Chaos as MPs turn on Speaker over last minute change to Gaza ceasefire vote
Вставка

- Speaker Lindsay Hoyle granted two amendments to the SNP's vote to call for a ceasefire in Gaza, which set the House alight.
It is customary in opposition day debates that the government can make amendments to votes, but it is unheard of for a second opposition party (Labour) to further make amendments.
What was normal was Lindsay Hoyle granted the Conservatives amendment to change wording to call for an "immediate humanitarian pause". The House erupted after he also granted Labour's amendment to call for an "immediate humanitarian ceasefire" after Hamas releases Israeli hostages, which he granted after claiming the precedence is "an outdated approach".

It’s amazing how someone can lose their honour, dignity and respect in less than 5 mins! The system is an absolute JOKE!
5 minutes? Hoyle has been proving himself to be a third rate clown since 2019.
Well said !
I haven't seen anything with Hoyle worth respecting for quite some time. He has been a huge part of the problem in there. A pathetic individual.

Johnson ran rings round him from day one
They're preparing to vote on a situation where tens of thousands of people have been killed and they behave like they're in a schoolyard. Appalling people. Imagine having so little respect.
The country’s gone to shit. Why do they squabble over something abroad when we have problems of our own here. Gaza is non of the UKs business; both Israel and Hamas are in the wrong, if they themselves cared so much about ‘peace’ and stopping the violence, they would- they would just stop fighting.
Don't forget the insidious nature of who is really pulling the strings here. Starmer has admitted speaking with Israeli President Isaac Herzog before lobbying the Speaker of the House who is the son of a founder of Labour Friends of Israel. It's as clear as day. Disgraceful.
I couldn't agree more. All the outrage from our parliamentarians had nothing to do with the people dying every day in this horrendous conflict. They were angry because the were frustrated in their attempts to score cheap political points by exploiting the misery of thousands of people.
There's only one thing outdated here!

I really liked Hoyle when he was elected. But he has proved himself time and time again unable to contain a government running rampant over the rights of parliament and is now himself trampling backbencher's rights. Whatever happened to the backbencher's backstop?!
How do you suggest he should control the government? The system is certainly not perfect but it sort of works if all sides follow the “rules” and have some honour.
@@AnotherLostBall What he has done here is to stop the Tories from blocking Labour's amendment of an SNP motion - far more democratic than allowing them to sneakily block Labour's amendment by submitting their own which by precedent ousts Labour's.

So to say that HIS opinion is correct, above mine and anyone else's, is not only moot (no one gets to challenge him) it is also clearly a very poor understanding of how democracy SHOULD operate. There is nothing democratic about a Speaker having the power to arbitrarily remove motions, on a whim, at the last minute. You evidently do not understand this. Re Read what I wrote and hopefully you'll now understand.
@@obscurazone I think they're just a genocide denier trying to claim that statements which reflect the actual facts on the ground (ongoing genocide) are to be dismissed out of hand.
@@xThronex Nah. I truly think it's because the SNP motion will literally state the word Genocide in print, and the "establishment" will fundamentally refuse to have this word being used formally as a matter of public record. They will NOT want GB associated in any way shape or form with that word - which they are, we sell arms to Israel. So by having this motion denied, GB wrings its hands, again. It is wiped off the public record, and no one can say GB did/did not vote for or against GENOCIDE. It's all PR, plain and simple.

Surely he has now set the precedent that the 2 largest opposition parties to bring their own separate amendments for any motion brought to the House.
This is a good thing tbh. The idea that the government can block one of the opposition parties by submitting its own amendment is bad for politics and just empowers those in power more.
T@@TheConnorian The current system where two main parties largely control parliament can be problematic, as it can sometimes lead to the interests of smaller groups or diverse perspectives being overlooked and at times the smaller parties will represent the majority position like with thr vote for a cease fire
The anger seems to be from the SNP and Tories. Precedent seems to be that only the government can suggest an amendment ... Or at any rate that only two would be tabled. This would force a 'you are for a ceasefire' as the SNP have it in their motion or the Conservatives amendment. SNP have said they would back the Labour amendment, so it's unclear practically what the issue is. Hoyle is going against precedent, perhaps under pressure to his Speakership, but if the Tories or SNP are objecting on grounds other than the principle of precedent then it seems disingenuous to argue you are against further debate/nuance on the issue.
@@LEThavFUNnSMILE Yes, which is why I don't think any more power should be ceded to whomever is in government. It's the SNP day in Westminster to put forward an opposition motion for debate and vote, the SNP motion asked for a immediate ceasefire in Gaza and in the motion it uses the words "collective punishment".
It was reported that Labour was going to vote against or abstain against the SNP ceasefire motion because Keir Starmers Labour doesn't like the words "collective punishment" that is happening to the civilians in Gaza.
It's been reported that Labour lent on the Labour Westminster Speaker to change the Westminster convention on how to proceed.
The Labour Speaker changed the convention of Westminster that only the SNP motion and the Tory government motion would get debated and voted on. The Labour speaker of Westminster added a Labour amendment to the SNP immediate Gaza ceasefire motion to be debated and voted on.
If the Labour amendment is voted through the SNP immediate Gaza ceasefire motion would not be voted on.
The Tories pulled their amendment which means that the Labour amendment to the SNP motion will get voted on and will be added to the SNP motion and the SNP motion for an immediate Gaza ceasefire will not be voted on.
The Labour amendment to the SNP motion was nodded through because the Tory government said that they wouldn't vote, so there wasn't a vote. No Labour MP can say they voted for a ceasefire.
It effectively means that any SNP opposition day at Westminster to put forward SNP motions to be debated and voted on can be hijacked by Labour and the SNP motion wouldn't get voted on.
The Westminster Clarks warned Lindsay Hoyle the Westminster speaker not to break with Westminster convention that could effectively deny the SNP a vote on their motion on the SNP opposition day at Westminster.
Lindsay Hoyle who was a Labour MP before he became the Speaker of the house of commons who is meant to be unbiased and independent should resign.
SNP are worthless and do not deserve an opposition day.

Sounds just like the playground. How much is it we pay these people again?
Could somebody explain this to me as though I were 7 years old?
SNP have brought a statement saying they want a ceasefire and want Parliament to back it. Labour want to tweak it to be more about a "lasting ceasefire". The government want to tweak it to say a slightly different ceasefire.
Traditionally if the government want to tweak it, then parliament doesn't even get to consider Labour's proposed changes. Hoyle has said that is outdated and says that both should be allowed to be considered.
The Tories don't like this because they wanted to be able to tweak it in a way Labour didn't like and say they didn't vote for a ceasefire. The SNP don't like this because they wanted to also see Labour divided over whatever the statement ended up being. Labour like this because they can vote for the ceasefire they believe in.
