11:26 I can imagine some grandma sitting watching her old westerns in the year 1999 and suddenly becomes frightened by a loud sound that was the eas and thought her tv was just broken 😞
1:39 - PST was local to me when that aired - I was still single-digit age at the time. My favorite part is when he says “oh I love those” after the test finishes. EAS activations (especially on TV) have always scared me since then, and only in the last several years have I been able to get over that…
@KINGOFPUGS19 The former would require an activation of the Emergency Alert System at the national level; and so far we as a nation have not had to do that. If we are all lucky we will never have to experience an activation of the Emergency Alert System at the national level. However a Tornado Emergency is only issued by the National Weather Service when the following criteria is met: 1.) A large, violent and destructive tornado (between EF3 to EF5 on the Enhanced Fujita Scale) has been either confirmed by Doppler radar or has been sighted by meteorologists, storm spotters the general public, or law enforcement. 2.) The tornado is moving rapidly towards a densely populated area. 3.) There is a significant threat posed by the tornado with a high potential for fatalities or serious injuries. This is done to prevent radio and TV meteorologists from overusing the term "Tornado Emergency" and desensitizing their audience to the severity of the tornado.

And you can see the ones that really work. The entire thing is based on you are watching a tv show, and all of a sudden catastrophe lands. So many people want to tell a story, but that takes everything away from the concept. Half of it is about rising panic, and the lack of our government not being able to help you, and there are only scenereos in your own head. Those tones are designed to put you on alert. And if you are very good at your tale, the disaster will unfolfd.
38:30 And I still don't see the EAS alert that used Microsoft Sam? Guess I was wrong. But maybe I haven't watched up to that part yet. I am determined to find it!
I just know there are gonna be a few EAS alerts that use Microsoft Sam. By 2000, they started using text to speech voices. If it wasn't dectalk Paul before scansoft Tom, it was Microsoft Sam. How do I know that? I just do. We pretty much all know this! There is at least 1, at least one, EAS alert in this video will use Microsoft Sam. If they can't use dectalk Paul, their only other option was pretty much Microsoft Sam.
@@augologo Um, uh, kinda. I wouldn't say that but ok. But, uh, well, like I said before, if dectalk Paul wasn't available on the computers for EAS alerts before ScanSoft Tom was a voice, their only other option was pretty much Microsoft Sam. And even now, most stations I've listened to, they don't use the neospeech Paul voice, but they do use the Microsoft David voice. My guess why they couldn't use the neospeech Paul voice was because they couldn't get other voices on their systems. That is why in most cases, you usually don't here the neospeech Paul voice anymore. Most stations just use the Microsoft David voice. They may end up replacing the neospeech Paul voice with a Microsoft Azure voice, which is most likely going to be the case because of reasons. I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest if they did though.
@@augologo Guess you're right. But come on, we should know that back in the early 2000s, there really weren't many options were they? If they couldn't get dectalk, that voice was pretty much all they had. But once Ivona, Neospeech, scansoft, well technically Acapela was a thing, with their infovox 230 and 330, they didn't really have a choice. If it was like your local station back then, and they couldn't afford dectalk, well they were pretty much scrued. But at the same time, people would actually narrate a few EAS alerts, so I guess you could say they were not exactly scrued. But then again, it would be kind of a waste of time to have to record the EAS narrators sometimes, and dectalk was kind of expensive, hense why they kind of started to just use whatever voice they had on their systems, in this case Microsoft Sam. Because let's be honest, I don't think many radio stations really use macs. You probably can imagine how expensive that speech synthesizers were, so if you were using windows, and you didn't have the money, and the time, yeah, then you really had no other choice. But yeah, that's how it was back then. But nowadays, we have Microsoft Azure and all that other stuff. So yeah, now you have a little history lesson from me. Hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha! Ok. I'm done.
