's a lot more I don't know than what I do. Maybe I'll see you down the road. Until then, as you say, cheers!
My dad built that same style chair April and Jay built way back in 1980 so does that mean they stole that chair design from my dad?
Obviously! Lawsuit in order.
I think the first time I saw this chair designs was about the time you bought your death trap that died in this video. There was no UA-cam and the WWW was pretty new. I saw it in a woodworking magazine. There really are not many new ideas I’d woodworking.
So true. Except now there's epoxy river tables. Unfortunately.
Comedy gold
Thanks!!
The electric? The table saw? I all could think was: what would Norm say.
Oh man. As much as it would be a dream to meet him one day, I dread to think what he'd say about all this!
@@worstworkshop Haha. Saw him at a home and garden show here in Rochester, NY 30 years ago or so when he gave a lecture. Standing room only.
i just wanna know...where'd you get that bangin' "Girl Dad" hat?...as a girl dad of 2, myself, that would be an AWESOME addition!!...enjoying your vids, my "friend" (quotes only 'cause i've never ACTUALLY met you)
& i agree...April is quite the "maker". & if you haven't already checked out her work, then...well, just DAMN!!
15a? those are rookie numbers. you gotta up them numbers....
never let a child flip the breaker for the first time. for real, professional electricians who are more safety conscious usually stand to the side and look away when a breaker is turned on for the first time.
there is always a chance of a life changing explosion. even if it is a tiny chance.
You're right. I had tested it before she came out to turn it on. My tests were just "unofficial."
that design has ben around long before they were both born. Guilty ! 2 counts
That's what I hear! I tried to find a history of it, but all I can find out is that it seems to go back at least forty years.
They probably both lifted the design from a 50 year old magazine.
Oh, for sure. It's commonly called a "nesting chair," and it's a really old design. Thanks for watching!
Sorry mentioned stargazing chair
Yep. I'm familiar with it.
You and her are both awesome woodworkers. I see a lot of hate for her and Tamar both on various social media platforms, and I don’t get it. One person called one of them woodshop Barbie
and a hack.
@@Griffinwoodworks , no need! You sound like a dad after my own heart.
April got more views, a year later
Oldest video I can find on UA-cam, not that old... ua-cam.com/video/IjZcvWozfMc/v-deo.html
Absolutely. I've heard stories of these chairs that are at least fifty years old.
May I, with full respect, kindly ask you to upgrade your table saw with a riving knive? You are much to valuable for the workers community to stop yourself eventually with a piece of wook shooting back into your stomach...
You absolutely may! And thank you. I'm going to be adding splitters to a zero cut insert as soon as I get the chance.
@@worstworkshop 🙂
My 2 cents if they matter, is that it’s not about stealing. I guess if you’re creating content that’s a different story. But as far as making something to sell? They don’t live in my town. So if I use either one, technically I’m stealing too. But they aren’t here. And why put it on UA-cam if you aren’t expecting people to be “inspired”?
Yep. I was just poking fun at them. The design predates both of them anyway, and from what I understand, they're good friends.
Ps every time i check out april my wife hits me in the back of the head..
Haha! My wife and I have an understanding about her.
She frequently copies other peoples ideas and designs, and so do a lot of other youtubers, you can count the ones producing original stuff out of hundrrds of channels on two hands..
Everyone does, me included.
You frequently scare the shit out of me watching you use the table saw...
Shows are funny.... I would just rather not see your dismemberment on UA-cam 😊
Me too, Steve! I really need a better saw.
If two people have the same idea it's coincidence . I'm sorry you have nothing more better to do .how about being a little more creative yourself .
Of course! I actually have nothing but good things to say about both these creators, whom I've followed forever. Watch the video and you'll see. The stealing thing is just a joke, and clear it all up at the end of the video. FYI, the nesting chair goes back at least a hundred years. That's part of what made it funny to me. If you find it offensive, accept my apology. I was just poking fun at some of my heroes.
