When I hear the beginning of a SD song you have to hear it out because you remember how good
it is. The replay value is always there, and never tires.
Genius does not even begin to describe Donald & Walter and the way they made music.
Larry Carlton was a rhythm and lead guitarist for them. He was the lead guitarist on the entire Royal Scam album. He became a very big solo artist in the jazz fusion genre in the late 70's and 80's.
You catch on, Chod to the less is more approach to the drums… staying in the pocket while adding subtle nuances is part of the Dan’s genius. Deacon Blues is a great example of leaving space for the rest of the musicians
I’ve seen this one many times. The thing that sticks with me most is in this section here, where Dean Parks talks about rehearsing beyond technical perfection, to reach a level of ease and casualness with the song that actually makes it better to listen and re-listen to.
he doesn't mean "Pad" as in a computerized controller. He meant "pad" in the musical sense of something laid under something else. they used the synth sound to help bring out the flute part that wasn't coming out adequately . It's a common arranging and production technique.
BTW, TOTALLY AGREE about the Dean Parks quote about PERFECTION NOT THE GOAL!! GENIIUS!!! Rehearse till perfect..THEN master it to the point you can play it loose & let it sound ALIVE & ORGANIC…RATHER THAN TOO PERFECT & STERILE!
Thank you so much for this series on The Making of Aja, as a long time Steely Dan fan you have expanded on my musical universe, your comments are always spot on, keep it up, thanks!
You don't get tired of it cuz it's well-made it's like a great movie
Can't wait to see you freak out with the Purdie Shuffle. Your mind will be unable to cope. My favourite is Wayne Shorter saying he came in and did his solo in one take.
Deacon Blues is my favorite.
Bee Gees
Kiss Of Life.
Mr Natural.
My favorite band, and album
as well !!!!! Still listening 2023 !!!!
Totally hooked 😘
great reaction...insightful and heartfelt....thanks.
Wow.... this is truly a treat hearing a musician like yourself analyze this album. The comment about "perfection" was mind blowing. SD would reach "perfection" and then...... go beyond that. I wonder how on earth they were able to accomplish such a feat given the costly studio time not to mention the cost of the studio musicians. They would not simply bring in a different guitarist... then would bring in an entire new set of musicians. I seriously doubt that would even be possible today. We are so lucky to have this GIFT from Donald, Walter and all the extremely talented musicians that contributed to this masterpiece.
These were the guys that taught me how to groove back in high school.
what was that bass, because I was just lookin at that dude waiting on the horns in the jazz band
@tommytbone9778 the player? Chuck Rainey played on a lot of Steely Dan tracks. If you mean the type of Bass. Not sure...
@@robbyrob0723 Chuck was in that group of top bassist of my era, but i was talking about waiting on my dude to kick in because we were always havin to keep the up time for those guitar hero`s @ practice
I remember my pops and some of his friends sitting around and jamming to Steely Dan. They had a reel to reel tape machine and certain parts they had difficulty figuring out. They would rewind and play those parts over and over again until they could determine some of the odd chords that were frequently used in Steely Dan recordings. I was maybe five years old but this memory is still vivid.🖖🏼
I got 'clarinet' out of that, also! Can't wait for your reaction to part 4.
Love musical documentaries! This is one of my faves. If you want more documentaries about top notch musicians behind the scenes, you might want to seek out “Standing In The Shadows Of Motown”, “The Wrecking Crew” (about the Cali session musicians on many of the hits of the 60’s & 70’s) and “Muscle Shoals”. Even if you don’t post the reactions to these online, they’re really worth checking out if you really appreciate the unsung heroes of the studio.
Here’s another Aja documentary from the perspective of mastering engineer, Bernie Grundman: ua-cam.com/video/sGLFTm6jMrY/v-deo.htmlsi=QDKSWeGVql80bvMV
The look on your face when they talked about getting to perfect and getting past it to listenable, I think I had the same face the first time I saw this.
I love showing people this video, please finish it. Great to see you enjoy it like I do.
So glad you came across this!! This is probably my favorite music documentary of all time. I’m a bit biased because steely Dan is my favorite band ever. Regardless it’s great watching a fellow musician see and grasp all of this for the first time! Thank you
Yea, that's a pretty good album.
Wait 'till you get to the segment with drummer Bernard Purdie. Guitarist Larry Carlton didn't just play rhythm and write out arrangements for the music, but played a number of great solos on their albums, such as "Kid Charlemagne" on The Royal Scam album. He played with The Jazz Crusaders, and many albums by people like Joni Mitchell, and wrote the theme for TV's Hill Street Blues ( besides putting out albums under his own name).
Perfect? Yes. I agree.
"These were those days where I was singing a little like Jerry Lewis. " lol.
Chod I love your enthusiasm and complete grasp and understanding of the tremendous magnitude of Steely Dan and the album Aja. They just don't make music like this anymore. Imagine just turning on the radio back in the day and this is what you got on the hip FM radio stations. What I would give to have this quality and variety today. It still amazes me 40 plus years later that this music was all over the radii. This and so much more! Love your channel bro! I can just tell by your knowing smile you're in the zone and truly get it! Need I say more?
BEYOND COOL DOING THIS PHENOMENAL BBC DOCUMENTARY!! My decades passionate devotion to this album was sky rocketed even higher the 1st time I watched!
Brother, you are the BEST reaction channel going!! 💥🎉👊🍻
Saw the dukes of September when they played Hawaii it was Donald Fagen , Michael. McDonald, Boz Scaggs I think a 7-8 piece backing band
With back up singers. Seeing them play these songs live was an experience I will never forget . Nothing but pure talent 🤘🤘😃
Roll Tide!! This was a really outstanding documentary. It was amazing to watch you react to these musical geniuses.
I'm absolutely enjoying this. Just like putting a puzzle together. Thank you!
There is a classic album series on Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon that is also excellent.
After listening to either of them you will never hear these albums in the same way.
This series hit the spot for me, so I knew it would for you! Thanks, Chod!
"That's when I was singing like Jerry Lewis remember that?" "Yeah that was a very fertile period for you...".
Larry Carlton is the best. Not only rhythm, his solos give goosebumps.
Steely Dan got their name from the a book...
One of my favorites of your videos too.
Interesting to hear what you say about the pocket
I dont know what part its on, but when they break down "Black Cow" Fagan starts singing ,
"Uptown Baby, Uptown Baby"
6:38 or so your talking about if Larry didn't think there was enough room in a track to lay something in there.
Larry Carlton is a consummate musician. He has enough skill to hear what needs to be there, and what doesn't. I doubt very much if anything he wrote in, wasn't recorded, I bet most everything he did stayed in the track. And he's not just a rhythm guitarist, he's an exceptional soloist as well. He did the solo on their song Kid Charlemagne (from their album The Royal Scam) which might be one of the best guitar solo's ever recorded.
A "pad" is just a base sound, underpinning the rest of the song. Its purpose is to make everything sound bigger, but unless you listen for all these things, it's easy to miss. Often a pad will be a couple of atmospheric chords. I guess its called a pad, because everything rests on it.
This is from the VH1 series Classic Albums. After this, I would do: Fleetwood Macs - Rumours
Deep Purple - Machine Head
Rush - 2112/Moving Pictures
Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon
Black Sabbath - Paranoid
Deacon Blues.
When are we getting part 4?
Are there are more parts coming?
A question...You're a drummer. I've heard another drummer observe that on Steely Dan tracks you'll hear the high hat in the right ear. Other recordings, the high hat is usually in the left ear. This was done because at concerts the listener hears the high hat on the right side of the drum set. Is this true? Is that a thing they did or is it common on other recording? Thanks for the channel and all the work you put into it.
Did you forget to upload parts 4 and 5?
Pad = melodic or chord sequence as a basic element in a song... "The keyboard played a pad underneath the singer during the verse"
Yeah, usually using a not too obtrusive sound, maybe strings.
Actually, the bit in 'Deacon Blues' wasn't really what I'd call a pad.........
@@gdj6298 Thank you for correcting Donald Fagen... He doesn't know what he's saying...
Here's the list and info on the Classic Albums series. You have a long way to go! Thanks Wikipedia! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Classic_Albums
😗👍✌
Unlike wrap they don't have to steal music from other artists
Deacon Blue, so they went to the West coast to make a song about life in NY burbs !
