I'm down here in Durango, I just graduated with a degree in Criminology and have been considering P.I. work. I'm very grateful for this channel and its insights.

An old AM transistor radio will detect RF, turn dial to lowest bandwidth and listen for static noise. I am EMF hypersensitive; I can locate wires behind walls without a device but it is painful.

Having educated third-party professionals come in and look for devices is definitely the most valuable aspect of your service. On the technical side, do most surveillance devices that utilize the RF spectrum adhere to FCC regulations? There are expensive spectrum analyzers that can do panoramic sweeps over large bandwidths, but even cheaper spectrum analyzers can scan within common frequency bands. I imagine the FCC requires most devices used the unlicensed ISM bands of 2.4GHz/5GHz or NFC/13.56MHz?

Sort of. Most cheap commercially available stuff on Amazon Ali expressway etc is standard 2.4/5ghz or 13.56 mhz. The more expensive and custom built/state sponsored stuff can be on any frequency.

@@katyg3873 wouldn’t those normally be prohibited from import if they operate outside of the unlicensed bands? I guess if you are doing a sweep you don’t necessarily know who the adversary is and it could be a nation state or other actor capable of imported prohibited radio equipment.

@@aamirm5117 if you’re using devices outside of the normal frequencies then I’m guessing you’re not concerned with them being illegal to import and that you have ways round it. Also if you know what you’re doing you can make them from components which aren’t illegal.

Hi John, would you recommend the bug hunter for accuracy above the andre?

For travel, I started looking into hidden cam and mic detectors, stumbled on your channel and reviewed some of your vids on the topic. Seems a great channel for PIs, and provides great education about hidden cam & mic detectors and the various complications, equipment and time/expense - all good info, especially for PIs. However, while one of your vids did provide a link to a couple detectors in the $150-200 range (like RD-10 and 30), these also appear to be RF and there is no posted info about them (just model number and price - not even any distinction between RF 10 & 30), their strengths and/or limitations (beyond your commentary on RF frequencies and when transmitting) or any other differences between these two devices. What I am wondering, if you would consider making a video for common travelers using hotels and/or air b&b type vacation rentals, most commonly used surveillance gear in such places, and detectors that might be of reasonable reliability (and how to use) - or if we have ANY way to even try to protect our privacy in hotel rooms, etc. THANK YOU for the education thus far, you saved me from wasting money on a sub $100 detector that might have provided false confidence. It just seems that with surveillance gear so cheap these days, there seems to be no privacy confidence for travelers. Given the wide market for the cheaper RF devices, clearly there is interest to find at least some protection - the question YOU are in a position to know and help travelers (in addition to the cautions you already provide), what is a traveler to do? Any gear travelers might consider, and/or how to TRY to protect oneself from such privacy invasions. Thanks for what you do, and I hope you can and will provide some guidance that is helpful to travelers.

Is it possible that someone can remotely delete my voice recorder messages that I recorded? Also, is it possible to remotely to delete photos from a digital point and shoot camera?

I have an el-cheapo rf detector. I did a 'sweep' of my old place and found what seemed to be a suspiciously localised signal in my mother's room, it seemed to be coming from the door frame/wall. I theorised there was a bug, hard-wired to some mains supply within the ceiling, then I felt it was radiation coming from her clock radio. I disconnected the dc plug from the radio. The weirdo signal did not abate. Then I removed the DC power pack from the wall. The signal still persisted, for about 40 seconds, then went away...was I found out? Turns out the 'signal' was nothing more than the spurious frequencies emitting from the switchmode power supply for the clock radio. The RF went off only when the power pack had fully discharged....and yes, it took 40 seconds.

Hi, can you do a video on how people can see what you are searching, viewing on your iPad, iPhone, even they can see I put a note under Note on the iPad, very amazing, can you help to understand please, thank you very much.

Hmmm 1:27 "you can find these cheap RF detectors anywhere" and then shows image of lens finder (or very cropped image of aliexpress junk lol)....3:06 "a spectrum analyser is not operating in the near field" well that depends on the operator and the sensor, it is not a generic trait of spectrum analysers. The MESA and OSCOR are spectrum analysers which can be used with near field probes (the ANDRE probes even) You will want arms like Arnie to carry the old dinosaur OSCOR around though, slow, heavy and makes an excellent anchor.. 5:02 "not all electronics have a non-linear junction" the literal (Oxford) definition of something electronic is that it is composed of semiconductors which all have NLJ but yep easy to mask. Got to agree with the hours and hours and hours ;-)
