  • In this video we talk about our primary way of melting metal for lost wax casting, the Kerr Electro-Melt. It may no longer be available but the re-branded version still is. If you have this or a similar machine let us know your thoughts below.

      We’ve been using a press we made but when it comes time to upgrade sizing up just seems like a good idea.

    Hey! So I have someone selling an even older version of this machine with an analog readout and a steel casing and it seems pretty much the same otherwise. Do you think I'd still be able to find parts for this machine if anything went bad on it? Like heating coils or the thermometer part? Btw it works fine at the moment.

    When the crucible starts to degrade, how do you keep the contaminants out of the casting? I’ve noticed that the top of my crucible is crumbling, which is expected. But the little granules are coming off with the metal when I pour, sometimes getting as far in as the actual piece and ruining it with black spots that I have to then dig out and fill to try and save it. Then the rest is stuck to the top of the button and is also a mess to clean up. The crucible I’m using is the one it came with, but I did order a new one from PepeTools I’m trying out today.

      What metal are you casting with? (is it low temps?) We've never encountered this issue as any graphite that gets into our metal is either scraped off or is burned off.
      If it's black char that is embedded throughout the casting, could it be remaining printed resin?

    Great review, thanks. Have you had to replace your heating coil elements? I've just had mine fail in a cheaper model and can't even get them out. Are replacement elements readily available for this model?

      Haven’t had to replace anything on either of our units. The 1kg or 3kg. Not sure where you can get replacement parts.

    hello, how do you go about cleaning your crucibles? and do you add borax to ur metals during burnout?

    • @ClearMindJewellery
      @ClearMindJewellery  2 роки тому +3

      We never add borax when using the melter, graphite creates its own reducing atmosphere which does the same job as borax. Borax additionally eats away at the graphite and ruins the crucibles much faster. The only cleaning that's ever had to be done is using a quartz/graphite rod and breaking up some of the little bits of metal that may have stuck to the bottom after casting, usually only the case when recycling metal scraps.

    How long have you used this, and have you ever had to replace the heating element?

      We purchased it in 2018 and have only ever had to replace the crucibles. Still running strong.

      Umicore. It is one of the larger refiners we have access to in Canada. You will need a licensed business to be able to purchase from them.
