i know this reply is late, but yes. If its optical zoom, then the image you take is at full resolution, not pre-zoomed and cropped. Still, the quality will depend on the distance of the shot and the sensor...cause light gets more distorted the further you go.
Pity that my one is now giving E62 10 error and the zoom is not focussing coirrectly!
