Peace and joy to you all.
今天要和各位講的兩足尊
Today I'm going to talk about
The Honored One Among Bipeds.
這兩足尊什麼意思
What does the Honored One
Among Bipeds mean?
我們在皈依三寶的時候
When we take refuge in the Triple Gem,
we recite:
皈依佛 兩足尊
Take refuge in the Buddha,
The Honored One Among Bipeds;
皈依法 離欲尊
Take refuge in the Dharma,
The Honored One Free of Desires;
皈依僧 眾中尊
Take refuge in the Sangha.
The Honored One Among All.
就皈依佛
We take refuge in the Buddha
佛在兩個腳當中是最尊的
who was the most honored one
among bipeds
就是人中最尊的
or men.
畜生有四條腿的
Animals either have four legs,
有八條腿的
eight legs,
有好多條有百腳都有腿的
up to a hundred legs,
或者沒有腿的
or even, no legs.
就是說鳥獸等
Birds and some other beasts
就是有兩條腿
have two legs.
牠也是爪甲不完全的
But their claws are incomplete
活動不自在
so they are not so agile.
只有人兩個腳
Men also have two legs
可以走動自如
but they are more agile -
能可以走遠
they can walk far,
能可以長跑
run far
能可以快跑
and fast.
兩個腳很有用
Their two legs are of great use to them.
所以路都是兩個腳走出來的
A road is made as you walk.
現在佛陀在兩個腳的人當中
Among bipeds, the Buddha
是最尊的、最貴的
was the most honored one.
這是一個意思
This is the meaning.
這一皈依佛 兩足尊
"Take refuge in the Buddha,
The Honored One Among Bipeds."
這個兩足就是表示福德和智慧
The bipeds represent blessings
and wisdom.
兩項具足
He had both of them.
這個世間上
In this world,
有人有福報沒有智慧
some people have blessings
but without wisdom.
他享受榮華富貴
He lives in luxury,
但是他沒有聰明沒有智慧
but he's not wise
不明理
and sensible.
這有福無智
He has blessings only
but not wisdom.
有的人有智慧沒有福報
Some people have wisdom
but not blessings.
他很聰明智慧
He's very smart,
說學者、教授
maybe because he's a scholar or professor.
但是他常常什麼事情
But oftentimes,
好事都輪不到他
luck is not coming his way,
他因為沒有福德因緣
because he lacks the cause
and condition of rewards.
所以很多人
Many people,
明明比方在我們
like those in our
修道的團體當中
Sangha,
他就沒有福報
have no blessings.
就等於天人天福享盡了
This is like when a deva
has used up his blessings,
五衰相現
he will show the five looks of debility
他也會墮入到凡間來
and fall into the mundane world.
現在佛陀
The Buddha on the other hand
不但是有福報
was a man of blessings.
他有三十二相八十種好
He had 32 principal marks
and 80 minor marks,
那是他都是修福報
which came from his
cultivation of blessings,
苦行
ascetic practice,
為人服務、跟人結緣
provision of service to others,
creation of affinities with others.
積功德 修福
One should cultivate not only blessings,
還要修智慧
but also wisdom.
所以福慧雙修
This is dual cultivation
of blessings and wisdom.
修智慧就是你要修明理
To cultivate wisdom is to
cultivate a rational mind.
你要誦經
When you recite a sutra,
要可以要開悟
you want to become awakened
要通達
with unimpeded understanding.
所謂一理通 萬理徹
If you understand a principle thoroughly,
so do you to other ten thousand principles.
如果在這個世間上
If a man in the world
又有福報又有智慧
has both blessings and wisdom,
所以福慧具全
or has dual possession
of blessings and wisdom,
這是一個人生最美滿的事情
this is supposed to be
the most wonderful thing in his life.
所以在修行的當中
In our cultivation,
你光是布施
even we merely practice giving,
布施有福報
we still have blessings.
但是你也要去
But that's not enough.
You also have
對佛學、佛法你也要通達
to understand the Buddhist
Dharma thoroughly.
有的人光是去研究佛學
Some people simply study
Buddhist studies.
他一點服務的菩提心都沒有
They don't have any Bodhi mind to serve
不發心利人
and help others.
那也不好
This is not only not good
都有缺陷
but is also faulty.
所以大家
So dear audience,
要真正的學佛做大菩薩
we should learn to become
a great bodhisattva,
要像佛一樣兩足尊
or the Buddha,
the Honored One Among Bipeds
福慧具足
who had dual possession
of blessings and wisdom.
