When I lived in Galway over 20 years ago, my cousin who was a good amateur and had worked on a site with Sean introduced me to him in a shopping centre. Every time I seen him after that, I'd say 'hello Sean' and he'd stop and have a little chat. I was very proud to tell people I knew Sean Mannion, Irish legend.
After his title fight in Madison Garden 1984, he went out after the fight for a drink in a nearby Irish bar. Big queue getting in, Seán went to the back of the queue and waited in line. Humble gentleman! Legend. Tough as nails as well !!!
I had the amazing experience of training with Sean, at Connolly's in South Boston in the 1980s. Toughest guy I ever met - not to mention the nicest. If he had higher level management, he would have become the World Champion!
I remember as a child growing up in Cork hearing about Sean mannion going for a world title, it's a shame Sean never got the recognition he really deserved at home, after years I knew the significance of how great Sean was, to take Mike mccallum the distance one of the greatest pound per pound boxers that ever put on gloves, Collins took mccallum the distance and we know what he went on to do, I really feel with the right care and management Sean would have definitely been a world champion, a really tough modest Irish man.
