Without pulling up the service manual and studying the schematic, my first guess is that there's a sort of vox function that's not detecting any audio and thus kicking it out of record. This could be due to the preamp circuitry not working so the audio never actually makes it to the cassette portion. Is there any monitoring output so you can at least hear if all the amp stages and input switching if present is working?

Thanks for your reply, as always. It inspired me to go live on UA-cam, a spur of the moment thing (which was fun). I ran a couple of tests which might help diagnose the problem, but I'm none the wiser. Thanks for the suggestions.

I figured it out. It was a dirty switch that detects the erase protect tab. Contact cleaner solved it. Thanks for the help.

yep those stupid leaf switches get all oxidised and dont make good connection which confuses the microprocessor which doesnt trigger the record relay properly

Sadly buying secondhand tape decks is high risk in current times unless you are a top audio engineer or take the risk with someone who says they can...the heads could be on the way out...the mechanisms could be on the last legs and there's the trouble of getting the actual right parts for the deck cause we don't have any audio service centres like the old days....hope you get ot the root of the problem.

Thanks very much. I enjoy troubleshooting, but have no experience except what you see on UA-cam. I like finding out for myself, but get frustrated if my skill level isn't high enough. That's what I suspect is the case with this deck, from what you say. Thanks for the info.

I spent ages going round in circles with my aiwa wx 828 i bought new from tandy in the end all my problems were down to faulty tactile buttons for the functions ,I bought a spare parts deck and swapped the function button pcb into my deck, at some point i will solder new buttons into the old pcb .

Thanks. By tactile buttons, you mean the ones on the front, or the ones in the deck well? The latter was the solution for me. Fixed it last night.

@@CBitsTech The buttons that operate play, fast forward ect were my problems .

@@paulb4uk because the buttons are lack of use and oxidised over time. It may work if you could squirt some contact cleaner and operate it... By the way I got the Aiwa 909
