The man convicted in the deaths of 11 people has been sentenced to life in prison with no chance for parole for 25 years.
The sentence came after victim impact statements were read in the courtroom on Monday, as family members and friends of the victims gathered in-person to speak of their loss in Toronto's infamous van attack of 2018.
Alek Minassian was found guilty last year of 10 counts of first-degree murder and 16 counts of attempted murder. One of the victims injured in the attack died last November following Minassian's conviction.
Catherine McDonald reports on the emotions inside and outside the courtroom, and the legal implications of verdict.

He’s not going to get parole, even though he’ll be eligible in 25 years doesn’t mean he’ll get out. When the judge sees what he’s done, they’ll almost certainly deny him parole and tell him to go to hell.

This case will remain in the public consciousness for all time. When this worthless POS is eligible for parole you can be sure that he won't be released knowing full well what the public furor would be. Its the same thing with Paul Bernardo. He's been eligible for parole since 2020 and he's been refused each time he's applied.

It’s not the judge’s fault, 25 years to life is the longest sentence in allowable in Canada bylaw. Even though he’ll be eligible for parole in 25 years doesn’t mean he’ll get out, the judge will likely deny him any parole when the time comes.

concurrent. what a joke, it should be consecutive. and btw, a life sentence under canadian federal law still means that you can be out on day parole with an escort after 1/6 of the sentence served. As a reporter, i did this story back in 1984 after interviewing officials at kingston penetentiary and was shocked, shocked to learn that a lifer on good behaviour can be back out on the street on day parole with an armed escort after serving four and change years. i wrote that story 38 years ago and this law is still in effect. so people will see minassian at mcdonalds for his daily burger in a little over four years from now, if he keeps his nose clean in jail. that's because it's all about rehabilitation, not punishment.

Literally not how 25 years before POSSIBILITY of parole works here. That’s the the most legally we can grant in Canada. But there’s plenty of people who will never be let out of prison no matter how long they are in their for Paul Bernardo, Willie Pickton almost every mass murderer will not be released ever due to the severity of their crime (Karla Homolka is a rarity because the prosecution was dumb af in that scenario thinking because she’s a woman she didn’t play a big role in what Paul did and gave her a plea deal before gathering all the evidence). They can attempt like Paul does but that doesn’t mean they ever getting out. This dude will spend his life in prison.

@@ChaNnArD-mD So much of your comment is just not correct. Firstly that’s a different type of sentence he technically couldn’t be found guilty due to his insanity. He was found not criminally responsible. That’s a totally different type of court ruling. He was not given any type of minimum sentence since that is solely about rehabilitating someone based off their mental health issues till they are safe to be in society again. Also he was not fully discharged until 2017 the incident happened in 2008. When it comes to mental health based sentences they are not “doing time” they are receiving treatment so he didn’t “only do 5 years”. He was never doing time he was receiving intensive mental health treatments.

I totally agree with you. criminals will always find other means. Australia banned guns. Not only did the criminals still manage to get tge prohibited weapona but when they couldn't they just atarted setting fire to everything

@@mapleveritas2698 killing isn't the problem. Its the killing of innocent people thats the problem. In the united states, for every murder commited with a firearm their are at least 10 cases of killing via legal self defense. If guns were to dissapear, the innocent would be hurt more than the criminals
