      Unfortunately not a great find. But a sad story of neglect and an organisation not equiped to uphold their promise

      Not exactly the best living conditions, if only these boats could talk, the stories they could tell

      I met people that served on her. One of the men that does the tours is friend of mine. I also worked with a couple older fellows that served on her. They did have great stories. Really neat stuff. @@droningwesternaustralia

      Agree compared to the Collins the living conditions were terrible. If only they could talk.

      They certainly do have some stories. I've toured both subs and the tour guides certainly have some stories

    I see that ex HMAS Sirius is in the background shot, suffering the same fate.

      Yes, she is suffering the same fate. Pity considering she is only about 15 years old. She could’ve been sold or even leased

    So, are there still 3 preserved - 1 in Fremantle, 1 in Sydney and 1 in rural NSW?

    • @droningwesternaustralia
      @droningwesternaustralia  2 роки тому +2

      Yes there are
      HMAS ONSLOW is at the National Maritime Museum in Sydney (floating)
      HMAS OVENS is at the Fremantle Maritime museum (mounted on a purpose built stand)
      HMAS OTWAY is located in Holbrook country NSW ( I believe it’s only the casing not the full submarine)
      HMAS OTAMA was going to be a museum submarine in Western Port Victoria

    • @andrewhodges6612

      Onslow is at the Maratime Museum in Darling Harbour in Sydney Ovens is at the Maratime Museum in Fremantle WA I served on Ovens 1985-1986 we went to Hawaii in 1985 where we fired the first Harpoon Missile from a Diesel Submarine an Encapsulated Harpoon Missile launched from a FWD Torpedo Tube & Otway is in Holbrook in Southern NSW she is in a park you can't go inside her. Otama was Australia's last surviving Oberon Class Special Ops Boat we had 2 Special Ops Boats the other was Orion she was cut up from scrap years ago I served on Otama 1988-1990 & did 3 Special Ops Patrols on her & there is a great video on UA-cam HMAS Otama 1989 which you may have seen it was filmed on our way home to Sydney after leaving Kure in Japan you will notice the lack of uniforms in this video as on our Special Operations Submarines we could wear whatever we wanted. When Ovens returned back to Sydney on the 24th of December 1985 after firing the first Harpoon we flew a large Boxing Kangaroo Flag as we sailed into Sydney Harbour we were given permission to fly it & the original vessel who first flew the Boxing Kangaroo Flag was Australia 11 during the America's Cup in 1983 & both Boats are now on display in WA. Otama has an incredible Operational history especially conducting Special Ops so she should have been saved

      I totally agree with you, that she should be preserved. I still don’t believe that WPOA were the best people to sell the boat to and for that I blame the RAN. It’s just a pity no one wants to step in and save her before they start cutting her up

    Why not use her a dive wreck put her next to ex HMAS SWAN in Western Australia ? A cheap way to get rid of her and also make some tourism dollars ? Great Vid 👏👏👏

    They can’t scrap it. At least put it in a museum or do something like what the did in Holbrook

    • @droningwesternaustralia
      @droningwesternaustralia  2 роки тому

      Unfortunately she is destined for the scrap yard. She was supposed to be a museum sub and was originally owned by the Western Port Oberon Association (WPOA). However, they weren’t able to secure any land so she was left moored for 21 years. After nearly sinking in 2021, Parks Victoria ordered WPOA to do something with her. They ignored the orders, so Parks Victoria and Navy took control, shipped her over to WA to be scrapped.

      Sadly she is going to be cut up for scrap Otama is Australia's last surviving Oberon Class Special Operations Submarine we had 2 Special Ops Boats the other was Orion she was cut up for scrap years ago I served on Otama 1988-1990 & did 3 Special Ops Patrols on her she has an incredible Operational history & for this alone she should have been saved she sat rusting away at anchor for over 20yrs in Western Port Bay in Victoria she was meant to be bought ashore in Hastings to become a museum but through many poor descions & lack of funding this never happened & the costs alone to transport her to Henderson on a Dutch Heavy Lift Ship that money spent could of bought her ashore I am not sure if she can be saved due to the condition of her hull sitting at anchor for over 20yrs with no ongoing maintenance during those years & have heard she is still fully intact on the inside & hopefully many of her internal fittings will go to museums especially the Submarine Museum in Holbrook in Southern NSW where HMAS Otway is located in a park.

      Well as a diesel-electric submarine they were our best and most successful submarine. Considering we were going to convert a nuclear French submarine to diesel-electric would make an interesting project. Don't know how feasible it would be especially considering the cost
