  • Farmer John LaBoyteaux describing the initial wear pattern on the millstones at Beck's Bakery. The stones are painted with tempura paint (it's for kids - so it is reasonably safe to eat!). Once the paint is dry, we reassemble the mill and test for high spots. To do this, we slowly bring the stones together while the runner stone (the vertical one attached to the machine) is spinning. We bring the stones together until just touching. The spinning stone scratches off the paint, marking the high spots. We will grind down the high spots with an air hammer and repeat the steps over and over until we get a more even distribution of wear marks on both stones. It took us seven tries to get it.
