    In this clip: 13.44.49 Fish number four arrives, it's a whopper headless trout.
    Too late for little chick3, alas. Looks like it has lost its battle to survive, it doesn't move. This morning’s rain after two days of cold and damp and no fish has been too much. Poor wee thing is still alive but only just. All we can do now is hope for a swift end.
    13.46.31 Louis departs and the family tuck in. C2 first, but C1 also getting a share.
    Sad as it is, with only two chicks to feed, C2 should hopefully settle down and both share the food without too much aggro. A great pity C3 couldn’t hang on for this phase to have ended. There is consolation in that it is now just fading away without being harassed, although Louis did accidentally stand on it during the handover.

    Brief history of the nests:
    2016 Woodland Trust acquire the Loch Arkaig ancient Caledonian rainforest remnant and manage it in partnership with Arkaig Community Forest.
    2017 A nest cam is installed on a refurbished Osprey nest. A young male Louis and a young female Aila take up residence and raise one male chick to fledging: Lachlan JH4. 2018 Louis & Aila return but a Pine Marten steals all their eggs.
    2019 Louis & Aila return and raise two female chicks to fledging: Mallie JJ0 and Rannoch JJ2.
    2020 Louis & Aila return and raise two male and one female chicks to fledging: Doddie JJ6; Vera JJ8 and Captain JJ7.
    2021 Louis returns but sadly Aila doesn't. Louis takes up residence on a new nest with a new mate Dorcha and they raise two male chicks to fledging: Aspen LW3 and Alder LW4. This is designated Nest Two, no one takes up residence on Nest One.
    2022 Woodland Trust install a nest cam on Nest Two. Louis & Dorcha return and raise two female chicks to fledging: Willow LW5 and Sarafina LW6. Still no residents on Nest One.
    2023 Louis & Dorcha return, and raise one male chicks to fledging: Ludo LY7. No residents on Nest One but male Garry LV0 spent a lot of time flirting with Affric 152 despite her mate Prince still being around.

    RIP little chick three. Sadly the littlest Loch Arkaig Osprey chick has lost its battle to survive. Two days of rain and cold and no fish have weakened it to where although there was plenty of fish this day, the morning's heavy downpour was more than it could cope with. Some consolation in that it just faded away with no harrassment from the other two.

      So sad. I was so relieved that all 3 chicks had hatched, I wasn’t expecting the danger to be so close.

      That's such sad news, was always hoping this wouldn't be the case but as time went on it wasn't looking good for the little one. I've never seen such aggressive behaviour as this between chicks before and I've been watching many nests the last 7 years, but suppose this is nature and it does happen. Not that it makes it any easier to watch RIP LITTLE ONE😥💔

      Very sad but now C1 and C2 have a better chance of survival. The statistics of the third hatch surviving to fledge are not very good.

      It was a tough watch, Suzy, I really thought little bob was old enough to make it. But the combination of circumstances was too much to overcome.

      Appreciate you saying @@GeemeffGeemeff I never give up hope for C3 ,, definitely a combination of sad circumstances.
      Freezing nights of hail didn't help , the attacks were hard to watch.
      Our Summer hasn't really arrived this year, cold & rained all June so far.
      I hope the remaining 2 siblings will survive eachother.🙏🏻

    I have been watching Osprey nests for about three years now. While I have seen most nests with 3 eggs in them, usually only 2 end up becoming fully grown birds. There does tend to be competition between the chicks as they get older, and one nestling typically will not survive to adulthood. It is heartbreaking, but it is the cycle of life. As many others have commented on here, I will not forget #3.

    • @GeemeffGeemeff
      @GeemeffGeemeff  3 місяці тому

      The statistics for the third hatch are grim - one in three might make it to fledging. And of the chicks who get to fledge, 70%, roughly two out of three, won't survive their first year.

    Disappointing to see people have a pop at Dorcha's mothering ability. They're not trying to create equality in the bird kingdom, it's simply the strongest survive, and Dorcha is doing a great job in making sure her genes live on.

    • @GeemeffGeemeff
      @GeemeffGeemeff  3 місяці тому

      I agree with you completely but I think people would like everything to be fair, and by human standards, it wasn't, whereas of course Dorcha was ensuring the strongest with the best chance of surviving to migration stage is taken care of first.

    Louis steps all over C3 like it's just a piece of branch...as mom drags the fish through the bowl.
    Times like this just prove these animals aren't really careful with their chicks...and although the chicks appear small and fragile, they're resilient and strong !❤

    • @GeemeffGeemeff
      @GeemeffGeemeff  3 місяці тому

      Usually being stepped on and being nearly whacked by branches is just part of everyday nest life, but not when you're very weak and can't move out the way as th others did. However, that incident made no difference to C3's survival, it was already too late.

  • @jimmcintosh9045

    So shocking this with 3 almost gone and 1 cowering. Dorcha has been a poor mother and not sharing food.

    • @GeemeffGeemeff
      @GeemeffGeemeff  3 місяці тому

      That's not how it works, I'm afraid. The strongest chick, usually the first hatch but not in this case, gets the biggest share of the food, the others are insurance in case anything happens to the dominant one. The female responds to the most urgent gaping beak before her, and in this case it was dominant C2. C1 is next in the order if there's enough food, and only then C3. The female will ignore any chick not pushing forward strongly, or not in the nest cup. If they're not strong enough, she doesn't waste too many resources on them, much as a mother cat or dog will often reject the runt in the litter in favour of ensuring the survival of the strongest.

  • @nonnasegovia3197

    C3 took a beating from C1 this morning, after only receiving one bite from mom.
    The weather had nothing to do with its deteriorating state. The lack of food and aggression was once again the culprit.
    Mombrella protected C1& C3 even after C2 tried to push them out into the hail storm yesterday.
    Now ...LET'S GET READY TO RUUUUUMBLE! 😂

    • @GeemeffGeemeff
      @GeemeffGeemeff  3 місяці тому

      Dorcha had all three of them covered during the first downpour, but C3 was too weak to crawl undercover during the second, longer downpour. Weather definitely played a part - it's been unseasonably cold and wet in Scotland - there was fresh snow in June and plummeting temperatures. That, combined with lack of food and stress from aggression by C2, combined to cause C3's death.

  • @eah8101
    @eah8101 3 місяці тому +2

    I think I commented before that one of the chicks was not very active, even when Louis brought a fish -- sad -- Dorcha seems a lot more interested (almost exclusively, really) in feeding herself here, rather than the chicks -- has fish really been that scarce recently? -- Louis is normally such a good provider -- anyway, on the bright side perhaps the odds of the other two surviving have now increased significantly

    • @GeemeffGeemeff
      @GeemeffGeemeff  3 місяці тому

      As of 16th June, Louis has brought 202 fish to the nest, and another five on the 16th, well on target looking at previous years. Dorcha needs to eat too as she's tied to the nest when the chicks are small and can't go fishing. no good if she's too weak to protect the chicks and defend the nest. Louis had brought six fish each day on several days prior to the 16th, but the day when C3 started to weaken the weather was atrocious and fishing difficult - the waters of the loch get roiled up so he can't see the fish - but even then he still brought one fish to the nest. There has not been a day when he hasn't brought fish to the nest. As you say, now that bob3 has become a sad statistic, the other two stand a much better chance.

      Yes, indeed C1 is a bit larger, but chick 2 became the most aggressive , so sad to see when they were both cowering in fear of C2.
      Possibly C2 is female & C1 Male. The weather has been the worst in years, still cold in Scotland.

      C2 has such a strong will to survive, it took on C1 and dominated it. It may be that C2 is female and C1 male - as with all raptors, the females are bigger and stronger than the males. Not pretty to see, but C2 is to be admired for being so determined to get the top share of the food and warmth.
