The people of Ireland didn't support the uprising at first, when the British establishment started executing the leaders and ramdon people they lost their right to rule Ireland, the Easter upriser were brave people, but it was never black or white,if you can understand the whole history of Ireland up to the present day you are a lot better man than me
I used to go round singing t h is song when I was five knowing all about the background and back then I didn't know how much those men sacrificed but now I do and am proud to say they're all hero's to me and my country.
100 years ago to the very hour - the 1916 rebellion ended with the last surrender at Bolands Mills. April 29th, 18.03, 1916. This is a great version of this song and the lyrics always enter my head and touch my heart each time i walk down o connel street. I just hope Ireland really does rise up this time and stops voting for the same corrupt and divisive politicians that kept the general public away from the centenary events over the weekend. Maybe by the time we celebrate 100 years of the war for independence (2022) that we will have a proper government that has erased all cronyism, injustice and the terrible wealth divide that exists in our still divided land.
As an Irish person we are proud of our Palestinian brothers and sisters, u are supported here like nowhere else. The Arab countries should be ashamed of themselves.
James Connolly Last Statement, Dublin Castle, 9th May, 1916. Given to his daughter Nora Connolly on eve of his murder by the British To the Field General Court Martial, held at Dublin Castle, on May 9th, 1916: I do not wish to make any defence except against charges of wanton cruelty to prisoners. These trifling allegations that have been made, if they record facts that really happened deal only with the almost unavoidable incidents of a hurried uprising against long established authority, and nowhere show evidence of set purpose to wantonly injure unarmed persons. We went out to break the connection between this country and the British Empire, and to establish an Irish Republic. We believed that the call we then issued to the people of Ireland, was a nobler call, in a holier cause, than any call issued to them during this war, having any connection with the war. We succeeded in proving that Irishmen are ready to die endeavouring to win for Ireland those national rights which the British Government has been asking them to die to win for Belgium. As long as that remains the case, the cause of Irish freedom is safe. Believing that the British Government has no right in Ireland, never had any right in Ireland, and never can have any right in Ireland, the presence, in any one generation of Irishmen, of even a respectable minority, ready to die to affirm that truth, makes that Government for ever a usurpation and a crime against human progress. I personally thank God that I have lived to see the day when thousands of Irish men and boys, and hundreds of Irish women and girls, were ready to affirm that truth, and to attest it with their lives if need be. JAMES CONNOLLY, Commandant-General, Dublin Division, Army of the Irish Republic
Today 24th April…the 105th Anniversary of the Easter Rising!…All honour to the Irish Irish Republican Brotherhood Army, The Irish Volunteers, The Women of Cumann na mBan and the boys of Na Fianna Eireann. May their Names and Courage never be forgotten. And in Memory of Sean (Jack) Healy the youngest of the Easter Rising Martyr’s.
I remember an act by Syngen; a man who is on the run because he has (so he says) killed his father (because the father was violent etc.) comes to a village. He is celebrated for his heroic deed. But his father shortly comes around, very alive. Then the son actually tries to kill his father in front of the villagers; the villagers are horrified and they tie him and so forth. "There's a big difference between a good story and a dirty deed."
With boys and men far too young or old to fight and nothing but grandmothers and pre-teen girls, my ancestors barely escaped during this time...this video brought tears to my eyes and a pain of anger in my heart I will carry now with me all day...and forever. Such a pity people forget what happened...I know I won't, nor will my family.
i am half english half irish and i feel sickened at what the british did... thank god they got part of their land back, but they deserve it all back one day i hope...
Unfortunately that's not true, most Irish people can't even name the 16 executed after the Rising or tell you why they were executed. Take this song for example, it mentions "Men" many times but never does it mention the great "women" who fought in the Rising. That is shameful.
+christistratton The version of Foggy Dew is by a little known Spanish group called Banshee. The images are from Michael Collins and the Seachtar na Cásca series.

I'm English and I agree with most of the posts on here. We shouldn't have been there in the first place. The Provo's have done some atrocious things (much the same as the British army, RUC, UDA etc, before anyone starts) but it doesn't alter the fact that the British caused all this shit.
I'm english too, and share your sentiments. How many brits have irish ancestors in any case? My mother's grandmother was a Dublin midwife. The troubles broke my fuckin heart - especially the eruption of racism against irish people - and vice versa. Earlier, I'd been flat hunting in London in the early 60s, and saw some of the flats to let ads with "No Irish" on them.

I've been ridiculed as a kind of "plastic paddy" by other Americans. For some reason I always have had a passion for Ireland, its people and culture. Irish Independence has a solid place in my heart, though I never set foot in Ireland. Last year I researched a family line and found my 6th great-grandfather, Alexander. I'd never heard of him before, never even knew I had Irish blood for sure. Alexander came to the U.S. in the 17th century with a price on his head, put there by the English. Alexander and his brothers and nephews fought many battles for Ireland before they were forced to leave. What do you suppose? Do you think he's been with me prodding me on this whole time? Maybe.
I'm honestly surprised that the German Empire didn't offer weapons and supplies to the Irish rebellion as they were both fighting the British Empire at the same moment in history. "You don't attack us and we won't invade Ireland." would have been enough of a sales pitch.
They did. Joseph Mary Plunkett (one of the 7 leaders of the Rising), went to Berlin to negotiate for German military aid. He promised usage of Ireland's seaports for the German Navy for the duration of the war. In exchange, the Germans agreed to send an arsenal of 20,000 rifles, 4 million bullets, 10 machine guns, a crate full of grenades. Plus a volunteer expeditionary force of German soldiers to later arrive and fight alongside the Volunteers. Unfortunately, the ship carrying the much needed aid was intercepted by the British Navy.
The greatest way to defeat the British Empire is to ignore it . The free state should have set up a 32 county council. Nationalist mp's in the 6 counties could have been paid and reported to Dáil Eireann , but instead irish men and women in the 6 counties were abandoned . I think the Leinster and munster plantations were quite successful looking at the overall history and internal attitudes in Ireland
+Conor Hughes Conor, the rifles used by the British at that time were the Lee Enfield SMLE No. 1 Mk. III. The ones I saw here were No. 4 Mk 1 which were not used until 1941.
