In this Power BI tutorial I have tried to explain the difference between duplicate and reference query in Power BI.
What is the difference between duplicate and reference queries?
Duplicate Query: Duplicate will copy an entire table with all the applied steps.
The duplicated table ,lets call it “Dup” will be independent of the Original table.
Which means any changes you do to the Original table will not be reflected in “Dup”
    Reference Query:
It will also copy the original Query but the Reference Query (lets call it “Ref”) will have only one step (which will source from its Original )
It will not have the applied steps of Original Query.
Any changes you do to the Original table will be reflected in “Ref”
If you try to delete the main Query ,you cannot ,since it is dependent on the reference query.

Thanks for the video. The only thing no one is covering regarding this Duplicate & Reference are the Use Cases. I will like to know when will one method be preferred against the other. I hope you can do another video to explain further. Many thanks

Question: I have used Referenced to create a dimension table for Item numbers...and the performance is horrible. Since I don't need all of the steps in the query since many of them do not apply to my new dim table, should I used Duplicate instead of Reference? As long as the new dim table brings in new data (let's say we add a new Item), that is all I care about. A lot of the other transformations will not apply to my dim table and I feel like using Reference is what slowing it down so much since it is "referencing" all of those steps. And I guess related to that...once I've duplicated that querry, can I go back and delete all of the duplicated query steps?

Hello ! If the major issue is with regards to slowness ,we need to see the no of steps you are applying and the complexity of each step .Also to speed up things i was just wandering why cannot we create a simple table with distinct item numbers in the DB level itself ?
And yes with regards to using Duplicate you can always use it and delete the unwanted steps based on your requirement .Both the main and duplicate tables should be refreshed from the same source .Do let us know your solution .Happy learning !🙂
