I met him after a show once. The most down to earth person for being in a famous band. He was happy to talk about anything.

Underrated guitar player and almost never interviewed about his guitar playing. He’s actually very astute about gear and getting amazing original sounds....

I met Robert after the Cure played the Roseland In 2000, his people were very clear about not crowding or touching him. Someone didn’t give this dude the memo

I love this video because Robert feels no obligation to do his eye rolling, tongue out stumbling front man persona. For a few minutes he’s just a guy in a guitar shop who wants to admire and talk about guitars without the need to be who people want him to be.
Look how Robert is playing along though he clearly doesn't get why you would want to write with a marker on such a wonderful guitar that Mr Touchy-Feely's probably never ever going to play :D

being 51 and a musician (pro) I don't have the time to listen to music like I did when growing up...Robert smith is by far one of the most underrated guitar player of his timeonly now is he getting the credit he deserves...if you want pure Cure you have to listen to Disintegration (my fav) deep as it goes with intense guitars and smith suffing at a all time high...the great thing with the Cure you can hear the growth from the very beginning. all the way up untill now. IM waiting to hear what's next for the great Cure...tickets not yet on sale neither any new material who is this meat head that gets tomeet robert and get a guitar that he probably cant play.and Ihe had the nerve to call Robert BOB!! kill me now! I wiilgl oo the show with a fake press pass and do what I have to...once again thanx for the post watched 50 times

loving this! Robert Smith being so awkward whilst remaining so congenial and polite! The trappings of recognised talent. you can tell how much he wants to give his own new guitar a crack. Would have loved to see that ~ watching Smith run through his new guitars capabilities and what he would have chosen to play while he was testing it out. (yeah, shameless fangirl here. Disintegration was the first album I ever bought. On vinyl. when I was 11)

Encountered Mr Smith in the early 90s when he was shopping for an acoustic (Hanks in Denmark St.)
He seemed to want some space so I simply walked last nodded to him and said thanks, he simply smiled and seemed to appreciate being given the personal space.

It's a psychological phenomenon that famous/rich/celebs defy the natural laws of what is considered attractive due to the reputation and almost 'god like' aura that they have due to their fame. Otherwise you wouldn't really think twice about a middle aged man with bad hair who isn't the most amazingly socially interactive person!

When he started talking after posing he seemed generally interested in the guitar. I'm an American and I get it we are annoying, pompous and arrogant. As far as Robert Smith goes, I love him but he's always a little annoyed and probably doesn't like people always wanting a part of him.

Yeah, he says in the video he used the same model as the record exec was holding (the red one is not the same). I was pretty certain he did t like national guitars though - maybe in a live setting.
