Good question. I sympathize with the Russian despite being a non-Russian. Being led by despots and kleptocrats is such a pain. Yet a few things like the notion the population fought an evil regime and winning through all the blood and sweat spent is something both the Russians and my own people can be proud of. It's weird seeing footage like this. As someone who wasn't around for the 50's, seeing the architecture, the cars, the fashion, knowing at one time that it was normal and high tech is just mind boggling to me. Because in my mind, as a 21 year old, the 50's is this surreal age. Surreal in a way that I can only best describe as feeling like an older demonstration of futurism. The entire decade felt like a movie from the 1940's predicting what things would be like in another 100 years, if that makes sense. Which I guess is my way of saying that somehow the 1950's feels futuristic and retro at the same time, almost as though it's an alternate timeline to modern day. In many ways, we're worse off, and in many ways, they're worse off. I guess it's up to individual interpretation to decide which is better. Edit: The 1980's has a very similar feel, as well. But the 80's are also three whole decades closer to modern day than the 50's are, and thus forth feel a lot more grounded in my personal interpretation of reality. It's a much more (for lack, and want, of a better term) soft-core rendition of the feeling that I get from the 1950's, that's exasperated in media such as 80's music, TV and movies. It almost makes me wonder if 9/11 never happened, if we would actually be living in a world more similar to that of the portrayal of the year 2015 in Back to the Future. I mean, probably not, but it still makes you wonder just how far behind we are because of 9/11... it certainly makes me wonder whether or not we're still being held back as a society in the shadow and wake of 9/11.
Im a German, so i have a question, why u think 9/11 was so important in the development of the western society? I mean like for the society the left movement of student in 1968 had a great impact, since then this Generation got also in charge in the instutions... And now we have got the Situation, where conservativ Values are hated. Those values, that made the western civilazion great are now getting rejected.
@@derkritiker9897 A lot of American liberties were lost in the invisible cast shadows of the Twin Towers. Societal changes to our very way of being. It sparked up another war that lead into the fundamentally broken America that we know today. America had been on a downward trend since Reagan left office, or even arguably during Nixon's presidency - though I'd be remiss to say that 9/11 didn't have a more substantial impact on the blatant downward trend since it gave people and politicians a reason to change the way we lived our lives. (Just to clarify - no, I don't think Bush had anything to do with 9/11. If nothing else, I don't think Bush was smart enough to devise a plan such as that NOR do I know what he would have served to have gained from doing so either)

Yes, pollution existed then, as it does today. But put it in context--- the 1950 US population was about 150 million, vs about 310 million today. More people = more pollution, more cars, more planes, more freeways, more chemicals and toxins, congestion, and urban sprawl. No comparison, really.

Good question. I sympathize with the Russian despite being a non-Russian. Being led by despots and kleptocrats is such a pain. Yet a few things like the notion the population fought an evil regime and winning through all the blood and sweat spent is something both the Russians and my own people can be proud of. I guess that's the sentiment back in the day.
Maybe they are happy that they survived the war.

The darker side about America back in the day was that there was TONS of pollution, mostly coming from the cars and factories
Yes, pollution existed then, as it does today. But put it in context--- the 1950 US population was about 150 million, vs about 310 million today. More people = more pollution, more cars, more planes, more freeways, more chemicals and toxins, congestion, and urban sprawl. No comparison, really.
@@stundenullkrantz3117 There were no environmental regulations though so factories and cars spewed straight toxins into the air. That's why so many boomers have cancer and why the epa was created.
@@jacobs2099 On balance, the environment was not so toxic back in the 50s, simply because of the numbers-- in 1960 American drove 718,762 _million_ miles (all types of vehicles), yet in 2018 they drove 3,240,327 _million_ miles.
Since 1950, at least 70,000 new chemical compounds have been invented and dispersed into our environment. Few have been tested for safety. Add to that the proliferation everywhere of radio frequency microwave radiation (cell phones, cell towers, wi-fi) exposure, which was not common back in 1950s.
Today's toxic soup in environment is a major reason for ever increasing sickness in population today.
